Chan island

Happy Refounding Day Forest!

I had a lot on my mind when I joined Forest 5 years ago. The region had just recently been tag-raided, after having had one of the longest delegate streaks on the site, and I was curious as to how people would react to this toppling. It intrigued me, with its simple name, longform RMB and focus on the environment. It struck me as a place with a lot of potential- at the time in my mind, a threat, as this was in the twilight days of my raider activities.

Boy am I glad I plopped my Chan Island account here.

5 years later the place is thriving. It's the centre of issue writing, a powerful influencer on the international stage and it has swelled in size. The region is a haven of NS excellence, with a much higher proportion of commended nations than most other large regions. With me at the helm, no less! It is an incredible honour to be the Forest Keeper of this region on such an important anniversary as this one, and may I prove worthy of that accolade.

My excellent Lore Minister Middle Barael's announcement on the long in the making Union of Forest RP should hopefully help with that particular quibble. Any applications for the ongoing cartographer recruitment drive filed on this day won't get special consideration, but certainly a smile from me at the very least. Also in the works is the even longer awaited security review (dispatch is in the drafting stage) which will ensure that Forest can remain strong enough to celebrate for another 14 years worth of June 8ths!

So happy refounding day. And happy pride month. And thank you, truly.

.... May or may not do an undead necromancer version of this post at a later date.

Gorthias wrote:Got a huge question. This region does have a rp section to it does it not? If so where can i find it?

You ask this on the right day! Today we are launching the Union of Forest, a dedicated regional RP (and more) for all members to join in. Check out Middle Barael's RMB post from earlier today to find out more.

Middle Barael wrote:Official Super-Important Lore Ministry Post

Today, on the anniversary of Forest's refounding 14 years ago, the Lore Ministry and the Government of Forest are pleased to announce a new venture in the in-character dynamics of the region of Forest, the Union of Forest.

Finally on a few of the other subjects;

Books!

Just today I tried out, funnily enough, an online book reading club. The idea was that it was like a normal club where everyone comes together and reads their thing. But on the internet, because of the whole disease thing outside. Probably not my cup of tea, but still allowed me to make a lot of progress on the book I got on a whim yesterday; The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, but Rachel Joyce.

Personally I am a very, very eclectic reader, ploughing through multiple fiction and nonfiction books a month. For some reason I disproportionately read books on psychology even though this interest does not manifest, well, anywhere else in my life. Meanwhile, fantasy and science fiction books get blitzed through so fast that their covers don't even crease up much.

On a more vulnerable note, I very much hope to start adding books to the body of existent literature soon. In 2020 I finally completed the first draft of an enormous science fiction novel, which took me 9 years to write. Even got a professional editor to read through it, and she said it was good! Except for all of the problems that need to be sorted out in the second draft I'm working on. It's long been a dream of mine to see my name in a bookshop, and aspire to be granted that one within the next year or 2.

Official Post from the Ministry of Culture

Hi everyone! Happy Refounding Day! I don't consider myself to be very good at speaking from the heart, so I hope a couple of announcements from the Ministry of Culture will satisfy you instead.

First of all, I've been working on projects with both The most serene republicans and Palos heights. In MSR's earlier post they mentioned the Tree of Knowledge; for those who don't know, this is a regional library and book club launched by Areulder where nations can share their favourite works of fiction or non-fiction. I'm pleased to announce that MSR and I are working together to revive this initiative with MSR at the helm. I'm also collaborating with Palos to bring about the return of the popular Official Forest Recipe List, a project that aims to foster kinship between regionmates through the sharing of delicious foods. Keep an eye out for the launch of both of these in the future!

I'd also like to take a minute to appreciate our beautiful Refounding Day flag, designed by our Flag Contest winner Mount Seymour. It's the first of many flag variants the regional government plans to have them make in the future, so we all have that to look forward to.

Finally, I'd like to announce the launch of Forest's new-look environmental agenda, inspired by Turbeaux's work as Conscience of Forest. The Voice of Forest is a monthly bulletin that covers the life and work of a notable environmental activist. With this project, I aim to inspire you folks and nations across the NSverse to get involved with environmentalism in a way that is personal to them, as well as to celebrate those Atlantean figures who laid the groundwork of the environmental movement we champion today. It's not something that's meant to be prescriptive; I won't tell you what is important about each activist, but instead hope each reader will come away with their own perspective on the individual and the issues discussed. So, without further ado, I've published the first issue of the Voice of Forest, entitled "The First Lady of Flowers". It focuses on the efforts of Lady Bird Johnson to beautify urban areas in the US and conserve native flora for the enjoyment of people across the country.

Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Johnson (1912-2007) was an American socialite and First Lady of the United States of America from 1963 to 1969. She was also a successful investor, becoming a millionaire in her own right before her husband, Lyndon Baines Johnson, was elected to office. A pioneer First Lady, Lady Bird was the first to interact directly with Congress, employ her own press secretary and campaign independently from her husband. She is also well known for both her civil rights activism and advocacy for beautifying America’s urban centres and highways.

Background

Claudia Alta was born in east Texas in 1912 to Thomas Jefferson Taylor and Minnie Lee Pattillo, although she was raised by her aunt Effie Pattillo after her mother's death in 1918. When she was a baby, her nursemaid decided she was as "pretty as a lady bird", and the nickname stuck. In 1930, after a brief stint at a women's Episcopal college in Dallas, Lady Bird decided to apply to the University of Texas. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history with honours in 1933 and a bachelor's degree in journalism with distinction in 1934.

A friend in Austin introduced Lady Bird to Lyndon Baines Johnson, then a 26-year-old Congressional aide, who proposed after their first date. She did not want to rush into marriage, but thanks to his persistence she accepted his proposal ten weeks later. It was Lady Bird's inheritance that funded the launch of her husband's campaign to become a Congressman; when he enlisted in the navy at the start of the Second World War, Lady Bird ran his congressional office. During the war, Lady Bird spent $17,500 of her inheritance to buy a small local radio station in Austin and later expanded to buying a television station in 1952 (in spite of her husband's objections). Lady Bird managed both of those enterprises and in doing so she became a self-made millionaire.

As Second Lady of the United States of America, she acted as a substitute for the First Lady, Jaqueline Kennedy, at a number of events which she would later say prepared her well for her time as First Lady. That time arrived sooner than Lady Bird could ever have expected - after the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963 she found herself looking on as her husband was sworn in as President on Air Force One. During her time in the office of First Lady, Lady Bird employed her own press secretary and chief of staff (being the first First Lady to do so). In 1964, she defied death threats during a 1,682-mile tour of the Deep South aboard a chartered train, the Lady Bird Special, to speak directly to those who opposed her husband's recent passage of the Civil Rights Act. In doing so, she became the first President's spouse to campaign independently of her husband; as a native Texan, she later said she had thought it important that someone speak to Southern voters with respect while trying to change as many minds as possible about the necessity of desegregation and the importance of ending racial discrimination.

After the death of her husband in 1973, Lady Bird continued working on a number of personal projects and managing her investments. She spoke out for women's rights at the 1977 National Women's Conference alongside notable activists Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem, and her environmental activism continued into her later years. Lady Bird died in 2007 at the age of 94 and was buried next to her husband at the Johnson family cemetery in Stonewall, Texas.

Activism

At a time when environmentalism was beginning to enter the American consciousness, Lady Bird was the driving force behind the first administration to concern itself with environmental issues. A staunch nature-lover, she is undoubtedly best remembered for her efforts to beautify America's cities

Lady Bird Johnson watching over her husband, President Lyndon
Baines Johnson, as he signs the Highway Beautification Act into
law (1965).
and highways with the ultimate goal of teaching a nation to treasure and preserve the natural world. As First Lady, she supervised the cleaning of monuments and the planting of flowers in the US capital in an attempt to draw tourists and improve the lives of residents. Her efforts to protect wildflowers and plant millions of them along America's highways inspired many similar programmes across the country.

Lady Bird was also the driving force behind the 1965 Highway Beautification Act, a piece of legislation that aimed to replace highway billboards and junkyards with trees and wildflowers - so much so that the legislation was nicknamed "Lady Bird's Bill". As the first First Lady to lobby congress for the passage of a bill, she gained a reputation as a trailblazer who strongly believed that clean streets and a beautiful environment would make the US a better place to live. The Act brought nature back into the daily lives of millions of citizens, and Lady Bird's campaigning brought the subject of conservation to the public sphere.

Even after her time in the office of First Lady came to a close, Lady Bird continued to campaign for several beautification projects, including Town Lake in Austin (which would later be renamed in her honour), and served on the advisory board of the National Park Service. Together with actress Helen Hayes, she founded the National Wildflower Research Center near Austin, Texas, in 1982 which would later be renamed the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Today, the wildflower centre is still dedicated to the preservation and use of native plants through research and education. It is often seen as an embodiment of Lady Bird's vision to protect and preserve the natural beauty of the US, both taking care of nature and communities while integrating the two. After founding the centre, Lady Bird would go on to write: "I'm optimistic that the world of native plants will not only survive, but will thrive for environmental and economic reasons, and for reasons of the heart."

If you can make time to have a read, I'd really appreciate it. If you want to discuss what you've read, even better. I also invite our ambassadors to share this dispatch with our embassy regions - you may want to include a short explanation of the project or even stimulate some environmental discussion of your own on their RMB based on the themes of the dispatch.

Voice of Forest? So you’re the Lorax? The one who speaks for the trees? Do they tell me to shut up?

Oh hey, Voice of Forest. That seems very familiar...

I like it. It's a good way to spread an environmental message, and I really, really, like that it's grounded in the real world. As great as RP and fiction is, it's important to remember how important this stuff really is, and that there are people to look up to in the real world. Great work Terrabod and Turbeaux. Hopefully this will last longer than the previous VoF dispatches...

Edit: I'll just post about this here. No sense in double-posting and getting yelled at.

Happy Refounding Day! I've been mildly annoying people with my flag for the better part of four years now, and I've really enjoyed my time debating random nonsense, liking way too many posts, and absolutely crushing in events, and the community here has really been fantastic the whole time I've been around. Even though I've become less active in posting and liking, I still spend far too much time reading posts on here, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Happy refounding day, y'all! Honestly never been super into the GP part of NS, always was more into RP, but I decided to check out the other side a few months ago and I picked a pretty good place to start :)

I've been searching the forums for information about what NS issues' countries are analogue of IRL and found some threads, the most helpful of which was created and supported by Jutsa. That's a huge job done with listing all of those NPC nations, thanks. My guess about Daguo, East Lebatuck, Skandilund, United Federation, Albionia, Althaniq (here I assumed not as precise as Qatar but rather just Arab), and Brancaland were practically the same as you describe. However, I am still curious if Bigtopia, Lilliputia, Tasmania, Blackacre, and Marche Noir are a rip off of a real world countries too.

I must confess I haven't read the entire thread yet since it requires more time and dedication than I have right now, but the first pages of it are impressive.

My first three dispatches posted as a Forester, besides some basic factbooks, were a set of three recipes for a previous Forest collection :-D I've still got 'em up:

Red Sauce (30 minutes prep, serves 6-8)

Ingredients
1-2 Tbsp Olive Oil
1 large clove Garlic
1 can Tomato Soup (10.75oz)
1 can Tomato Sauce (15oz)
1 can Tomato Paste (6oz)
Oregano
Black Pepper
Worcestershire Sauce
1 Tbsp Sugar
Grated Parmesan

Optional: 6oz red wine
Optional: Pre-cooked ground meat, meatballs, or sausage
Optional: Stewed tomatoes, mushrooms, basil, other cooked veggies

Directions
1. In a medium saucepan, chop up the clove of garlic and simmer it in a small amount of olive oil (just enough to cover bottom of pan)
2. Add Tomato Soup, Sauce, and Paste
3. Fill Soup and Paste cans with water and add (Optional: use red wine in the paste can instead of water)
4. Stir until smooth, and bring to a boil
5. Stir in oregano and ground black pepper to taste
6. Stir in a couple dashes of Worcestershire sauce
7. Add 1 tablespoon of white sugar, and stir
8. Add some grated parmesan (equal to around 1-2 tablespoons worth) and stir in
9. Optional: Add any optional meats or veggies that are desired
10. Turn heat down low, cover, and simmer for at least 15 minutes
11. Sauce will reduce while simmering – stir occasionally. When it’s the consistency you like, remove from heat and serve.

- Excess will refrigerate in a sealed container for at least 2 weeks, or it can be frozen long term.

That particular red sauce is the first recipe I ever learned as a kid. I would beg my parents to make spaghetti or other pasta dishes for dinner on a regular basis, and so by the time I was around 9 years old, my mother taught me to make the sauce so that I could help with the dinner I wanted. The base version without the optional add-ins is relatively thin, like a pizza sauce, but it thickens up with the addition of meats, veggies, or reduction on the stove-top. Definitely the recipe I've been asked for the most over the years!

PROUD MESSAGE CONTEST

Some of the guest nations sent us their message to the international LGBTQ+ community. On the last day of the event Einset Equality Committee (EEC) will announce the best message this year which will feature the PRIDE 2021. We've already got information from our agents that EEC loved all of the entries and experiencing hard time to pick one. At first we planned to publish only the one which wins the contest, however, we have changed the rules. So, here we provide all six registered entries competing this year.

Don't ever feel like your are different, we are all humans and will always love you!

Your gender is real, it matters. Even you suffered years and years of discrimination, it is gone. Happy Pride Month.
Inkwell Hell

On behalf of Einswenn we thank you for your participation.
Your support is important and you never know for real how many people you can help by showing it.

Every single entry submitted by you creates whole threads of thoughts and discussions both on NS and IRL, reminds about things that really matter. By speaking out, by simply joining this event you contributed to the better future, even if you don't really think so right now.

The reports, statistics, and outcomes will be ready after the event ends. Some of the received information will be shared in this factbook. PRIDE 2021 team will notify participants again once we update our event page.

ABOUT THE EVENT

Starting as a small themed event in a night club called Somah, it has first evolved into nationwide celebration and then went international, welcoming other nations to take part in the fest. In 2020 the rainbow party flooded the streets and clubs of Hover, and this year PRIDE returns to the capital city. Keepenhest invited other nations to join the fun. During the event there are many club parties, street activities, restaurant specials, and many more various entertainment options planned for attending guests. All public transport is free during the event. In this dispatch we highlight only the three major parts of the PRIDE: Movies, Lectures, and Music Night.

As registration closed today I have updated the factbook sharing all the submitted entries for the event: movies, lectures, and songs. As a person of quite developed imagination, I loved every creative idea. Sometimes even the simplest words can spark chains of images and situations in one's mind. So, some of them gave me a lot of things to think about in my spare time. // The report about this event will be released after it ends.

Just some guesses (these are based on an American perspective, since that's what's typically implied):

Bigtopia - Mexico. Obvious immigrant crisis, is a poorer nation that your nation outsources some to, physically borders you with a river border (on which they are downstream from you)
Blackacre - Russia. Chilly relations, intense spying (to the point of assassination attempts)
Lilliputia - Israel. Invading other countries to get back their homeland, currently kicking people out of their western province (Gullivad, which is Palestine)
Tasmania - Tasmania is literally a real-world place, but I don't think it's supposed to be Tasmania. It's just a vague desert tribal nation. Could be Middle Eastern, Australian, or southern/eastern Africa. It has a few things that point to the Middle East (maybe Iraq or Pakistan), such as sheltering a terrorist and receiving drone strikes.
Marche Noir - Syria. Just finished a civil war that caused immigration crisis and ended in authoritarianism, exports rice, is near Althaniq

Frankly, astronomy part is the most unexpected among the entries. But am pretty sure it'll be hit :P As for the virtual people, I'm really envious for having all those NS events (the cool ones, not the violent uprising in Middle Barael, for example).

That's a nice guess (especially with Israel). Although I didn't think of Blackacre as of Russia yet, need to get through it again.

On an unrelated note: Did you get my map request telegram? I saw you posting earlier that your inbox is full so my tg could have been also missed. I don't know if this is an appropriate time for being added to the map (during the cartographer contest).

Ahhhh. Alright, well looks like my mental state has taken another hit. Argh, I was doing so good. It's considerably worse than previously, so I'm taking another break from NS. Did someone call me? :eyes: <- Overused discord meme.

But in all seriousness: I actually am (I believe) the third keeper. The list was originally created by some long-CTE'd fellow named Omsarim, but that nation CTE'd so a new thread was created by Noahs Second Country. Then that nation CTE'd and I made my own thread. Then, of course, Noah came back. That was almost an awkward situation that was thankfully avoided!

That said, the list of religions/cults was in fact created by yours truly, and in typical me fashion, neither of which have been updated in a little while. (Give or take, about 50 issues as a rough guess.) There's also this wonderful little list created by Westinor. :)

Incidentally, all of these lists are kept on a nice little index post here at the end of the Got Issues? FAQ thread pinned at the top of the Got Issues? forum and maintained by Candlewhisper Archive. In case anyone's interested. #totallynothelpingadvertizeissuewritingbypreachingtothechoir

Hey, the protests in Middle Barael have been mostly peaceful. Baraelim are known for being ardent pacifists, and Middle Barael is in the top 1% of safest nations to raise a child in. If I do remember correctly, the only nation so far to have violence associated with the Occupy Forest protests is Einswenn. Very interesting /s

I must confess I haven't read the entire thread yet since it requires more time and dedication than I have right now, but the first pages of it are impressive.

Yeah, I love that guide. I feel like the UK is most certainly the UK, given that the name “Albion” is an archaic name for Great Britain. Also, I think Ausonia is likely meant to be Austria, given that it is a small neighboring country that you may try to take over for the purposes of Lebensraum, and also because their name sounds similar to Austria. And while the guide seems to present that Nova Syrupa is its own nation, I think it could also simply be an analogue for Nova Scotia and therefore a province of Brancaland, which makes sense given the Brancalandians’ love of syrup.

Gonna add a bot reminder to make me update their entries with these relevant suggestions.

For what it's worth, I believe Bigtopia is more along the lines of some kind of African nation, while South Nobovidia (something like that) is Mexico - I think.

Maxtopia's most likely something like Egypt (gotta add that too)
East Lebatuck's 100% the USSR (and Russia to an extent)
Ausblic's Australia (kinda named after Aussie [Australian rePublic] because of the fruit baskets issue)
Althaniq's prooobably Saudi Arabia, though it could be something like Qatar or something.
Qonpaluuk's 100% Iceland
Skandilund is all of Scandinavia [save for Denmark apparently?]
Prudenlund, I believe, is Denmark (interesting that the issue about a war between you and Skandilund was actually a Danish territory but I digress)
Albionia's definitely the UK, yeah.
Merovingia's probably Belgium.
Galliennes (or something) is France
Savoiia's Italy
Aldoustan I tried making into some future-dystopian Kazakhstan but atm it only is most likely this.
Blackacre is honestly kinda like dystopian USA or something (Heck Valeria Drake did twitter things).
The United Federation is... kind of obvious, although this is more steriotypical confederate bible-belt semi-old-timey super-capitalist USA.
San Vitenzo's Cuba. No questions there.
Brancaland's Canada.
Gallopavia is a hybrid of the Netherlands and Turkey, I believe.
Brasilistan, similarly, is a hybrid of... well, Brazil and some Turkic nation, or something.
Daguo's China (Little Daguo being Taiwan)
Sakura's Japan
Nui Va Song's Vietnam
North/South Palisade... not sure? Kinda generic, though they're pooosibly North/South Korea or something but it's kinda meh at best.
East and West Calypso are probably typical tropical getaways like the Bahamas or Bermuda or something
Moltovea I believe is basically Moldova? I think? Interesting nation to have a specific NS representation, but yes.
Macronesia's Indonesia.
I admit I'm not really sure about Marche Noir/Blanche tbh. Same with Lilliputia/Gullivad, tbh, and Tasmania's not Australia because of Ausblic, but rather is probably the result of Max Barry trying to make fun of Tasmania by depicting it as some kind of hellhole.
Kawandaland's an African nation (Maybe Rwanda?) that has a really funny name.
Haptu's... I wanna say Haiti, but either way it's based on being a proxy war country.
Manamana might be Panama? I admit I don't know if Panama's a tax haven though and Manamana definitely is so this might actually be more like the Bahamas in that respect.
Moltevino's Mediterranian... honestly might be Greece or southern Italy, not really sure.
Sacerdia's some kind of religious nation that miiight be based off of Israel? Kinda hard to tell though.
Smalltopia, interestingly enough, has generally been considered Germany (Very different from Bigtopia).
Some nations, like Zompaboodaland, Wezeltonia, and West Ferodiah, are ultimately unique, I believe. Despoujanbourg Republic feels reminiscent of irl but I can't put my finger on it, and Copiluaca was named after this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVJqwCdzZnw
I also thought we might've had a nation reminiscent of either Pakistan or India, but I can't really recall either of them existing in the issue base so I can't be certain.

Althaniq I thought was pretty much confirmed to be Qatar, given that a) they are facing a large embargo/boycott movement, b) their name comes from the House of al-Thani, which rules Qatar, and c) they have a large airline.

And Qonpaluuk could also be Greenland or Nunavut, as the name sounds much more Greenlandic/Inuit than it does Nordic.

Sacerdia does not seem like Israel since Israel does not execute non-Jews, it's not really theocratic (it has a state religion, but so does Greece, and it does have a large orthodox community who supported Netanyahu and therefore have large influence)

Savoiia could be Italy, or a larger Vatican, or even Savoy.

Merovingia is likely Belgium, though it could be northeast France too

Einswenn wrote:That’s clearly fake news. We in Einswenn are pretty sure you don’t tell Forest entire truth about what’s going on in your nation.

Haha yeah no.

Take it from the writings of Iris Dubois, MBBC's journalist who has recently become quite famous as a result of her informative and right-off-the-press articles about the protests and her friendship with activist Shira Meron. On Saturday Dubois posted on the interregional social media site RMB:
Despite attempts by some hooligans and foreign nationals to disrupt the ongoing economic reckoning in Middle Barael or paint a picture of chaos, the protests have remained largely peaceful. Light fighting broke out at a protest in Minerva earlier this week due to a Minerva PD raid on Chan Islander drug traffickers and gun smugglers, but within a few minutes it was contained as protest organizers learnt that the police were not in fact targeting the activists. Minor skirmishes also broke out following heated arguments in Sacrovilla and Nava, but nobody was badly injured and these skirmishes were quickly stopped, and in Cothon City a few were lightly bruised following a mini-stampede in the streets of Medina neighborhood. But other than these few isolated incidents, the protests have kept with the Baraelan core value of pacifism, and indeed the only fighting so far recorded to have taken place in relation to the Occupy Forest movement is the rioting in Einswenn, to which of course we wish peace and unity. However, attempts to spread chaos and paint a picture of an unravelling MB will not be tolerated by anyone in our Most Serene Eco-Republic, and we all urge for calm and unity

This message has since then be "quoted" by many across the political tesseract, including by King Solomon, Chloe Arborn, PM Marc Nuya, Shira Meron, Dr. Nathaniel Manza, and Bill Fremont.
