The Navy of Neu Engollon was originally a ragtag collection of independent Neu Engollian, Roman, and other national commanders, some who were privateers in the Southern Madurin Sea, others who were legitimate merchants willing to convert their ships. As Neu Engollon didn’t yet have a coastline, some of the Roman states allowed the vessels to operate out of their ports, while the privateers operated out of coves and remote islands far out in the southern Madurin Sea.
Neu Engollon was one of the first nations to fall victim to the newly resurgent Gaulic Empire, under Emperor Ney. After the defeat of the last Neu Engollian army on the central plain near Langenthal, Gaul moved quickly to occupy the Confederacy with a mix of Gaul, native, colonial, and troops from some of the northern Roman States allied with the Empire, which eventually occupied the southeastern cantons.
The Helvetic Republic, the regime installed by the Gaulic occupation under Pieter Ochs, was beset immediately by a strong resistance to the occupation and the Regime’s Governors sent out to administer the conquered cantons did not often last months, if even weeks before the Resistance strung the traitors up.
.
Meanwhile, the Gaul Empire was slowly moving their way east across the continent and a Coalition was building against them. The Neu Engollian captains threw in their lot with a new southern Madurin coalition fleet that defeated a major Gaul and Roman fleet off Bezi Island. Along with major battles on land, this was the beginning of the end. The last actions the new Neu Engollian navy would perform was ferrying troops deeper along the southern Gaul coast to aid in the sieges of Paritte and Le Rocheaux.
With the full liberation of Neu Engollon and the seizure of the Gaulic territory to their southwest and Liguria and Piemonte to the southeast, Neu Engollon finally had their coast. The Council in Geneva immediately appointed Patrice Fendault, who had been a key figure leading the resupply efforts to the Resistance, as Grand Admiral of the Navy of the Confederacy. Fendault set out to organize the motley group of Captains and boats, expanding them into a formal navy to protect a new merchant and fishing fleet.
The first half of the 19th Century was full of instances where the Neu Engollian Navy had to fend off bullying Gaulic, Roman, Espicutan, Taraniman, and Saescian ships; along with the ever present pirates, to establish themselves as a formidable force not to be pushed aside.
From the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries, the Neu Engollian navy did not see direct conflict, other than protecting Confederacy shipping from piracy. There was also a great risk from other powers that tried to sink Neu Engollian shipping heading to their opponents’ docks. Neu Engollon’s neutrality guaranteed that they would sell goods, and even arms, to all sides in the Madurin continental conflicts of the era, but even sometime allies like Gaul and RFS did not always respect that neutrality or point of view.
While a major war was fought on land in 1920-21 with neighboring Austrakia, life went on pretty much as usual on the southern Madurin coast, aside from the other continental wars that brought heightened tension. By that time, even that was considered normal for the Neu Engollian trade and fishing fleets, and the naval vessels that shepherded them.
As for Austrakia, it had no allies to intercede or intercept Neu Engollian shipping, and Confederacy finished goods were much in demand on the continent, and on Tavlyria, especially as other nations became embroiled in civil wars or enacted treaties in greater wars with neighbors as the 20th century progressed. There was universal demand for Neu Engollian trade over the Austrakians, who had much less to offer. The Austraks had attempted several times to ineptly build an empire themselves to rival the Gauls, Espicutans, and Saescians and failed heartily. Had the war even continued beyond a year, Neu Engollon would have blockaded Austrakia to starvation levels, and was locking in all the sea trade routes that Austrakia drew in supplies from friendly nation’s ports.
Neu Engollon continued to remain neutral in all other conflicts but, of course, with the Bundesrepublik. The major war was done in a year’s time, 1921, other than some other border skirmishes that continued on into the next century.
It was 1952, when the navy formally became the Neu Engollon Defense Navy, in line with the other force branches who took on the Defense nomenclature. This was in keeping with the shift to firm up the neutrality in the Confederacy’s constitution.
While politicians debated involvement with security alliances in the region which clashed with the Constitutional responsibility of neutrality, the NEDN continued to seek modernization.
As a firm observer of the Western Madurin Treaty Alliance, and then the succeeding TSO, Neu Engollon felt obligated with the dawn of the 21st Century to update their navy, and so they began to seek out ships from foreign vendors such as Halcyon, HIA, and Umberlee, as there were not any major domestic naval vessel manufacturers to speak of.
They were just in time to contribute some of their new ships to the coalition effort in Qasifya to defeat the QLA and Islamic radical warlords there, or at least put a dent in their terror operations. While politicians debated the legality of it back home in Geneva, the Federal Council had already set the ball rolling under the guise of a ‘peacekeeping’ operation for regional security measures.
Elements of the NEDN 1st Fleet joined other coalition ships in blockading the Qasifyan coast in order to prevent seaborne supplies from reaching the QLA and allied warlords to that cause. They also worked to bring ashore and secure supplies for the ground forces pursuing the terrorists and defeating the anti-Coalition Qasifyan militias. Marveille, the Gaulic territory, was the major port that most of the Coalition operated out of for the duration of the conflict.
When the Yellow Star Republic invaded Glisandia and Jumnia, Neu Engollon again committed to the TSO by sending the 2nd Fleet, along with airlifting several specialized units to Orcadia and Jumnia. The NEDN ships participated in the Coalition’s destruction of the YSR 1st Fleet off their coast, which saw the surviving ships and the weakened YSR 2nd Fleet head to port, never to leave again, hampering their ability to open corridors for foreign resupply.
As Qasifya wound down, some ships from the NEDN 1st Fleet joined the Coalition in Northern Tavlyria, while most of that fleet returned home, to relieve the Roman navy that was guarding both the RFS and Neu Engollian coasts during the decade of conflict.
