I think it also does depend on technological development and the specific situation of the opposing forces as well.
An attack against someone with full radar coverage and night-time vision apparatus might do utterly nothing, while an attack against someone who lacks one or the other might be more successful.
Of course, in the end, unless the enemy force is utterly incompetent or woefully out of date, a night attack will not do very much besides cause an intense, dangerous, deadly battle.
