As a member of the LGBTQ+ community I have seen what the "gay panic defense" implies. Trans people are most at risk when the gay panic defense is utilized by defense attorneys to justify a homicide. It boils down to this; is it alright to strangle a victim because they concealed their physiological traits? Is it a justification of violence that, when this physiology was revealed during the act of coitus, pardons a passionate murderer?

The gay panic defense has caused unfairness in the judicial system by saying, "yes, it was wrong to kill this person, but, it was a passionate response to the victim's initial actions of concealment of their orientation or gender identity therefore it is not entirely the defendant's fault for murdering or harming the victim."

I urge you to vote to protect the LGBTQ+ community. There isn't a justification for murder when a defendant is panicked after the revelation of a victim's orientation or gender identity.

Being LGBTQ+ should not mean less protection from violence stemed from hate.
