Region: Turkic Union
To begin with, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is a person that I admire the most throughout the world history.
But let's go back in history to understand this situation.
You do understand that Hagia Sofia became a museum only in 1934, right? Before that it was a mosque, and yes long before that it was originally a church.
But the reason why legendary Atatürk made that uneasy decision was to erase Turkey's remaining Reparations Debt of 183 billion dollars and most importantly to regain sovereign control over Bosphorus and Dardanelles!
In simple words, we convert this mosque into a museum and Greece and Soviet Union will take our side on those two aforementioned points in League of Nations.
Atatürk made that beautiful diplomatic move and got what he wanted.
Again, Mustafa Kemal is a true Hero to me, but could you define your understanding of his progressivism please?
