Considering AM has 80% pet ownership and a culture that emphasizes on having a Varga (something something spirit animal thing) as sign of transition from childhood to adolescence...is cliques formed in schools or other similar institutions based on the status of one's animal...ummn...realistic?

I mean "boy with rat Varga bullied by Eagle gang" does sound ridiculous but still...

I would imagine it could be realistic for children who have received their Varga to bully kids who have not yet gotten them (much like all other teenage rites of passage).
As for what type, it depends on how one receives it and how it is perceived. Is that rat culturally less important than the Eagle? If the animals are bought by the parents, then there is an extension of classism as the more expensive/exotic Vargas become a symbol of wealth as well. Obviously each of these animals would have some sort of stigma attached to them, much like chinese zodiac, and stereotyping could arise from that.

The Union of Central Communist Republics, (UCCR) formally known as the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance, was a collective defence treaty signed in (Location) among several communist states of the Western Isles after the Imperial War. It was signed in Rustov, Balnik, with Thuzbekistan and Balnik being the founding members. The goal of the treaty was to combine regional communist power against the overwhelming anti-communist forces following the Imperial War. The Treaty served as a military alliance between the signatory members despite the fact that its text read solely as a defensive one. The economic union of the nations mentioned in its preamble ended up mostly being a series of trade deals and promises rather than an actual union. Thus, the UCCR differs from its inspiration in the Warsaw Pact in that all members remained extremely independent of each other, only ever committing to war drills and defensive acts. Ultimately, the UCCR dissolved in 1994 after half of the members had withdrawn (Balnik in 1982, Samudera in 1991) and trust in the UCCR fell decidedly short. In 1994, when the treaty was scheduled to expire, the remaining members simply did not meet to do so. It was officially dissolved on May the 15th, 1994.

History

Formation

The UCCR was formed in 1954 following the destructive Imperial War in order to consolidate Leftist Power in the region after the Imperial War and World War Two brewed up an incredible amount anti-communist feeling. The Balniki Communist Republic proposed the treaty in 1952 just as the provisional Communist Republic in Thuzbekistan was consolidating its power and the leftist Brulafi government was beginning to feel isolated. Both nations accepted and the summit was set to begin in May of 1953 in Rustov, Balnik. From then, it took a year to debate, with each nation desiring different ideas. Balnik, being nationalistically minded, favored a treaty of independence and cooperation. The other powers agreed with this at the time, both needing the assurance of defense from outside threats by a stable power and both wishing to repair their nations after their bloody revolutions. It was signed in Rustov, Balnik, By Thuzbekistan, Brulafi, and Balnik on the 15th of May, 1954.

Through the following years, it gained three more members. In 1955, Vancouvia (then Codman) voted communists into power by a slim majority. They eagerly joined the UCCR later that year, but were only briefly involved as their democratic government threw them out and withdrew officially in 1961. Orsandia also joined in 1955 following three years of reconstruction under the Democratic People's Union and dropped out in 1972 due to internal revolution. Samudera joined in 1965 after a revolution there. From 1965-1972, the UCCR was a six member organization based mostly in the Eterna and Southern Sea. Thus, the organization and the "East" in general was associated with Communism well into the early 2000's, despite the vast majority of nations being some form of capitalist.

Economic and Military Interventions

Throughout its forty year history, the UCCR performed various interventions both economically and militarily. While most of its military interventions failed as it was unwilling to overtly support uprisings, its economic ones fared better. Below is a list of military and economic interventions in Chronological Order:

Thuzbekistan: In 1961, Thuzbekistan began to suffer from a disaster of its own making. Mismanagement had lead to the Famine of 1961. Throughout this famine, which lasted three years, the UCCR provided economic aid in the form of food stuffs and material as the nation rebuilt and reorganized itself to prevent a disaster from occurring again. Because of the intervention, Nationalist uprising did not occur as feared and the UCCR was not granted an early death in one of its founding members.

Negarakita: In the late fifties, Negarakitan communists of the People's Party of Negarakita waged a low level, urban uprising throughout the 1950s after a failed takeover only years before had set them back. With UCCR funding and arming, they used IEDs, car bombs, ambushes, and terrorist tactics to disrupt the capitalist regime. Though a leftist would be elected to power in 1957, Negarakita would not join the UCCR. In order to try and get a more radical government in power, the UCCR supported Constantin Shahir's campaign against the sitting government. Throughout 1958, the PPN fought against the government with UCCR support until Anshlen and Samuderan intervention ended the conflict. The UCCR then withdrew its support for the dying militants.

Samudera: In 1939, the Communist Party of Samudera (PKS) was founded. Despite gaining traction among the populace throughout the WW2 period, internal doctrine issues split the PKS in to the Socialist Party of Samdudera (PSS), a Marxist-Leninist party, and the Communist Struggle Party (PKK), which was Trotskyist. Throughout the 1950s, civil unrest and even the incorporation of Western Samudera was blamed on the Communist parties. The reprisals that resulted from this led to the communist uprising in 1957. The disunited communists fought against a well organized government and army and were quickly defeated. Many communists were executed for treason or exiled, while still others escaped. The Prominent nation exiled individuals would flee to was Linaviar, though others would flee to Thuzbekistan and other UCCR nations. However, in 1961, Samudera launched a doomed campaign against Linaviar which, with support from the UCCR, quickly defeated Samudera in 1962. Three years later, the UCCR supported Lotus Revolution swept through Samudera, finally ousting the oppressive government in 1966. In 1968, Samudera officially joined the UCCR despite undeclared membership from 1965. The next year, a failed international intervention tried to end the communist rule, but the UCCR stopped it by overt threats to the intervening nations and direct military support.

Orsandia: In 1972, Orsandia suddenly erupted in civil war. Anti-communist Rebels funded and armed by the MSTO began their assault across the nation. They almost immediately took the capital and major cities in the East of the nation in the first weeks. The government was able to regroup, though, and launched a UCCR supported counter offensive in the Midlands. The fighting around Orsburgh became the beginning of a long and brutal conflict that raged throughout Orsandia from 1972-1974. The war served to be the first proxy war between the MSTO and the UCCR. In the end, the Democratic People's Union of Orsandia was defeated and a military junta installed. It was the most serious loss the UCCR would take in the years and was only the first of the withdrawals to occur before the UCCR died in 1994.

Structure

From its inception, the United Central Communist Republics had no real structure. However, diplomats from each nation would meet twice a year in Rustov (until 1982) and Ashluv (from 1982 to 1994) to vote on new member additions, discuss cooperation and trade, and to show solidarity with each other. While all nations were considered equal, Balnik and Thuzbekistan were the most dominant forces in the alliance between 1954 and the late 1970s. After 1982, Thuzbekistan was the undeclared leader of the alliance.

CURRENT COLLABORATION NOTES:

IDEAS:

1) Athara's Kaski Wars form a progressive union after an intense civil war between the People's Civic Congress and the other states. It results in a progressive, unified nation dictated by foreign powers. This could be the very first proxy war between the UCCR, MSTO, and Covonant. Starting in 1965, the UCCR could begin sending troops, material, and financial aid to the People's Civic Congress. MSTO and Covonant both become involved, with direct fighting occurring between mostly Orsandian, Thuzbek, and Weinamese troops vs Miklania, Covonant, and Polar Svalbard. In 1976, this prolonged but limited conflict ends with a mediation between the UCCR and MSTO/Covonant.

2) As Athara's war winds down, Mik and company decide its time to hit back. In 1970, they begin training and arming a militant group in Orsandia, which attacks with surprising strength in 1972. As Orsandia is ripped apart, UCCR abilities to support the People's Civic Congress in Athara becomes limited and MSTO/Covonant then have leverage in the 1976 talks. Orsandia leaves the UCCR in 1974 and focuses on rebuilding its nation.

Yes, rare Vargas have higher status than common ones.

The rite of passage is at 12th birthday when the shaman or shamaness gives you a special herb (totally not drugs on kids...probably how Magarati kids can stay for 12 hours at school :P ) to induce visions of the kid's Varga. The kid is then tasked to catch the Varga. By tradition, the Varga is a recently deceased parent or relative or close friend who has reincarnated to become together with the person.

If the kid fails or has no vision of the Varga, the same thing is tried on 13th birthday...if that fails on 14th and 15th and so on.

Since many stupid kids started dying in the past when searching for their Vargas (and some in rural villages still do), the gov now hands them at their 7th Grade through a special examination grading and lottery process .

Social Classes
A TWI Nation Building Writing Prompt

Updated: 7 January 2019

Originally posted in the TWI Nationbuilding Prompt Thread.

[AN: This reply to a November writing prompt is being posted in January. To that, I say: Better late than never!]

1. How is social class perceived in your nation?

The Cosian government loves to highlight the island's diversity in its tourism campaigns, with folks of all colours and creeds laughing together in peace and harmony. The picture they paint isn't actually far from reality, but the average Cosian would be quick to tell you how much of the Layman Island's society can be stratisfied.

Cultural lines are the most visible, where differences in lifestyles can even be found within one ethnic group. Though one's heritage no longer dictates their role in Cosian society, it may still help inform one of their hometown, the language they speak, their preferred cuisine, etc. Economic lines also exist, though besides owning larger stuff, the only thing that really sets the rich apart is the scale at which they can commit poor life choices. Regional lines tie in many elements from the first two, but the divide between coastal Cosie and its inland population are more pronounced compared to the others.

2. Are there legally or religiously established classes? If so, what are they? How are they perceived?

The Cosian government tries to curry favour with almost all sectors of local society; they're not choosy when it comes to extracting people's goodwill. But, as mentioned in a previous prompt, special attention is given to the quoci people, specifically members of the various tribes within the special inland region of Quozco. As the Layman Island's native children (and a major source of tourist revenue), the government has done much to help the tribespeople preserve their way of living, from granting special land rights to awarding them frivolous luxury items.

Most Cosians don't have any strong opinions regarding the special treatment these tribes receive, seeing as most of them don't even interact with the tribespeople on a daily basis. Many buckaroos, Cosie's very own community of cowboy ranchers, do live near the quoci tribes; a lot of them are none too happy to have these "freeloaders" occupying land they think could be used for grazing instead.

3. Are there informal or unofficial, classes? If so, what are they?

Along cultural lines, you could simply define entire ethnic groups as social classes and call it a day. It doesn't actually end there, though; there also exists sub-cultures within a few ethnic groups that can be defined as social classes by themselves. Much like how the aforementioned buckaroos are quite distinct from the larger rioll community's Hispanic roots, the buccaneers, Cosie's long-standing community of pirates, live wildly different lives from others within the Caribbean-influenced windie community.

To put it simply, economic lines separate Cosie's destitute, its working-class, its middle-class, and its high society from each other.

Regional lines split Cosie's population into two distinct types: the "urban" Cosians who live by the coast, and the "rural" Cosians who live further inland.

4. How are these informal classes perceived? Are they hated, or sought after? Why?

Cosie's cultural lines have been blurring with each generation. With the mixed coby population serving as the island's majority, people from different ethnic groups are finding it easier and more worthwhile than ever to hang out with each other. Cultural lines haven't served as a source of tension for a long time (besides the one between quocis and buckaroos).

Along economic lines, most would obviously rather have more money than what they currently have in their piggy bank. With that in mind, the desire to be part of the upper classes (or the resentment against them) isn't that strong in the Cosian population, and nobody's going out of their way to discriminate against people based on their income. Interestingly, many well-off Cosians tend to frequent cafes in the poorer areas of the island.

Regional lines are the biggest barriers dividing a population that already claims itself to be united. Few seasiders would want to associate with the "stuffy bumpkins" from the forests and plains, while the inlanders tend to look down on the coastal folk and their penchant for chaos.

5. What marks distinguish classes in your nation?

One's face would be the most obvious, but not the most accurate, distinguishing factor along cultural lines; it's usually a given for a Cosian Chinese to not have grown up the same way a black windie might have. What language one speaks can help separate a Spanish-speaking rioll from a Francophone padeur, or a white English-speaking windie. The typical outfit of a quoci tribesperson or a buckaroo make them easy to spot among a sea of different Cosians.

You can figure out who's who along Cosie's economic lines by the area they live in or the cars they drive (if they have one). It's not easy to tell wealthy Cosians from a glance, seeing as they wear gaudy clothes just as often as the island's hardcore poor; however, the perfume or cologne they have on can make for a dead give-away to their level of income.

The marks for distinguishing Cosians between regional lines aren't really obvious. Some people simply assume that the average inlander would look tidier, wear simpler clothes, and maybe put on wide-brimmed hats in a public setting.
