Aelyria wrote:Well, there are two answers to that question.

The first answer is my dis-interested, neutral evaluation says. The second is my personally-invested, non-neutral belief says.

From a neutral standpoint, you need to carefully evaluate which things have been suppressed that should not be. Do not drag your feet about it, but do not turn on all the lights simultaneously either. I cannot teach you the wisdom you need to pick the right option. I can only point the way and support with thoughts on particular solutions.

From my personal standpoint, I am of course eager to encourage a fellow nation to give its people the freedom to choose, speak, and live as they will, because I believe that a choice only has moral weight when it is not coerced. A robot hard-wire programmed to say "ɪ ʟᴏᴠᴇ ʏᴏᴜ" does not actually have love for its creator, it simply acts exactly as it was made to. In like sense, a person forced to do a moral thing at gunpoint is not actually demonstrating moral character.

However, I do recognize that you want to preserve your culture and values, so you're looking to target the most effective things to change your position. In order, I personally (NOT my dis-interested neutral stance) recommend looking for issue responses that repeal the following policies:
1. State Press
2. Polygamy
3. Corporal Punishment
4. Permanent Marriage
5. Autocracy

Removing these policies, especially state press, polygamy, and corporal punishment, will have the greatest impact on giving your people the ability to choose how they live and on reducing state-caused injury to them. The ability to speak freely (within reason) is vital to a healthy relationship between government and governed. Corporal punishment is a permanent solution to what should be a temporary problem. And polygamy almost always results in abuse of power as one spouse controls the situation and the others are beholden to them: two-person marriage can still have unhealthy power dynamics, but it implicitly puts the partners on equal footing. (Also, as I like to joke, "there is no general solution to the three-body problem.")

Thank you for hehe lengthy explanation of your advice. I can't repeal autocracy or state press though as the Union is a one party state. I was thinking more about liberalising the restrictive social policies but I also want SAS to keep its Islamic values and to keep the deeply religious population happy.

There will be no peace, there will always be war.

Believe it or not, empirical evidence suggests otherwise!

Despite the fact that we have had both far more people around to get killed, and dramatically more deadly weapons than any previous century, fewer deaths per capita to war happened in the 20th century than any prior century for which we have reliable records! As education and economic development spread, they almost always tend to discourage violent solutions to conflict. It's not because people have suddenly become hardcore pacifists--it's because war is messy and expensive and disruptive. It's just easier to resolve conflicts via non-physically-violent means, like diplomacy, trade, sanctions, etc.

Humanity as a bulk can easily be dragged down by its worst elements....but even its worst elements seem to have figured out that it's more useful to engage in exchange and leveraging a market, rather than just taking. To torture a metaphor, steal a fish and you eat for a day, get a contract for fish and you and everyone you know eats well for years.
