TODAY IN THE WEST

It's Booknesday and I'm eager to know what TWPers have been reading recently!

Speaking of reading, you should take a look at the May 2024 edition of The Western Post if you haven't yet, and upvote it to show your appreciation for our staff's work!

Today's Midweek Mocktail recipe is also out, featuring not only the mocktail, but also the original recipe for those who prefer it.

Last but not least, don't forget to endorse Overthinkers and the Guardians!

I’ve just spent hours I’ll never get back in the Swedish prison known as IKEA. Aaagh! We spent an hour or more trying to organise delivery for stuff that was currently out of stock and one piece that was in stock but I thought wouldn’t fit in the car.

People kept telling us that we wouldn’t have to pay double delivery but we did. Well, no we didn’t cos I said “Sod it, this piece will fit in the car”.

It did, just about. :)

I don’t need a mocktail, I need a very large beer!

Actually, this Booknesday I'm looking for advice. Any recommendations on where to start in Discworld? I really want to get into it but prior attempts have not gone well.

Hard one - the books do follow a timeline of sorts. Characters encountered in the early volumes have aged in later ones. The first books e.g. “The Colour of Magic” are more of a spoof on fantasy novels - the later books are deeper, more philosophical but still a hoot.

I think the first one I read was “Wyrd Sisters” which was the sixth book and my introduction to the inestimable Granny Weatherwax. It’s also a bit of a mick-take of the Scottish play.

I went back and read the earlier ones after that and continued to read them until the last one, “The Shepherd’s Crown”.

Me and Laudesia have also decided to put future monthly contests on hold, and will discuss more about our plans for their return when cards are back and we get to know the result of the recovery effort.

Important Update: Cards are now back to roughly what they were before the crash thanks to the admins' hard work! There's a few issues to fix, so you can view your cards but the market is disabled for a few more days according to them.

For the TWP Card Club, this means that contests will be returning in June according to what me and Laud have decided! There'll be some time for people to return to farming and get used to cards again, but we will be having our yearly Pride-themed contest for next month!

I’m having that beer!

Good news about cards, excellent work done by the Admins.

So at IKEA we bought some bookcases. Once they’ve arrived and are assembled I can get my books out of the boxes they’ve been in for almost a year.

Yay!

I recently did a bookshelf refresh myself, swapping some books with others in boxes.

I'm on page 539 of 627 of the book I'm currently reading. The author started drifting after the first third of the book, and then lost his way as he continued onward into the weeds of random thoughts two-thirds in. At this point in the book, it reads rushed and somewhat unedited. He keeps repeating himself.

Of course, some of the rushed impression may just be my anxiousness to finish it and move on. *chuckles*

I don’t normally do Booknesday. But I need to rant about World War Z.

I just finished this book, and I wish more books were like this. I find the whole interview format unique and an interesting way to tell a story. You get perspectives from different countries, cultures, and personalities. Plus, the way some of these interviews end on cliffhangers keeps me engaged through the whole thing. Keep it up Max Brooks.

Hi, welcome to the West Pacific. As a new nation you might like to read our New Player’s Guide - it will help you get started in the game.

You like jazz?

The last one I finished was The Thursday Murder Club, which is a lovely little mystery somewhere in the vein of a Miss Marple. I got it in a book swap at work and ended up thoroughly enjoying it—I'll probably pick up the sequels from the library later this year.

You still didnt answer my question :P

You did not specify the jazz genre. There's jazz, and jazzz, then there's Jazz.

Soft Jazz? Jazz Fusion? Swing Jazz, New Orleans Jazz, or perhaps Jazz Improv? (Though there are some that like to claim that all Jazz is improv.)

Of course, Jazz Fusion will lead you into Progressive Fusion, that that'll bring you right into Progressive Rock. Just start with Al Di Meola, Stanley Clark and Chic Correa from the band Return to Forever. Al Di Meola is currently on solo tour. (RIP Chic.)

The late Alan Holdsworth was a unique Jazz Rock guitarist. One of my bosses in the early 90's was one of Alan's students, and he played in a local jazz band.

Yes, all musical roads eventually lead to Progressive Rock, as Alan played in the Progressive Rock Supergroup UK. Jazz is awesome. I like 1920's/30's jazz.
