Demoness wrote:Regarding the poll, I think it's unfortunate there is no objective definition of justice. America practices retributive justice, for example, while other nations focus on rehabilitation. When applying that to genocide, there is no true justice. You can arrest and execute people directly responsible for murders, but how do you find justice for the other factors surrounding genocide? People ignore that it happens and fail to intervene. Do you punish them? What about the social or economic factors that contribute?

I suppose what may be needed is "Preventive Justice"? I find it regrettable that the UN is not given greater mandate to prevent genocide around the world. Sadly, the world at present does not have much appetite for international organizations.

I guess I would classify the "Indian Reservations" as more of a stepping stone on the way to genocide. Unless I misunderstood your point and that's what you were getting at...

Interestingly, Adolf Hitler was partially inspired by the US treatment of Native Americans in his own attempt at exterminating the Jews through the use of things like concentration camps.

The other TREES hear it’.

We now have a new poll up, ‘Between justice and genocide there is, in the long run, no middle ground': True or false?, and voting is—as usual—open to EVERYBODY, so feel free to give your opinion @ page=poll/p=150118 : "Bonus points" for the first person to post in Outre Space’s RMB identifying the source of the quotation...

I posted a response on your RMB.

But Hitler left out the gambling casinos and oil royalty payments from his version.

Correct. You win the bonus points.
Now I need to work out what those points can be used for...

Give it that right.
Watch various SC members veto intervention in cases where the guilty are their allies.
Watch attempts to arrange intervention in cases that aren't genuinely 'genocide' but where some other nations dislike the "guilty" ones.
It couldn't work without a totally honest & non-political body in charge of the decisions, and in RL that wouldn't be a possibility...

My vote is for cookies. Any sort will do, as long as the word "chocolate" is involved somewhere.

Yeah, I agree with you. But I still find the state of affairs to be regrettable...

Of course, rather than going through the lengthy, convoluted process of attempting to assemble a "totally honest and non-political body" to be put in charge, we could instead create a body with zero accountability and an absolute mandate to stop any current or future genocide, then invest in them the full powers of an international police force and justice system. What could go wrong? :P

"All genocides have been caused by humans: Therefore the most effective way to prevent future genocides would be to abolish humans".

(Just call this body placed in charge 'the Sentinels'... or 'Ultron'... or 'Skynet'...)

You really don’t want to try any cookies produced in this nation, believe me. How about, next time you’re in Yipmens Donut Shop you can buy a half-dozen donuts for yourself and tell the proprietor that I’ll pay for those when I next visit?

Yes, that is exactly what I had in mind, hah

You're right, this does seem to be a common trope in sci fi and comics. Perhaps The Borg would like to get involved, as well?

You're welcome, six days later :P

Nice flag, I dig it.

I don't have internet access from my lodgings, so normally use the public computers at one or another of the local libraries... but the county's libraries have closed as a precaution (from this morning, with no advance warning) during the Coronavirus problem. I'm at an internet cafe now, but can't use that as much as I did the library, and even if I personally remain healthy presumably they will have to shut as well under emergency regulations sooner or later...
I've just put this nation into vacation mode, and logged into my other nations in this region, to extend their existence just in case.
I hope that you, and anybody about whom you care, remain well.

Understood. Stay safe out there. See you on the other side of all this...

Hello. We have a new poll running in our region. It is about Boronabirus. Why not stop by and give your opinion? There are three days left!

NICE DEFEND

Thanks Defenders! Appreciate the help while our Founder is temporarily CTE.

More visitors! Oh my, where are my manners..? The welcome mat wasn't even lain out.

Our region has certainly become quite popular with the loss of our founder :P

Oh, I realize :) Just being chummy, for lack of anything else able to do. Eventually, our ursine founder will return and make things right again. Until then, we can do naught but wait...

Thank you, and take care of yourselves out there!

Harumph! I feel like I'm always cleaning this welcome mat at our front door, due to all of the visitors we are getting these days...nigh constant, I tell you.

*leaves a goodie basket by the door for the good ones*

Us am not back!

(I won't be able to get online very often, but should at least be able to keep this nation alive again now: Delegates will not have executive authority.)

It was surprisingly active here in your absence.

Here's a collection of concepts for regional banners, derived from "Dune" book covers:

https://imgur.com/a/GlbPHZt

Was pretty fun putting them together and admiring all the various Dune art that is out there :)

I have a folder of saved science fiction cover art from the 70s and 80s, so there's more options other than "Dune"

Nice recommendation of Roger Dean album art for regional banners. Here's a selection of ideas:

Was a lot of fun to explore his artwork, as I wasn't aware of him before.
