Wellsia wrote:Except it shouldn’t effect Alteran shipping at all. It might cut off a day from going around Costavozka to Nhoor or Solaryia, but the cost off going through it would be greater than fuel spent going the long route.

True, logistically it would have a minimal direct impact on Alteran shipping. However, the principle of the matter is that no nation should be able disrupt an international route for their own gain. Today Costavozka, who next?

Not saying Altera is going to rattle the sabre and charge into the Argean Sea; but it will be standing to support - directly or indirectly - Costavozka with their stance.

Free trade is vital to a free world.

I wonder if that’s what France and Great Britain called it when they attacked Egypt over the Suez Canal?

The Tsunterlands wrote:Even if it isn't closed having a conflict so close to the canal will certainly have a impact on trade and the cost of transporting goods. For a country like the Tsunterlands which depends on imports to feed its population and keep the power on, anything that could prevent the free flow of trade through the canal's is potentially disastrous.

As seen during Iersheno Conflict. I'll probably abstain from even thinking of getting involved in any way though, my nation would have no reason

Good thing Remodio mostly relies on Southern Sea and Eterna Sea

Wellsia wrote:I wonder if that’s what France and Great Britain called it when they attacked Egypt over the Suez Canal?

Little different there; Egypt nationalised the canal - even though it was owned by a foreign power/company; confiscated it. Israel then invaded Egypt, then supported by UK and France to install a more European/Israel-friendly regime. US denounced it and threated to recall debt (as THEY had just installed their pro-America, anti-UK/France regime) and wanted to stay top-dog.

UK and France backed down; solidifying US's grasp on European and Arabian politics for the next few decades.

Askusia wants to use its geographical position to block trade to/from a specific nation; such distruption would impact trade, trust and relations throughout the region.

don't forget the other half of the reason why they backed down. The USSR also condemned the action, but made france and britain realize that both the USA and the USSR agreed with each other and that was the scary part

Can you blame them, if they are at war with Costavozka, why would they let an enemy ship sail into their national waters. When the Gael War breaks out, you going to keep trading with Balnik?

In reality, it is to Wellsia’s benefit for the Central Canal to be closed. That would put more traffic to the Southern Canal and around S. Argus, which would be a financial boom to Wellsian ports.

Planning on posting a news article of Arvento becoming a major hub for drug and human trafficking due to the Tsunter's Corsair Mafia activity. Perhaps the main drug-producing country in the Mesder and Southern seas. If interested in having your nation being affected by the drug epidemic, feel free to hit me up.

Overview

The Federated States of Domanania has a relatively low crime rate compared to other nations of similar development. The crime rate currently is 2.9 times higher than the crime rate in 1975, with the total number of crimes committed rising from 501,719 to 1.45 million. The crime rate fluctuates based on major events. The crime rate rose by 16% during the 80's finacial crisis, but fell 23% during the Isle Cup in the 2000's. There is a rising concern with crimes committed by foreign individuals, targeting the still tech illiterate but increasingly affluent population. This number is highest among the population aged 30-40 years old, who have grown up with a larger electronic presence than older generations, but have fallen behind current technology trends such as social media, online markets, crypto currency, and digital investments.

Organized Crime

See Also: Kaekte

Domanania has undergone severe cultural and economic changes since the start of the civil war in 1933. With these changes, crime has become a major issue in recent years. Most of the increase comes from rising violence and illegal activities connected to organized groups.

During the civil war, the FWD (later Congressional Republic) employed local gangs to protect leaders, disrupt enemy targets, and spy on Junta positions. Later when the Congressional Republic formed, they tolerated the continued use of local gangs as police and spies. This unfortunately allowed these groups to entrench and grow more powerful than republic police could deal with. During the 1950's and 60's, politicians made use of these gangs, guarding them from danger and disrupting the political rallies of competing politicians by using organized violence. These groups became known as "political gangs" or "henchmen", and gained a reputation for "encouraging" locals to vote for certain leaders through acts of violence and intimidation.

Following the end of the civil war in 1970, the gangs employed in Junta territories expanded their operations following the chaos during the collapse of the government. From 1971 to 1973 there was a series of gang wars fought in cities like Tavunt and Vaerthae between pro-congressional and pro-junta gangs. The Congressional republic implemented martial law in 1972 to curtail the violence. It took 16 months of martial law before the gang wars ended, with pro-congressional gangs taking over most of the territories. The fighting caused more than 3 million dollars in damages, with 311 people killed and another 1,017 injured (including gangsters, soldiers, and civilians).

Traditional Doman gangs used clubs, knives, swords, and makeshift weapons but deaths were usually limited as both sides would only fight until they lost a handful of members. Today's gangs still mostly use clubs, swords, and knives, but there has been a notable increase in the use of firearms. Doman law states forbids the ownership of most firearms, with some cases being allowed for former military members and the police. However, most of these firearms are either smuggled in or stolen. These guns are usually limited to small arms such as pistol, submachine guns, or hunting shotguns but recent reports show gangs in possession of surplus military rifles, shotguns, and even grenades in the most extreme cases.

In 1990, the government announced a "War on Crime" to uproot the entrenched gang system that had plagued the country for decades. From 1990-2007 the crime rate involving these gangs dropped 41%. However, with the country's increasing globalization politics and the opening of the country to foreign markets has given these gangs an opportunity to expand their operations. They have become larger in scale and broader in their fields of operations. These international linkages have started to include drug trafficking, financial fraud, weapons smuggling, and human trafficking.

Drugs

The use of drugs in Domanania is a lesser offense (with the maximum jail time for possession being 1 year); however, there are still drug related offenses in Domanania. Most of the drug related offenses occur in the Thutsaegae and Shorogae Districts. In 2019, there were 145 drug related crimes reported in the Thutsaegae area and 61 drug related crimes reported in the Shorogae area. Possession charges don't exceed 5 years jail time (for the worst offenders), while distribution or manufacturing can exceed 10 years.

Thutsaegae Police Chief stated that "Drugs are most common in the club network, with students and foreigners partaking the most as a quick way to make money.

Cocaine is the most popular drug among Domans, accounting for 78% of all drug arrests. Powdered Cocaine is the most common drug used among the middle and upper class, while crack cocaine is the most common drug in the lower classes. Party drugs such as ecstasy are increasingly common in the club scene and college students, but cocaine remains the most popular overall.

Murder

In Domanania, murder is uncommon. Most murders occur within the capital of Tavunt and lower income areas. Most murder cases are the result of domestic violence or assault by gang members that resulted in the death of an individual.

Corruption

Domanania places in the top 50% of most corrupt nations within The Western Isles. A report in 2005 found the level of corruption in small and large companies described corruption among high-ranking public officials as “serious”. Political leaders also contribute to a high corruption rate, as many still rely on political gangs to coerce votes, or receive "donations" towards their political campaigns.

In many cases, to avoid violating international agreements, leaders of businesses will "retire" and transfer a majority of their shares of their company to a relative and then run for office in Congress, but maintains close ties and secret obligations to their former companies. The upon their exit from local or national government, "buy" back their shares and return to the corporate scene.

Prostitution

Prostitution in Domanania is illegal, but is a lesser crime often only receiving 6 months prison time at most. According to the Western Isles Women's Development Institute, the sex trade in the country is estimated at $14 Billion in 2010. In 2014, the Doman Feminist Association along side the Doman Criminology Institute estimated that 1.2 million young women (1 in 25) participate in prostitution in some capacity. A similar report estimated 23% of young men pay for sex 2-4 times a month, with about 500,000 visiting prostitutes daily.

The sex trade involves some 160 million transactions in 2018, down from 173 million in 2012. Despite legal sanctions and police action, the sex trade in Domanania continues to flourish as sex workers actively resist the country's activities.

Human Trafficking

Sex trafficking and exploitation have pervaded all levels of Doman society. Male and female perpetrators in Domanania come from a wide range of backgrounds and a number are members of or facilitated by organized crime syndicates and gangs. Some government officials, troops, celebrities, and police, as well as foreigners, have been complicit in sex trafficking. Most recently, when 8 congressmen from the Democratic People's Party were implemented in a sex trafficking ring, leading to their resignations during the election cycle.

The scale of sex trafficking in Domanania is difficult to know because of the underground nature of sex trafficking crimes, the fact that only a small minority of cases are reported to the authorities, and other factors. Traffickers have used the internet websites, email, and apps to lure victims. Methods such as cybersex trafficking have also been used. The Doman government has implemented strict laws to combat human trafficking, but have been criticized for only taking serious efforts in preventing the movement of people's in and out of the country. They have been accused of being apathetic towards the ongoing issues within the country.

Doman citizens, particularly women and girls, have been trafficked inside the country as well as abroad. Foreign victims are often trafficked into the country. Children and those in poverty are especially vulnerable. Victims are deceived, threatened, and or forced into prostitution and their passports and other documents are often taken. Many are enslaved in debt bondage.

Male and female traffickers in Domanania come from all social and economic classes. Traffickers are often members of or facilitated by crime organizations and gangs. Traffickers use internet websites, email, and apps to lure in victims. Sex trafficking is linked to the entertainment industry and women and girls are also trafficked to businesses catering to military servicemen and contractors.

Ethnic Domans in diaspora are also targeted by human traffickers to use as slave labor in their communities or abroad. Doman traffickers are also linked to large numbers of foreign trafficking rings as well.

Terrorism

Domanania, while a mostly internally peaceful country, has suffered from organized terror groups for the last 50 years. Terrorism began during the civil war as acts comited by the Junta government in an attempt to frighten people away from supporting the Congressional Government. When the government collapsed and the civil war ended, radicals within the government and military went into hiding and declared the war will never end until the current government is destroyed.

From 1970-1978, acts of terror were random and unorganized from radicals and supporters of the Junta Government, often targeting government buildings and public institutions. The government implemented martial law in many cities formerly under Junta control to combat organized crime and terror actions.

In 1981, an organized terror group known as the "Order of the Red Arrow" claimed responsibility for the bombing of a new federal bank in Tavunt. This became the first named and organized terror group in Domanania. Their name and symbology derive from Junta fascist iconography and philosophy. The group seeks the destruction of the current government, and to reinstate a regime similar to the Junta government.

While many organized groups would rise up in Domanania, government actions often destroyed smaller groups swiftly. The Order of the Red Arrow remains the largest group, responsible for 80% of all terror actions. The group was responsible for the assassination of Prime Minister Tarrus Kline.

Despite the scale of the terror actions, fewer than 5 confirmed terror attacks occur per year since 2007, with only 100 deaths and 500 injuries taking place in the same time period. Terrorism accounts for roughly $2 million in damages yearly. Most of their actions involved Improvised Explosives, or mass shootings in public areas.

Terror groups cooperate with Doman crime syndicates as a way to acquire funds and weapons.

The Societal Goshawk is a twin-engine, supermaneuverable, multirole fighter for the Baumish Aerial Forces (BAF). Initially envisioned purely as an aerial superiority fighter to counter the potentially lethal Alteran P.101 Shrike, the design subsequently evolved into a multirole fighter, due to the BAF opting to make use of its large airframe as strike and air supremacy aircraft. Like the Alavi AF-26 Gyrfalcon, the Goshawk was designed as a replacement for fighters such as the LinkAlavi AF-20 Harpy and the LinkAlavi AF-22 Peregrine. Both fighters were contestants for the Advanced Frontline Fighter program for the BAF which required a fighter with long endurance, heavy armament, outstanding agility, high speeds of up to Mach 2+, and good short-field performance. The design of the Goshawk larger design and its ability to perform better in air-to-air combat enabled the fighter to win the competition, while the AF-26 later won the Advanced Lightweight Fighter Program.

The fighter was first introduced into service by the BAF in 1983 with the main goal being air supremacy and to an extent, strike missions. Later models had improved and more refined capabilities allowing it to perform other roles such as air defense, aerial bombing, ground attack, interdiction, reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and escort. Built on an airframe designed for high-performance air combat, it quickly grew a formidable reputation as a deadly fighter due to its unbeatable agility and advanced sensors with long-range detection capabilities and advanced target tracking. Future upgrades also incorporated advanced targeting systems and data link integration, allowing the aircraft to effectively engage with multiple targets simultaneously and large multifunction displays, providing real-time data and enhanced information fusion to improve pilot ergonomics and situational awareness. The Goshawk has also proved to be a rather popular export fighter such as in Mairland and Kravato, both of whom favored the aircraft due to its lower purchasing and operating costs as compared to other fighters of similar sizes.

The Goshawk F1 is the initial production variant which is a trainer-and-combat fighter primarily used as an aerial superiority fighter with limited air-to-ground attack capabilities. The F2 is an interceptor variant equipped purely with air-to-air armament only and was proposed to Baumes, Costavozka, and Mairland, but was never ordered. The F3 is a carrier-based variant designed for the Costavozkan Navy, but was never bought and was eventually sold to the Kravatoan Navy. The F4 is an upgraded and modernized F1 that was first unveiled in 1999 and featured improved ground attack roles thanks to an increased ordnance and weapons load, along with improved radars and avionics along with a glass cockpit design. It also incorporates the use of an optional thrust vectoring system in order to further enhance its maneuverability. The F4 in turn is set to be replaced by the F5, a 4++ generation fighter featuring an active electronically scanned array radar, missile approaching system, an imaging infrared search and track, and new precision-guided targeting capabilities.

As of 2023, 170 aircraft remain in service in 3 nations. Kravato is the largest operator of the Goshawk with 88 aircraft in service with its Navy and Air Force. With over 226 units built over a 42-year production run, it remains the second most-produced Baumish fighter jet just behind the AF-26. Today, it is widely considered an engineering marvel, an influential design that has proved to be highly capable and successful and has influenced several other fighters throughout aviation history.

History

A Goshawk F4 over Baumes.
By the 1970s, the BAF was in need to replace its aging fighters. The LinkAlavi AF-20 Harpy, first introduced in 1956, was for a long time the main fighter aircraft in Baumes. Its incredible maneuverability and powerful canon gave it a clear advantage in close air-to-air combat. But by the turn of the 1970s, the AF-20 was no longer suitable for air combat missions, which had involved from within-visual-range combat to beyond-visual-range combat due to advancements in missile and rocket technology. The LinkAlavi AF-22 Peregrine was designed to replace it for higher-altitude intercepting missions and had a far heavier armament as compared to the AF-20. However, its actual air combat capabilities were quite limited due to its slow turning rate and poor agility, thus rendering it only useful for intercepting.

In 1969, Baumes learned of the development of the Alteran P.101 Shrike, a new generation of fighters designed for high-performance air combat with excellent maneuverability and acceleration. The Baumish government quickly realized that this could be a very serious threat to the already obsolete BAF fleet and was quick to issue a requirement for a new fighter that could outperform the P.101 in dogfights along with replacing nearly the entirety of the BAF's fleet. The Advanced Frontline Fighter program required a fighter with long-range, good short-field performance (including the ability to use austere runways), excellent agility, Mach 2+ speed, and heavy armament. The heavier and larger Goshawk design eventually won the contract to produce 60 airframes for the BAF. The first aircraft was finished by 1981 and it was introduced into service with the BAF just two years later in 1983.

The Goshawk F2 was introduced in 1987 as a possible replacement for the AF-22 in the BAF. 3 F1 airframes were extensively modified for a pure interceptor role with no ground attack capabilities. However, the BAF wasn't interested in an interceptor and did not order any. It was reintroduced in 1992 as one of the bidders for the Costavozkan Air Corps' FI-21 replacement. It lost to the Costavozkan Aerospace FI-35 and once again, none were ordered.

The Goshawk F3 is the deck-based variant designed for service with the Baumish Maritime Forces (BMF). It was proposed as part of a replacement program for the BMF's FI-21 naval variant fighter, which it did not find "suitable enough" for carrier operations. Sales fell through however, as the BMF eventually ordered the AF-26C with the main reason being the F3 being far too large for Baumish carriers. However, the project was revived in the mid-2000s when the Kravatoan Navy expressed interest in the F3. An agreement was reached in 2008 for 50 units to be delivered to the Kravatoan Navy for use on their aircraft carrier.

The Goshawk F4 is an upgraded variant with a greatly improved ground attack role and modern avionics, radars and sensors. A 3D thrust vectoring nozzle was also introduced for improved maneuverability, although this addition is optional. Software-controlled canards were also incorporated to increase lift ability and automatically deflect to allow high a angle of attack while also maintaining a reduced radar cross-section of 2.5 square meters as compared to the F1s 6 square meters radar cross-section. Relaxed stability was also enhanced using new computers, servos, and sensors as part of its new fly-by-wire system. Its new powerful integrated passive electronically scanned array radar can function in air-to-air and air-to-land/sea mode simultaneously and is equipped with a modern digital weapons system. The radar has a 400 km search range and a maximum 200 km tracking range, and 60 km in the rear hemisphere. It was first introduced in 2000 and went into service in 2003

The Goshawk F5 is the latest addition to the Goshawk fighter line. It was designed to replace the F4 by 2027, which by then is expected to be "inadequate" for use by the BAF. It is a 4++ generation fighter jet featuring an active electronically scanned array radar and new avionics to assist the fighter in performing poor-visibility precision ground strikes and aerial reconnaissance with optoelectronic radar. Although not a stealth aircraft, it has a radar cross-section of just 1 square meter thanks to the use of radar-absorbent materials. Hardpoint capacity was increased to 8,500kg of ordnance and engine power has been increased by 5%. 4 color liquid-crystal multi-function displays were also added, along with night-vision goggles and an additional display for the optical locator system. It was first introduced in 2020 and 21 out of its 60 orders have been completed so far.

Goshawk F1
The Goshawk F1 was the initial production design envisioned as a trainer-and-combat fighter designed primarily for air-to-air combat against adversaries such as the Alteran Aerospace P.101 Shrike and Doraltic LinkF-5. As such, its ground attack capabilities were limited and it served most of its existence as an air superiority fighter rather than a multirole fighter. Its basic design is reminiscent to the AF-26 fighter but is substantially larger. Another main difference is the Goshawk featuring a cross between a swept wing and a cropped delta wing while the AF-26 incorporates a swept wing. The aircraft also had Baumes' first operational fly-by-wire control system, which with relatively low wing loading and powerful basic flight controls allows for it to be an incredibly agile aircraft, controllable at even very low speeds and high angles of attacks of up to 120°. The fighter featured a coherent Pulse-Doppler radar with track-while scan and look-down/shoot-down capability and a nose-mounted infrared search and track system with a range of up to 100km. It is armed with a single LinkVarpa V-3 cannon and 10 hardpoints for missiles and other weapons with a capacity of up to 4,500kg. The F1 was subsequently replaced by the Goshawk F3, a development of it featuring improved ground attack and multirole capabilities.

Goshawk F2
In 1985, development of the Goshawk F2 interceptor fighter began. Essentially, it was a faster Goshawk F1 with no ground attack capabilities and excellent aerodynamic characteristics in contrast to other interceptors of the era. It was designed to replace the BAF's AF-22, which was infamous for its poor agility. The Goshawk F2 was presented and introduced to the public in 1987, with hopes of obtaining orders from Baumes. However, the BAF stated that a dedicated interceptor role was no longer needed, further commenting that "most multirole fighters can fulfill the same role". As such, Baumes never ordered any F2's and its entire fleet of interceptor aircraft was retired by the following year. The F2 was later submitted as a bidder in Costavozka's interceptor acquisition program in 1992, in which it lost to the Costavozkan FI-35.

Goshawk F3
The Goshawk F3 is the carrier-based variant of the Goshawk F1 in response to a mandate issued by the Costavozkan for a replacement of their FI-21 naval fighter. The structure was strengthened to tolerate carrier landing and the wings and stabilators are modified to be foldable to minimize space usage on the carrier. Furthermore, the wing was enlargened for slower stalling speed while the engines were upgraded and canards were installed. It competed against the AF-26C, which compared to the F3 was smaller and far less maneuverable. However, the size of the smaller AF-26C made it a more viable choice for carrier operations, which could fit a third more units on a carrier than the F3. Subsequently, the F3 project was never commissioned by Baumes. The aircraft would not meet any orders until 2008 when an agreement was reached between Baumes and Kravato to sell 40 units of the Goshawk F3 to the Kravatoan Navy. The first aircraft was delivered in 2009 with the order successfully completed by 2015.

Goshawk F4
During the 1990s, the BAF began a replacement program of their Goshawk F1s. Its poor ground performance and limited capabilities other than an aerial supremacy fighter forced the BAF to retire the F1 nearly 7 years earlier than its expected retirement age. Societal sought to improve and modernize the F1. A new radar was installed with the ability to operate both air-to-air and air-to-ground/sea modes and can also track 15 air targets and engage 4 simultaneously, which can even include cruise missiles and motionless helicopters. The F4 can also function as a mini airborne early warning and control aircraft. It can automatically transfer the coordinates of targets to at least 4 fighters. It can also detect ground targets such as tanks and can operate its forward-looking infrared cameras in both daytime and nighttime. Other avionics improvements include a satellite navigation system for all-weather performance, electronic counter-measure systems, and a high-accuracy navigation system. Also added are optional thrust vectoring nozzles for increased agility. This allows the F4 to be capable of near-zero airspeed at high angles of attack without stalling, and dynamic aerobatics at low speeds. Along with an automatically deflecting canard to allow high angle of attack flights, these additions make the F4 an extremely capable maneuverability. A new fly-by-wire system also allows the F4 for relaxed stability and quadruple redundancy. The F4 was first introduced in 2003 and is currently the most common variant in operational service. The BAF expects it to be fully replaced by the Goshawk F5 by 2030.

Goshawk F5
The Goshawk F5 was Societal's response to a Goshawk F4 replacement. Initially, the BAF planned to develop a new fifth-generation fighter to replace the Goshawk but eventually agreed on Societal's Goshawk F5, which was generally a less expensive and lower-risk venture as compared to developing a new design. Marketed as a 4++ generation fighter, it is the Baumish fighter to be equipped with an active electronically scanned array, a missile approach warning system, imaging infrared search and track, TV camera with infrared search and track capability, and a multimode laser rangefinder with a detection range of 20 km. Radar absorbent material radar cross-section has been reduced to 1 square meter and new electronic warfare systems which can jam or deceive enemy radar systems have helped to increase the F5's survivability. Furthermore, it also has a "supercruise" ability which allows it to maintain at supersonic flight without the help of afterburners. An increased usage of lightweight composites, aluminum-lithium and titanium alloys gives the aircraft a lighter empty weight. Its canards were removed due to it imposing a weight penalty on the aircraft. This change was compensated with further improved thrust vectoring nozzles on both engines, which is now a standard addition on all aircraft. The Goshawk F5 first flew in 2017 and the first deliveries occurred in 2020. The BAF plans to acquire 36 units to replace the Goshawk F4 by 2030. The Mairish Air Force is also considering a purchase of up to 12 aircraft to replace their F4s, although no agreement has been settled on yet.
