Colonial Craze 3/6

With the need for ports through already mapped and charted territory. The more well known ports that were spread through the sea were marked for taking. With San Juan being a part of it. Having been founded by the spanish, it was the last friendly spanish port before the long voyage to cross the atlantic sea. Having been a key point in the spanish treasure fleets. The port was one of the most well defended, creating a large series of defences for the port and Bay. Along with being a good port. A good size garrison could keep control of the whole island of Puerto Rico well armed and suppield, instead of just holding onto the coast and city.

Taking the island was expected to be a little harder however. As scouting reports of the inland benign overgrown with jungle. And evidence of small but numerous tribes spread through the island. The two vessels of Kraken and Capital Venture were sent with 700 men to take the island, along with supplies to hold and rebuild the island’s capital.

Having arrived in the abandoned city, the ships were already attacked by some of the more violent tribals just by sailing into the port. Though quickly dispatched it opened to a much more challenging operation for the Union. Having already been fired upon the union forces were quick to land in the older town of San Juan. The ships tied up in the abandoned coast guard station within the city, and moved to secure the island. Setting up along the older fortifications the city was built upon and forming a post along the Bridges leading to the rest of the island.

The part of Durango that was of interest to the Republic was the West, where the city with the same name as the state resided. South of that, you had mountains. Lots and lots of mountains. It’s partly the reason why they’ve resisted annexation for so long: cavalry doesn’t work well here, and the foot soldiers, while competent, is outmatched by local forces, tailored for this terrain. There have been incidents where columns, sticking to the low ground, had guerrillas crash upon them from the slops and the valley tops, annihilating them before dissipating into the endless rainforests.

However, a new cabal of planners, spearheaded by Captain Miguel Gloria, have a theory. By establishing chains of forts, called “pins” in their proposal, the Republic can “pin down” a region for further use. This is a good model for areas with hostile locals. Pin forts must be sufficiently built and garrisoned to withstand raider gangs and bandits, with a system of communication to call reinforcements should a greater force assault them.

This is a radical departure from the previous, peaceful form of expansion they have practiced. But Alfred can see potential in this line of thought, and permitted it’s practical test in the mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental. Their first implementations were crude. Fabric tents surrounded by a 2-meter wooden wall, botched together from logs chopped down right then and there. A hump in the center allows for observation of outside the fort and firing from the inside.

These, and others like it, are peppered on mountaintops and other high ground, because the high ground is an advantage (at least according to a line from an old movie). The local resistance seems to have not yet made any attempts at overrunning these. Perhaps they decided they don’t have equipment to take one of the forts, but scouts can still occasionally spot groups of men slithering around the jungle and the caves, so they aren’t out of the picture yet.

Regardless, if they don’t do anything soon, the Republican stranglehold on this land will grow with time. Every day they are idle is a day for fortifying the fortifications, making them stronger and more assault-proof than before. The planners envisioned concrete pillboxes and bunkers, like military defenses of the pre-war, washing away any attack with overwhelming firepower and nearly impenetrable armor. “Let them bleed themselves to death against our walls. Then our people can move in and settle.”

Amidst all this optimism, a recon note from day 17 of the operation went unnoticed. It reads that they have spotted a “large, metallic tube machine”, carried on the shoulders of the insurgents. The weapon appears to be a large caliber bullet or explosive launcher. If the latter is true, this thing can prove a challenge to the wooden and stone walls. Foreshadowing.

As knowledge of largely organised states has been only a rumor passed from by caravan to caravan through the wasteland. With the news of another player has caused excitement and worry from the factions within the Union senate. Now with this in mind an expedition was sent out towards the Floridian coast, headed by Captain Wickam with the BRUS Vicker and Cayman making his expedition. The force was told to attempt to make contact with the mysterious state, and hopefully make a good first impression to open up trade with the state.

Of Claimants and Adventurers, pt. 1
Alexander Campbell, fourth son of Laird Campbell, was what one could call a Malcontent. One could forgive him for being frustrated, faced with the probability that he would never inherit the Lairdship and as the undoubted future recipient of the clan's worst property as he was.

This frustration tended to manifest itself in wild behavior. He was well-known for wild horse rides through the Boroughs and drunken brawls in numerous taverns. He had a reputation (though possibly undeserved) among the commoners as a ladies' man who had bedded half the girls on New Alba and plenty of its matrons as well.

All this, though, was entertainment, the channeling of Alexander's frustration. What he really wanted was glory and land of his own. The only thing was, he didn't know how to get it - so he got drunk and laid instead.

One drunken night, though, one of his friends suggested the solution. There was plenty of land outside of New Alba, populated by savages and women. Why not just take over some piece of land somewhere else?

Alexander didn't remember much of that night but he did remember that. At first he called it crazy, but the more he thought about it, the more appealing it seemed to him. Why not, after all? He had nothing to lose by going through with it, and everything to gain. He was no slouch with a sword and a decent commander (according to his friends, at least) and the savages of the Mainland should be a piece of cake to take over.

After a few weeks he approached his friends in a sober moment, asking if they'd support him. They enthusiastically agreed to join him so long as they got land of their own. So it was that Alexander became an adventurer, though he didn't know it.

First thing to do was recruit an army. 11 noblemen did not a conquering army make, whatever their opinions of their own combat ability. There were, however, plenty of other disaffected sons (and daughters) willing to join up at the promise of riches, land, and glory. The venture even attracted a number of commoners who were promised their own freeholds independent of the clan structure. Altogether, Alexander managed to raise 800 soldiers. Their armament and training varied wildly and few of them had ever fought in the shieldwall before, but the Adventurers did not concern themselves with that, confident the savages would fall before their unstoppable resolve.

After some deliberation, Alexander announced their target as the ruins of Sherbrooke, which he intended to rename Dun Alexander after himself. And so the Adventurers set off on their Adventure.

"How long shall these pressing matters continue to occupy your President's time? If it is all the same to you, it would be better for us to press on and wait in your capital for these matters to settle and for the meeting to take place. Between you and I, the Presidium has become rather unsettled due to the long silence between our nations and some truly radical propositions have been raised, ones which I would prefer to see stowed away with news of this upcoming meeting."

The Secretary was suddenly in difficulty: "You have to worry from the New Confederate States, we never come back on our word, we are simply in a..." once again Monroe thought of the dangerous situation his country was, and, seeing the suspicioun of their neighbors, he revealed the truth "Oh, for Lee's sake! The Secretary regained his composure: "We are dealing with this situation, but no one is allowed to get near neither Nashville or the President until we are done. But do not worry, the traitors will soon have what they deserve."

That the Secretary, openly praising long dead men as demigods, would call the traitors fanatics meant a great deal or none at all. "I see. In that case, should we wait for this matter to be settled or should we return to the Directorate? I suppose it would depend on how long it will take for your loyalists to defeat the traitors."

The calm answer of the foreign Emissary of the Directorate was a bit unsettling, but at least he didn't show any desire to exploit the NCS current situation: "We'll gladly host you here until the problem with the traitors is over, our predictions suggest that they should be dealt with in a reasonable time. This is what we recommend. But feel free to return to your lands if you want to."

Domestic RP/ Part 5

The situation was dire. The Radicals had gained the loyalty of many NCS divisions, or at least of their leading officers, through lies such as the President had abandoned them and Nashville, leaving his henchman Graves to keep in check the Senate and the population, or by directly buying their allegiance with caps and favors.
The traitors sudden attack caught many units off guard, about half of the city loyal defenders were either dead or captured before the news even arrived to the Vice President. In a matter of hours all but the downtown had fallen to the traitors before their attack could be stopped, thanks to the defenses set before. However, the numerical comparison between the two forces was clearly on the side of the rebels, they had by far more men and, since the loyalists were under siege, only they could count on a steady stream of supplies. However, the defenders had the advantage of time, since all they had to do was to resist until the arrive of the main force under the President in just a few days, but resisting for that time in such difficult conditions was for sure a challenge.
The defenders also had another advantage, by controlling the downtown, they holded much higher buildings, which the broken walls and windows due to the nuclear blast and the time had only made even better shooting positions, in spite of the traitors which could only advance in the low rubble and makeshift buildings around.
But all in all, again, the situation was dire, just as they planned, the traitors strike caught completely unprepared the Vice President and his forces, and now only their bravery, determination and skill, blocked the path of the Radicals to total control of the city.
Eight days of hell awaited them.

Secretary Monroe seemed indeed glad of the Emissary response: "You are not the first that we met to have abandoned savage ways, but is always an exceptional occasion. We always have much to learn from those that don't behave as our old oppressors, and which actions almost led to the complete destruction of humanity. I'm glad to hear your people would like to know more about our ways and our strifes, and I assure you this also goes in the other way. Sadly, in this time of hardship, I don't carry gifts to seal our friendship as the tradition would require. Maybe we can spare some of our slaves, they aren't really needed here at the moment, actually they would be less mouths to feed in this troublesome moment, but I would never want you to think we are giving you the junk we don't want".

Emissary Davidson's brain began to enter a state of semi-frenetic thinking as soon as the word "slave" crawled out of the Secretary's mouth, even as his expression barely changed due to his long training as an Emissary. Michael calmly replied, "A gift sincerely given could never be considered junk. Seeing the faces of the others, the Secretary was sure they really enjoyed their gift: "Well, glad to see you are happy to take them, we should have around a dozen that we take here in Chattanooga that haven't been sold, sent to the camps, or with the army of the President. Emissary Davidson gregariously shook his head and stated for clarification, while simultaneously stretching the truth, "In the Directorate, our slaves are ultimately owned by the government and employed for public works and the more dangerous and menial forms of labor by a bureau named the Securitate. Since they are generally acquired through our conquests, they are unsuitable for private ownership even after they have been broken in and their bad habits curbed through instruction. Even then, the more aggressive specimens are simply unsuitable for that sort of work and are granted to the Commissariat so their tendencies can be used constructively. Colonial Craze 4/6

Now with a solid base to operate from on the island, the Union army began forcing out the natives from the surrounding city, using the infantry to scout out the targets and camps. While the 8.8 were used to flush them out. The resulting few days left much of the city abandoned by anyone but the Union army.

Later benign approach by a more peaceful tribal group. After a discussion with some of them it turned out the Union men had landed in the middle of an island wide war between two big tribal groups. Which from what the officer in charge could figure was a heated debate of cannibalism good vs cannibalism bad. With the Union having fought off the cannibalistic Carib’s, the other tribe called themselves the Boricua. And were looking for the union to join their war to force the caribs off the island of Puerto Rico. Though the technical objective was secured with the taking of San Juan, the officers of the union expedition figured it would be a better choice to make friends with the more peaceful tribe and force out the cannibals.

With an agreement to fight along with the Boricua, the union army took a few of the .50 cal from the windjammers in the harbor to help out in the upcoming battle. And after talking with the tribal warriors of where the Caribs are. The Union set off to take the stronghold of Caguas to the south of San juan. Having been sent out as a force of 200 with 7 M2 Brownings. The plan was to destroy the walls with explosives, allowing the machine guns to do most of the work. Though once arrived after slogging through the jungle. The application of a few incendiary grenades caused a fire to engulf the stronghold, spreading to the whole town from home to home. With the Union troops guning down who could escape the burning town. Without their stronghold the Caribs tried to hold out along the eastern shore, but the sailing windjammers that were brought around for support made little remain of the tribals. With the Broicua taking control of the island.

Now with a positive report and some goods to trade the Union formed an agreement with the Broicua. Forming them as another protectorate within union territory, spitting the island in half between the two with the line being formed from San Juan to Ponce. With the Union taking the east and the Boricua taking the west.

Expansion 34/Operation Containment

Following the relatively bloodless conquest and occupation of Walhalla, the 1st Unit's replacements had been deemed sufficiently experienced and the long march along the western border continued, moving along the border with the United Prefectural Directorate's westernmost Prefectures. As they advanced, vanguard elements seeped into the province designated Pickens after a notable pre-war city on recovered maps of South Carolina and were able to quickly determine that the province was relatively devoid of organized raider elements and was in fact semi-united beneath a confederation of settlements. This confederation was based in the very city that gave the province its name and had risen to prominence through a combination of a effective leadership, a professional militia and a strong grasp of the resource rich lands outside of their settlement. In pre-war terms, Pickens would be a post-apocalyptic example of a city state and by all accounts, the settlement had made a good attempt at creating a nation state from nothing, but that did not matter to the Directorate. Pickens was within territory claimed by it and as such, it would either accept peaceful assimilation or forced annexation, there would be no middle ground. The Emissariat, considered crucial for ensuring a peaceful end to the matter, was dispatched in force even as Commissariat elements filtered into the region quietly.

Pickens, South Carolina

Commissar Victoria Volkov wondered when her task had boiled down to sitting menacingly at the side of the Emissary in charge of the mission while he calmly explained the Directorate's proposal to the rising din of the assembled notables of Pickens. Oh, they had accepted the proposal, that much she could gleam, but what seemed to be stalling talks was the various caveats that came along with annexation. For all the parts of constructing additional infrastructure and industry to improve their lives, they were far more interested in all the education and military points, which she could understand. Eventually, she reckoned, they would calm down and accept the treaty in full, since they were far from stupid and they knew that this was as much as formality as making sure their people thought they had fought long and hard at the negotiating table for reduced terms. Of course, a place in the administration of the Prefecture was to be expected and the same for their small core of officers in their militia with the Commissariat following their attendance of the military academies. In the end, Pickens would be annexed into the UPD and become another Prefecture, its previous administration rolled into the Secretariat and it would conform and adhere to the laws of the Charter. Better to ride the wave than drown in it, after all.

Pickens, South Carolina/Aftermath

Mia sniffled and rubbed her nose again, feeling a little down and worrying that she might have a cold or worse, the thought of that would normally make her panic, but not with all the excitement lately. She was just another orphan living on the streets, but even she heard the whispers of the adults over the last few days, growing more and curious while they were getting more and more scared. When she woke up today, she heard some people talking about soldiers marching into the settlement and meeting with the town council, though she did not really understand what most of it meant, though the adults seemed calmer than the past few days. She didn't see any of the soldiers apparently inside of the settlement and, feeling disappointed, returned to her little corner where she hid her stash and slept. Her heart sank when she came around and saw that it had been picked over, by some of the older kids maybe, and she started coughing forcefully, eventually falling to her knees with tears running down her face. Something fell behind her and she froze, turning around to stare in fright at the sight of a man standing at the mouth of the alley, wearing a gas mask and carrying a rifle.

She scrambled back and her back met a wall, while she blubbered through tears and snot, "G-get away, no no no". The gas masked man tilted his head and began to walk over, slinging his rifle over his back with a strap. Mia cried even hard as he got closer and her sniffles echoed throughout the alley, as the man knelt before her and reached up to his mask. Her next set of crying and sniffling was choked off at the sight of the woman's face, a set of kindly eyes and a worried smile beaming down at her, an angelic voice asking, "Hey, kiddo, where are your parents?". Mia shook her head and mumbled, "Don't know.", to which the woman soldier frowned before she wiped away her frown with a smile and said, "Come on, kiddo, let's get you of here.". She held out a hand and Mia, not knowing why, took it, getting hauled up and into the woman's strong arms, her malnourished frame no problem at all for Commander Holly Brown. Commissar Volkov would raise an eyebrow as Holly came marching into the mess carrying a stick of a girl and bullied the cooks into handing over some food for the kid, but would ultimately shrug and let it go.

The last port that was marked for taking was one of the more important ones thanks to its location within the Caribbean. Sitting right in the center of the Caribbean sea, Kinston stands as an important port to hold for any nation looking to take control of the southern sea. Situated upon the island of Jamaica, the port was the inheritor of the Legendary Port Royal. Having been destroyed by an earthquake, Kingston became another famous port. Heavily influenced by privateers and pirates until their end. Now it stands as a lonely and abandoned city as many after the great war have. A small detachment of two ships and 380 men were sent out to colonise the island, consisting of the Traveler and Perseus.

With little expected of resistance the Traveler and Perseus moved into the bay, finding the city sparsely populated. With much of the terminals filled with the rusting wrecks of old freight container ships. The captains simply moored the fleet into the coast guard station that stood at the mouth of the harbor. Having began to unload the equipment and supplies, the Union officer in charge ordered the men to occupy the fort in the station. Giving them a solid camp to operate from. Calling the new fort as Fort Royal, a call to the sunken city the ship's hold themselves above.

While Kinston the city was largely abandoned by locals, the countryside was still filled with tribal villages as found by the union men patrolling the island. All that were willing to talk with called themselves the Reggae, an extremely pacifist and drug addled group. they seemed to be obsessed around a tribal religion around the older faith of Rastafari. Believing the man named Bob Marley to have been a prophet of god sent to the earth. Though peaceful they were unwilling to talk with the Union officers, calling them “uniformed slaves”. Though the debate was held to just clear them from the countryside, after one lieutenant found the museum of their prophet they were fer more willing to talk to the soldiers. Though they held little in material to trade besides the basics of life, and a host of cannabis they constantly tried to get the union troops to smoke. And little to want from the UNion besides music players and food. The promise of rebuilding their prophets home and providing more useful medical services and supplies finally brought the tribal chiefs to the table to talk. After some discussion the ‘sale’ of the city of Kingston and the stretch of coast to the mapped town of May Pen. The local Regge’s would also become a protected part of the union. With the price of a few shipments of rations and a written agreement to rebuild the ‘home of the prophet’, the port of Kingston was now legally owned by the union. With the garrison ensuring the agreement is held.

With the natives pacified, the union looked to exploit the city. Picking through the ruins of Kinston to drag out any goods. Having started to break apart the hulks in the harbor to clear out the port terminals for more ships. With the port now under union control, the whole of the Caribbean sea was now well in range of union merchants and ships. Leaving no coast out of reach for the Union and her Navy.

After some talking with residents it becomes clear this wasteland state while definitely republican has a case of early democracy with only one party and no real opposicion politically. However, it is interestingly you see Humans and Ghouls going about day normally and completely freely interacting in fact with even better standards of living for the standard wasteland typical city state government. But upon the bridge you see Super Mutants unarmed and Human guards around that location and are told to avoid the bridge thats being worked on as its still being repaired.
