Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Starting in three years, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs working alongside side the Customs and Tariffs Bureau will be implementing an electronic travel authorization for all visa-free foreign travelers. This is not a visa and is not to be confused as such.

A person can apply for an electronic travel authorization online with the approval process taking anywhere from a couple days or up to a week. The electronic travel authorization is electronically linked to a person’s passport and is valid for five years.

The fee is ¥1,500 ($10) and based on current travel numbers it is expected to generate up to ¥55,303,525,200 ($368,700,000) in revenue. The revenue will be directed to improve Japan’s port of entry’s and based on current travel numbers approximately 32% of the revenue will be directed towards improving ports of entry in the Japanese Province of Taiwan.
