URA Recommendation: Vote AGAINST "Liberate New Western Atlantic"

URA World Assembly Recommendation

Liberate New Western Atlantic
The Security Council,

Noting the founderless, passworded state of the region New Western Atlantic (NWA);

Understanding that striking down this password will allow the region to be brought under the control of the inter-regional community;

Abhorred that the NWA, in lieu of traditional methods of recruitment, absorbed and integrated communities of other regions, such as that of Norden whose unique community was destroyed after merging into the NWA;

Disgusted by the NWA’s association with a myriad of questionable and undesirable regions;

Disappointed by the NWA’s unapologetic tolerance of problematic nations and dangerous content such as fascism and anti-semitism;

Horrified by the actions of the NWA's most prominent nations who weaponised and non-consensually distributed the sensitive private information of the leaders of other nations;

Alarmed by the clemency given by the NWA to nations who distributed the aforementioned information;

Knowing the NWA’s community relocated to the New Western Empire for security purposes when its founder ceased to exist, though has failed to adequately self-improve to provide a safe and inclusive region for its nations;

Seeking to set an example of the consequences of the NWA’s actions in hopes of preventing other regions from making the same mistakes;

Hereby liberates New Western Atlantic.

This Security Council resolution was written by Andusre to liberate New Western Atlantic. You can find the forum thread here.

The United Regions Alliance recommends that you vote AGAINST the resolution

This resolution liberates New Western Atlantic, which would remove its password and allow it to be taken over "by the international community." Because references to OOC events should be minimized in GA resolutions, this Liberation contains vague references to NWA's association with "questionable and undesirable regions," tolerance of fascism and antisemitism, and release of other players' private information. Undoubtedly, these actions are abhorrent and inexcusable, and nations in NWA have caused great harm to others. While the Alliance recognizes the past injustices committed by the NWA, we do not see the impact that a liberation will have in the present day. As the region's population has fled to New Western Empire and many of the most detestable nations are no longer active, this liberation does nothing to combat or reverse NWA's toxicity.

URA Founder Ellenburg wrote,

Ellenburg wrote:I don't see the point in liberating the region. Normally liberations are to liberate natives who are in need I see no point. Other than for raiders to have fun with them. I just feel personally its not how they should be used. I totally see the point as to why this has come to vote and the purpose behind it. I'm just not totally on board with using the Liberation being used this way, won't it set a bad precedent in the SC?

To which The West Pacific resident Varanius replied,

Varanius wrote:Such a precedent already exists. Things that are fascist (or even just unlikable) have been liberated offensively.

URA President Altino wrote,

Altino wrote:The point is so that it will become raidable so that the trophy can be destroyed and NWE will no longer own their home region. Because they deserve it. Remember when they committed an OOC offense in the middle of the NST server?

Conch Kingdom voting member Duby wrote,

Duby wrote:This liberation seems less of helping natives, which I believe is the purpose liberations serve? If it's to just take away their region, independent military organizations can do that.

If it wasn't a dead region, I'd understand more.

You should see me in a crown wrote:Full support. Really confused on the against votes. It's a super standard practice that is how we keep problematic regions in check. Think CCD. No matter if they move or not we still get to send the message that we are not willing to coexist with those kind of things. Trophy hunting is [a valid argument] but like I said, it's the message it sends. You will get raided to high heaven if you decided to do bad ooc things like I said.

Augustin Alliance founder August wrote,

August wrote:NWA absolutely hated my guts while they were around--and maybe the whole AA too, but mostly me on an individual level. Never quite figured out why. Anyway, if someone (other than the founders of the regions that merged with them) were to be in favor of this, it would probably be me. I have no love for that group of people, and I was thrilled when the region died and its worst members left the game.

However, I am opposed, and the reason is simple. (No, it is not because this is an improper use of Liberations. Some AA officials may feel that way, and that is fine, but I do not.) The region has been locked and shuttered for a solid two years now, so the nasty community is (present tense) not there--it is long gone. There is no message. Everyone knows what they did is bad. On a practical level, this accomplishes nothing, and on an idealistic level, it tells people nothing they do not already know. My reason, then? In the absence of a solid reason to vote in favor, I am opposed due to the author, who in my opinion is objectionable.

To which Altino responded,

Altino wrote:I'm not exactly bffs with [the author] either, but that is not justification in my book. The NWA community is very much present and very much still alive. They like to occasionally make apologetic outreaches to their former victims because they think that if they say sorry with a really guilty looking face then we will all forget everything. Making sure that people don't forget and making sure that they know it isn't forgotten is exactly the point of this kind of thing.

After what they did to other players completely unapologetically, the company they keep, and just generally how objectionable their community is, even if you feel that this kind of lib is unorthodox, I don't think unorthodox measures are out of line. They should never be allowed to rest easy, regardless of which vowels they have replaced at the end of their acronym.

Lands End voting member TESDAI wrote,

TESDAI wrote:My agreement is with August on this one. I don't know the author very well, so that doesn't come into my opinion much, but the fact that the region has been closed for years and the community is gone is kinda just pointless for this to even be a proposal in the first place imo. I don't really see a point in liberating the dead region just so it can get raided. The community has already moved to NWE, so it's not like we're doing anything other than trophy hunting here.

Boston Harbor wrote:We don't mean to start a fight. This is just something that we feel strongly about. Karma is built on the principle that for good or for ill, you get what's coming to you. When our friends are wronged, we stand up for them, because that isn't what they deserve. When people do messed up things, we are not afraid to push at them and never let up, because that is what they deserve. For us standing up against this and being persistent about it is the obvious thing to do. Indusse didn't even know about NWA's history, but now he does and has closed embassies because rather than being passive, we stepped out and said something. It's unfathomable to I think most of us to think that the people we trust would just sit back and let very serious things be forgotten. The only way we can protect ourselves from repeating the same mistakes is to remember them and the only way we can protect others from those mistakes is by making sure this danger is marked. That's all this lib would do.
