I'm bound by contract to acknowledge it lest that energy comes out in other ways like forcing me to wear ugly sandals or cut my hair super short

I think that's how it should be. Something that exists that is meaningfully important to such a large group of people, but not everyone needs to take part in it.

It's also fascinating watching the sh*ttier side of my family always complain about how degenerate and in their face it is, despite the fact that they talk about it far more than the LGBT community does lol

Ah yes; well to be fair, I use the annual Eurovision Song Contest for that. One week of horrible music and complicated score keeping per year is a small price to pay to keep my 'membership' :)
