I sat next to the waters, waving rhythmically against the stoney shore. The sun rose high in the sky, casting everything in a beautiful orange glow, contrasting the vast greenery around me. I basked in its heat, enjoying every last drop while I could before it disappeared into the horizon. The trees swayed with the whistling wind, and the birds chirped melodies to it in response. One landed in the waters ahead, causing a splash that rippled into the lake.
However, it quickly flew away at the sound of noisy footsteps which were getting louder and louder. Laughter came with, and two young kids ran into view. One pushed the other into the water, splashing everywhere, which got me soaked. They played in the water for hours, pretending to be swamp monsters, catching the flaming orange phoenix catfish, and just generally having fun. To my surprise, one picked me up and threw me across the lake. I bounced and bounced, making it to about the centre before I sank deep down into the blue-green waters. As day turned to afternoon, they skipped so many stones across the water that I wasn't sure there would be any left on the shore. Luckily a dinner bell had sounded, and they scampered off home.
The fish around me finally came out of hiding, once again filling the waters with what I can only describe as a sort of chaotic highway of sea creatures. Beautiful blues and glinting green scales swam past, never ceasing their movement throughout the waves. Jellyfish floated around me, stinging anything in its path. A cluster of cats attempted to swat at a giant isopod crawling through the waters. A giant isopod? What? Oh, nevermind, that wasn't important.
I could no longer bask under the sun, and reasonably, I was quite upset by this. I missed the days when I was human. When I would splash through the waters, and be called by the sound of a bell. When I could whistle like a bird, swaying through the forest with the trees. Those were the days. The days before I was cursed to be just a stone. I'll admit, I might have deserved it a bit. I spent my time sneaking throughout the bustling streets of Hjuin, stealing Oleri out of the pockets of passersby, always finding the trickiest ways to evade their vision: Pretending to accidentally bump into them so their wallets fell, or swapping them out with items of similar weight, Indiana Jones style. It wasn't the most decent way to make a living, but it was mine.
That was until I met this odd wizard. I had gone about the day, stealing Oleri from people, when I saw someone with their back turned in a dark foreboding alleyway. It had looked a bit odd, but I didn't think much of it. Looking back, I really should have. I went about my old shtick of swapping things, but they caught me! There was this bewildered, insane look on their face. I could never forget it. The bags under their eyes were deep, but not as deep as the pits that were the eyes themselves. They hunched over a paper, with a hastily scrawled list on it. It contained names of neighboring nations, along with corresponding animals.
I swore I heard them mutter "animals for the roleplay... animals for the roleplay!", but before I could even process what was happening, they pointed a twisted wooden wand at me, and I was turned into a stone!
They started yelling. "Nobody messes with Doje Kryqu Rykan Wystwnlyq III! Nobody! No cat, no bird, no anglerfish, jellyfish, isopod, and especially no stone! You will never get me. Never!!!!!", they laughed maniacally, and stored me in their pocket before running off.
I was pulled, bounced, and jangled around in their pocket as they sped away. I had no clue what was going on, nor where we were going. It was not until what seemed like hours later that I was finally taken out, and tossed next to a lake. The wizard once again sped away, never to be seen again, at least not be me anyhow.
And that's where I am now. Sunken at the bottom of the lake, surrounded by odd creatures, alone. Afternoon turned to night, and the cicadas screeched in the trees, replacing the singing of the birds. I was sulking in my spot, when I noticed a flashing light above me. Then another, and another, until the whole sky was filled with them. Fireflies! They danced above the waters, and although they were a bit blurry, I could still tell what they were. They looked like blinking stars, scattering the night sky. Honestly, it was beautiful, and I couldn't stay upset for long with the sight above me.
Maybe being a stone was alright? The view was wonderful, and I just couldn't shake the feeling that I wanted to stay here forever. Why not make the best of a bad situation? I settled into my spot, and continued watching everything around me. The ever moving environment could never bore me. I came to terms with with what I had been given, knowing what had happened had happened, whether I liked it or not. No bell nor sun ray could surpass this feeling. It could barely even match it. I knew then in my heart, what I truly had ever wanted, was to be a stone.
