The rite of passage is at 12th birthday when the shaman or shamaness gives you a special herb (totally not drugs on kids...probably how Magarati kids can stay for 12 hours at school :P ) to induce visions of the kid's Varga. The kid is then tasked to catch the Varga. By tradition, the Varga is a recently deceased parent or relative or close friend who has reincarnated to become together with the person.

If the kid fails or has no vision of the Varga, the same thing is tried on 13th birthday...if that fails on 14th and 15th and so on.

Since many stupid kids started dying in the past when searching for their Vargas (and some in rural villages still do), the gov now hands them at their 7th Grade through a special examination grading and lottery process .
