Congress approves law banning nuclear weapons

A bill proposed by the opposition party Acción Democrática found near instant support in the National Congress, and after a unanimous positive vote in the Senate Chamber, it was codified into law.

As one deputy expressed: "It is one way of expressing the will of all Argentines that our nation wants to steer clear from the dangers associated with these kind of weapons."

Article 1
The Argentine Republic declares itself as a country free of nuclear weapons.

Article 2
The use of energy, elements, or materials generated from nuclear fission is strictly restricted, for posterity and throughout the national territory, to scientific, medical, and energetic purposes of an entirely peaceful nature.

The National Government is prohibited from developing national technology, and/or acquiring by any means technology of foreign origin that contravenes this provision.

Article 3
The National Atomic Energy Commission, as the government agent supervising the operations of Nucleoeléctrica Argentina S.A., will enforce this law with respect to the import, export, handling, transportation, storage, and/or dismantling of nuclear elements and materials.

In the event of an irregularity in compliance with this law, the CNEA will notify the Ministry of Defense, simultaneously authorizing an intervention if necessary to maintain the provisions of this law.

Article 4
The permanence, storage, or transport of nuclear weapons operated by military forces of another nation is prohibited throughout the national territory.

Access to or permanence in the national territory will be denied to any foreign-flagged land vehicle, aircraft, or vessel that possesses or is suspected of possessing nuclear weapons.

Compliance with this article will be the entire responsibility of the Ministry of Defense.

Article 5
The Argentine Republic commits to actively participate in all instruments or international collective actions whose objective is the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons in the region and in the world.
