"I'd like that, and in the morning I can explain myself, preferably to someone in charge. You all have a right to know what's coming after you..." he trailed off, in a queer mix of exhaustion and foreboding. His armor had a few dents and scrapes from holding off the infected and a few chance collisions with trees and rocks, but was mostly intact, if a bit dusty. His undersuit was slick, and caked with the ever-present dust of his surroundings, and despite his healthy pallor, the fear in his eyes was still present, like a stifled flame biding its time behind lumber, waiting to rise up in force.
As they headed onwards, Gervash took a look at his new guide with some curiosity, or at least an excuse to take his mind off his former employers.
"Sam, I'm sorry to say this, but I don't have any local currency to pay you. I've got my gear, but not much. I could work, but I'm not sure there'll be time for that before they come."

"Don't worry about that now boy", he'd say responding to both things he said.
Many people looked from outside their windows or from their yards, some drinking beer or just staring awestruck at the outsider.

They'd take a turn into a residential neighborhood and came to a house with a white picketed fence, perfect green grass behind it. Sam hellped Gervash inside and gestured to a room at an end of a hall.
"Thats my boys room... he uh.. he won't be needing it. You can find clothes in the dressers and the shower is across the hall. I'll make some food if you want some but by all means go to bed if you want.. God knows you need it", Sad said as he took off his cap, revealing his balding head.
