Daily Champion: Mamaran Empire (4 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze)

Day Eight brought a slew of new events to Kaohsiung, offering fresh challenges and opportunities to the nations jockeying for command of the medal table. The morning began in familiar fashion, with the final Archery event at Neiweipi Cultural Park. The Formosans ended on a high note with their third archery gold, capping off an already impressive show of bowmanship these games. Within the elegant figure of the Olympic Aquatics Center, the Timmies put forth a striking performance, rocketing to victory in three of the day's four breaststroke competitions. Just across Shiyun Boulevard, the Wagains continued to outperform at Formosa National Stadium, winning both of the 5km events in Athletics.

East of downtown in Fu'an, the debut Badminton event was locked down by a formidable Mamaran roster, despite a strong run from the Malian duet of Michael Opoku Baah and Grace Atipaka. The team sabre competition in Fencing was also carried by the Exalted Empire, behind a strong offense of Italian athletes. By early afternoon, the final holes of men's Golf were being played amidst the bamboo and cypress stands of Taoyuan's Ta Shee Country Club. Though the Timmians were heavily favored heading into the tournament, it was the Orsonian heavyweight Bair Samuel who walked away with gold. The Artistic Gymnastics discipline began with the popular all-around competition, pairing the world's elite against each other in a six-event medley. The Lucijians once again defended their dominance in the sport, triumphing in both the men's and women's categories.

The first team event in Judo was also the program's last, as the narrow victory of the Mamaran team settled once and for all its stubborn back-and-forth with the Lucijans. At the historic retreat of Sizihwan, in the shadow of Mount Gushan and National Sun Yat-sen University, the first pairings of Sailing saw windsurfers dodge between coral reefs in the warm waters of the South China Sea. The afternoon belonged to the Cybusians and Wagains, whose athletes had a long maritime heritage to look back on from the top of the podium. Teo Shun Xie of Singapore made a strong showing in pistol Shooting, breaking for a moment the duopoly of Malian and Orsonian marksmen. The evening closed under the floodlights of the brand-new Qiaotou International Tennis Centre, with the Czech-Polish pair of Barbora Strycova and Lukasz Kubot defending their world no. 1 ranking with a first-place Cybusian finish in mixed doubles.

As always, excellent work with the Olmpics Novo! The Mamarans are doing very well for themselves, but that makes sense; when your country is on the line, being invaded, one might want to show the world that the Mamarans aren't down for the count, they aren't defeated, but rather they will emerge triumphant, and that their athletes will bring home medals to a nation that is rebuilding instead of fighting for it's life.

The Orson Empire wrote:Jerick Pallas Pardoned:

In an unprecedented move, Prime Minister Javand has once again used his executive authority to issue an Imperial Pardon for Jerick Pallas, the Paramount Leader of the Federalist Movement.

The prominent revolutionary has been a fugitive of the Empire since 2006. Prior to this, he had been retired from politics for six years, after spending ten years as an Imperial Senator. Pallas was implicated in the 7/7 coup attempt, during which he collaborated with fellow Constitutionals and Liberalists to depose Emperor Turner and the Aturorists from power. After the failure of the coup, Pallas and his family members fled Orson in a shipping crate, narrowly avoid being executed by the Inquisition. They arrived in Buenos Aires, Wagondia, where Pallas was successfully granted asylum and Wagain citizenship. From this point on, he became an official member of the Federalist movement, dedicating his life to removing Turner from power at all costs and destroying the Empire. In 2011, after much of the movement's leadership were killed in numerous Imperial raids, Pallas maneuvered to take full control over the Federalists, establishing himself as the Paramount Leader.

In 2013, the Imperial Court of Southern New Guinea formally convicted Pallas in absentia after Imperial agents discovered his role within the movement, charging him on counts of treason, terrorism, mass murder, illegal smuggling, and robbery; he was sentenced to death. In 2018, MOSS agents came very close to assassinating Pallas as apart of Operation Scinfaxi, the full-scale purge of the Federalists; he narrowly escaped, fleeing Wagondia and hiding in Svalbard, Norway. Pallas re-emerged in public life two years later, after Emperor Turner called off the hunt. The Wagain government granted Pallas a residence at the Fazenda Montenegro outside Santa Catalina for his own protection, where he currently lives. Pallas was the number-one most wanted criminal on Orson for the past decade, and was at the top of the National Terrorist Database. The entirety of the Orsonian Intelligence Community attempted several operations to either capture or kill Pallas, with the 2018 one coming the closest. At one point, the Imperial government issued a 5,000,000 Kirahe reward for any information leading to his arrest, the highest such reward in Orsonian history.

Under the pardon, Pallas will be removed from the NTB, while MOSS, the National Inquisitorial Force and all other police agencies will be prohibited from arresting him based on past charges. He will be allowed to return to Orson and take up residence in the country if he wishes. Finally, his old Imperial pension, granted to all former politicians, will be restored alongside back-pay for all years it was suspended.

Javand states that his goal of the pardon is "national healing", as he wants the nation to move on from the Federalist insurgency that has raged for decades. Additionally, many members of the new government (particularly the opposition) sympathize with Pallas's goals of democracy and liberty, recognizing that he was fighting against an unjust and tyrannical system. Javand himself always had a positive view of Pallas, recognizing his bravery in trying to stop Turner early on before he gained absolute power. The pardon has made national news, and was met with mixed feelings across Orson. While there are many people who see Pallas as a hero, others see him as a bloodthirsty terrorist or radical revolutionary who would stop at nothing to achieve his vision. There was some criticism from within the Conservative Party, with some fearing that pardoning a figure with such notoriety might be too polarizing.

Upon hearing the news, Pallas initially did not believe it, brushing it off as yet another ploy by the Imperials. After Javand personally called Pallas to speak about the pardon, he finally took it seriously. Members of the press arrived at the Fazenda Montenegro to film Pallas's reactions, and he gave them a very short statement. The normally stoic and serious revolutionary had tears in his eyes and his voice wavered while speaking, indicating this was a very emotional moment for him. For the past 15 years, he had been an exile of his nation, constantly living in fear for his life and his family's safety. Now, it was all finally over. Pallas announced his gratitude to Javand, and a eventual plan to visit his hometown of Aturo, New Guinea after so many years away.

The Imperial government is shocked by this, but it is believed that this represents another positive step forward for Javand and the Orsonian Empire; the ending of the Mandate and Pallas’ pardon are excellent moves to begin reconciling the Orsonians with the international community and promoting internal harmony.

Thank you Cybus! I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how competitive they’ve been; it’s certainly been a tight race to the top.

I also finally received my first vaccine! Even though it’s months behind the rest of y’all it feels good to have some protection.

Congratulations! I got the J&J vaccine, so it was just one shot for me, though I did feel feverish afterwards.

The Orson Empire wrote:Interesting Oceara. This reminds me of something I'd been meaning to ask you: what was Mali like before the end of WWI, when revolution took hold?

It was a heavily corrupt militarized police state, a continuation of the rule of the Court of the Mansa after their coup against the Keita Dynasty in 1800. They rigged elections, and used bellicose, abusive rhetoric to manipulate the populace to support them as the only ones to defend the country against the European Colonial Powers like France and Britain, they also had a highly militarized police that even had armored cars complete with machineguns (Although their machineguns were made for pistol ammo rather than rifle ammo) they labeled their opponents as treasonous elements that sought to aid the Colonizers in conquering the Confederation.

They used this justification of treason to attempt to exterminate the entire membership of the Party for Pure Democracy in 1914, but the PPD destroyed their member rolls and scattered -- the nonexistent intelligence apparatus of the IMC Government unable to track the PPD's members.. Which ended up being caught up in conscription and having a presence in the army.

They would also start cracking down violently on journalists in the war -- provoking the Society of the Toucouleur to work with the PPD in removing the IMC Regime from power acting as the Public Relations agents and Diplomats for the Revolutionaries -- working to get Entente support through their Wagain ties for the revolution.

Protests would be brutally put down with military-grade force from the IMC Regime's police, and the country by 1917 was a total dictatorship that would no longer be holding it's meaningless rigged elections and was teetering on the edge of collapse as their violent tactics for suppressing dissidents only empowered the rage against the regime. It was only the war keeping the IMC Government intact till 1918 when the IMC government was forced to surrender.

Before 1900 the IMC Government would try to avoid violent clashes and was very image conscious, seeking to keep up the illusion of a democracy however they could.. However the Pro-democracy elements would not relent in uncovering the truth of the suspicious circumstances that the control of the government would pass between the same few families from the Mansa's court before the Coup. This lead to great desperation by the government to stay in power, starting a rapid descent into WWI and in putting down dissenters with force before they could sway enough of the populace to depose the regime.

Very interesting Oceara! The PPD is a left-wing group, yes? I seem to remember you mentioning they reined in their ideology to avoid incurring Cybusian wrath in the aftermath of the Spartakist rebellion being crushed (in new canon this effort would have still been done by the Freikorps, albeit with the help of the Kosarek family, instead of the Cybusian government, since new canon moves the Imperial arrival to late 1945).
That above tangent aside, that’s quite interesting. I had pictured something much less corrupt, for some reason.

The PPD are communists which wholly reject the concept of dictatorship of the proletariat, on the firm belief that dictatorships are almost never willingly temporary and as such to achieve the goal of Pure Democracy -- that Pure Democracy must be directly pursued.

They value the democracy higher than other leftist policy, and believe that the only just way to institute leftist policies is through the manifest will of the people in a directly democratic vote. In the modern day, the PPD includes a wide variety of ideologies in it's membership, all unified by their belief in having the Electorate directly wield constitutional authority in their votes. There are even electoral Monarchists among the PPD's number, with the Keitas backing the PPD over the Conservative party. The PPD in the modern day is more or less an extremely pro-democracy democratic socialist party, although they do not have any fundamental problems with more extensive leftist policy goals.. Just that what's been passed has largely been enough to keep most people content so there's not as much drive to push too much more left but they will generally vote in favor of a push to the left if such is organized.

The Conservatives are the opposite, and opposed to the PPD's revolution in 1918 and seek to reverse that fundamental change of giving the Electorate the sole authority to change the constitution. They also have a wide coalition of ideologies, and the anti-democratic sentiments of the party have decayed over time as the defeat of the Axis in WW2 has reinforced the parts of the party which simply seek conservative economic policy with trade-focused foreign policy. The conservatives only managed to get into power specifically because the anti-democratic sentiments weakened and this shift towards trade focused foreign policy as their main policy objectives, which resonates with many exhausted with the wars both hot and cold provoked by the PPD's Active involvement in Geopolitics. However, those anti-democratic sentiments remain with some in the party and they still lead to a fair level of distrust with the whole party among the majority of the population as some fear that Fascists may one day sway the conservative base and take control of the party which would surely lead to disaster for the country.

Cybusian Bathing Culture:
The Cybusian people have always had a strong history of bathing. It might surprise people to learn that a viral species has an affinity for bathing, but exterior Blacklight biomass is essentially impervious to water.
Since the Rakovsky dynasty, Cybusians have had a fondness for ritualized bathing. Pyotr Rakovsky, to try to demonstrate his commitment to the people via public works, created a series of large public bathing facilities, luxurious and extravagant in the foothills and mountains of Varykino and on the various islands in the Nhokotral and Cytroxian Oceans. Each bathhouse, or banyak, consisted a beautiful series of buildings, gardens, and Mercerist temples, drawing their water from springs or the ocean. One particularly famous banyak in Varykino, Voronezhy, is fed almost directly by a waterfall, the facility being just below the waterfall, water being drawn from the river to supply the buildings on either side of the river (elements of the banyak are built over the river as well).
These facilities had large swimming pools, and then individual hot and cold bath and shower cells, hot steam rooms, and corridors of cool mists. One would take a cool bath, plunging into the cool bath, the cold sharpening the senses. After being anointed with oils, scrubs, salts, and other such things, they then proceed to the more relaxing hot bath for a time. After a brief shower to remove any more oils and salts, the bather would proceed through a cooling corridor of mists to cool themselves down. Afterwards, they would enter a small steam chamber to sweat and supposedly sweat out impure biomass (this is not actually the case). From there, they proceed back to the cool mist corridor and then back to another hot bath, this time without any oils, just hot water to relax in. To cool off, the bather then returns to the cool mist corridor and a brief cool shower before clothing themselves and proceeding to the gardens and temples which accompanied such public baths: banyaks located on islands or the shore tended to have access to the beaches or shore walkways, while mountainside bathhouses offered stunning vistas. Due to the length of the bathing process, the bather would be advised to indulge in hot or cold drinks, bring a book or listen to the music or poetry being played or recited, or talk with other patrons. Spa treatments (ranging from things like a massage all the way to the exotic like soaking in radium water) were also available at most banyaks, as were food, drink, and accommodations. These public baths proved immediately popular and Alexander decided not to close them down after assuming power.
Since then, traditional Cybusian banyaks have expanded across the Empire and beyond. Noble alcazars tend to have smaller versions of a banyak for the use of the family and servants, and the Imperial Palace itself is home to a very luxurious banyak centered around a vast indoor swimming pool. Every Mercerist ermitzha tends to have a small-scale version of a banyak for the monks to use.
Even less formal bathing is heavily ritualized: it is not uncommon for a Cybusian to first shower to clean themselves, take a soak in a hot bath after applying oils and such to relax with a glass of wine, tea, or a book, and then briefly shower again to remove remaining oils, then briefly soak in “plain” hot water again; a shorter version of the banyak routine without steam. Cybusian bathrooms tend to have large and ornate bathtubs and showers, combining both form and function.

Inspired by Roman baths, Finnish saunas, Russian banyas, and Victorian-era spa culture. Thoughts? I know it’s slightly odd to elaborate on bathing habits, but I think it helps flesh out Cybusian culture a bit.

Great work on both posts, Cybus! Interesting to see a new faction added to the universe. Also, Alex's rampage makes it clear that he is still capable of being a terrifying force when necessary, but also shows a level of humanity compared to his past self (such as sparing non-combatant and imprisoning Isaak rather than executing him).

Oceara wrote:It was a heavily corrupt militarized police state, a continuation of the rule of the Court of the Mansa after their coup against the Keita Dynasty in 1800...

Great work on this Oceara! It seems like Mali and Orson were in opposite positions in this time period compared to the Third World War. The IMC was a totalitarian police state while Orson was a free democracy. Like Cybus said, history may not repeat exactly the same way, but it certainly does rhyme.

Though, I do wonder if the Constitutional Revolution in Orson had an influence on the Society of Toucouleur. After the Constitutionals overthrew the absolute monarchy in 1806, they established the most liberal regime in world history up to that point. Slavery and serfdom were banned, while Orsonians and humans were guaranteed equal rights. All citizens over the age of 18 had the right to vote regardless of their status or identity, making Orson the first nation to grant universal suffrage. The Constitutionals would be seeking to spread their vision of democracy worldwide during this time, and I could see them launching filibusters into the Spanish colonial empire and aiding in the Latin American Wars of Independence. They could also work to undermine the IMC and rally pro-democracy elements in Mali.

Kosarek Trading Company:
The Kosarek Trading Company, also known as Kosarek Handelsgesellschaft, is one of the largest shipping companies on the planet, and has been existence in some form or another since the late 1500s. The company provides a wide variety of shipping options, from conventional shipping or air freight, to luxurious airships and ocean liners.
As the Hanseatic League faltered and was replaced by the more coordinated and better organized network of Cybusian controlled city-states in what is now Germany, they began to cut off trade between the city-states and the rest of Germany. In response, the Kosarek’s, the family who demonstrated the greatest skill at negotiating and handling outsiders delicately, decided to form their own group, a network of merchants operating under their control. These merchants initially only operated between the city-states like Hamburg, Konigsburg, Kiel, etc, but slowly began to expand across the Baltic to conduct trade with Denmark and Scandinavian countries, as well as Russia after the creation of St. Petersburg in 1703. In 1634, the Kosarek Trading Company was officially founded in Konigsburg, inspired by the British East India Company. The company traded throughout northern, eastern, and central Europe, operating both highly secure land trade routes and trading ships of all sizes, gradually expanding outward to the Netherlands, Great Britain, the New World, Africa, and the Far East. The superior engineering skills of the Kosareks meant that even their sailing vessels were faster than their British and Dutch and Spanish counterparts, while still hauling large amounts of exotic cargo. The company notably never engaged in the slave trade, but quickly established itself as a formidable rival to the British, Dutch, and Spanish trading fleets, despite being smaller and without the backing of a massive empire. The company helped spread the Cybusian diaspora across the world and spread Mercerism worldwide. Notably, the Kosarek fleet was very impartial with whom they traded; they supplied the American revolutionaries, supplied the Confederates during the American Civil War, but were quick to cut off support for the French revolutionaries, hating their ideology and lending their support to surviving monarchists (they later fought against Napolean’s fleet at sea when the city-states were threatened).
By the dawn of the 19th century, the Kosareks were early adopters of steel-hulled ships, quickly developing an all-steam fleet crafted by the master shipwrights of the Cybusian city-states, and created a network of luxurious and fast ocean liners connecting the Cybusian city-states and later the German Empire to exotic locales and world cities like NYC, rivaling such firms as Cunard and the White Star Line with their speed and sheer luxury. The KTC fleet also provided fast transport of bulk goods and commodities around the world, mostly between Kosarek family affiliates and investments; the Kosarek fleet bringing in Cybusian expertise and machinery fueled the industrialization of the Wagain Empire just as much as domestic resources and talent did.
1914 saw the fortunes of KTC take a turn; many of the beautiful liners were interned in ports and scrapped or seized, although the Konigsburg (one of the fastest ocean liners afloat at the time) saw success as a commerce raider; leading Allied warships on a hunt throughout the South American coast until 1915 and sinking 15 enemy vessels and capturing 5 more before managing to make a ‘miracle run’ back to Germany. Kosarek freighters saw similar success as commerce raiders; the SMS Mowe, the most successful German commerce raider in the war (capturing or sinking a total of 40 vessels) was a former Kosarek freighter. However, when the war ended with German defeat, a substantial portion of the Kosarek fleet was seized.
Undeterred, the Kosarek’s set about rebuilding their trading empire. The Konigsburg had managed to narrowly avoid being seized, and, after undergoing renovations, it served as the flagship of a new fleet of Kosarek liners; resplendently Art Deco vessels which were more like floating palaces than vessels. Quickly realizing the potential of air travel, KTC invested heavily into aviation and soon a fleet of flying boats ferried passengers and mail around the world, while land-based aircraft connected Europe. In 1921, the newly-created Kosarek Luftschifflinien (Kosarek Airship Lines, or KLL) launched it’s first airship, and soon there was a fleet of no less than 5 Kosarek airships competing with DELAG on routes serving Weimar Germany, continental Europe, Imperial Russia, the Mamaran Empire, the Wagain Empire, and the United States; more routes than DELAG at the cost of having no access to Count von Zeppelin’s expertise. The Kosarek airships competed directly with the Hindenburg and Graf Zeppelin and managed to ensure airship travel survived the Hindenburg disaster - which the Kosarek's chalked up to a freak accident.
The 1920s, while initially believed to be a dismal decade for German companies in the wake of the war and the devastating influenza pandemic, turned out to be an excellent decade for KTC. Kosarek liners and freighters connected ports around the world, flying boats and airplanes offered faster service and connections to inland locations, while KLL airships offered the luxury and Art Deco style of one of the companies liners at twice the speed.
The company was not hit quite as hard by the Great Depression as other companies, but it was still a shock to the company. Thanks to the diversification in the 1920s, the company had multiple sources of income, but suffered a blow to it’s prestige when the Konigsburg collided with a smaller vessel, completely obliterating it and killing all 8 people aboard the small vessel. When Hitler rose to power, given the Kosarek’s disdain for the “Austrian egomaniac” as Pyotr Kosarek referred to him, KTC and KLL refused to fly the swastika, and tried to remain independent of Nazi interference. Given the fact that a single Kosarek was capable of killing the entire Nazi high command with ease, Hitler -with much reluctance- was forced to accept only a small faction of the Kosarek shipping capacity being offered for use, at extremely high prices. The company survived several nationalization proposals -again, likely because of the fact that the Evolved could effortlessly kill every member of the Nazi high command should they attempt to press their luck too far- and emerged from the war battered; a large amount of the fleet had been sunken, and the entire airship fleet had been seized by the Nazi’s and later scrapped to build fighters from the materials as the war became increasingly desperate.
Following the Cybusian occupation, KTC resumed services, rebuilding their fleet and resuming services to the former German colonies now under Cybusian leadership. The Konigsburg was retired in 1955, but was kept on as a museum ship at the harbor for which it is named. The Kosarek fleet now operates 110 ocean liners or cruise vessels on routes around the world, 1,150 cargo vessels, over 1,200 aircraft, and 80 airships (45 cargo airships, 20 passenger and cargo airships, 15 passenger only) on routes all around the planet. These include conventional aircraft, flying boats, and luxurious airships and ocean liners, all highly luxurious and speedy.
Astonishingly, they have managed to avoid being crushed by Taggart Trans-Imperial, and KTC is trying to expand to operate in space and become a serious rival to Taggart.

Thoughts?

This is very interesting, Cybus! I always enjoy seeing what new companies you can come up with; they are all so fascinating in various ways - whether it's about their history to how they operate, it's all good to me.

Agreed. The history of the Kosareks in Germany is very fascinating. It is also interesting how they managed to avoid domination by the Nazis. I also imagine that the Kosareks might have been trading extensively with Orson in the early days, seeing as their ships were faster than foreign counterparts and there was a European rush to trade with India and China (both dominates by Orson at the time).

I had considered that, but I figured the Free Thought Orsonians would ardently and violently oppose contact with the Kosarek family, who were both Evolved and Mercerist, or their merchants who also tended to be Mercerists or Christians from the Cybusian city-states.

Anti-Cybusian sentiment in Orson is a modern concept, coming to fruition after the Second World War (when the Cybusian Empire returned to Earth in full-force and annexed Germany). Before this, there would have been far less hostility. In the past, Orsonians believed that they were a separate "race" of humans, as it was impossible for an Orsonian to have offspring with a human. By the mid-19th century, it was scientifically proven that Orsonians were totally unrelated to all life on Earth, being of extraterrestrial origin. However, there were still many theories on where exactly Orsonians came from. The Kosareks and other Cybusians on Earth were also known to be unrelated to humans, but their origin story of coming off a ship from outer space was disregarded as mythological. Orsonian archaeologists managed to finally decipher ancient archives in Australia which told tales of a great war between the Orsonians and Cybusians, while also revealing records dating back to the Rebellion era- thus, a prominent theory developed stating that Orsonians were created by Cybusians and served as slaves in ancient times. It wasn't until after the 1940's that this was fully confirmed as fact.

Foreign merchants were allowed to operate in Orson. The British, French, Dutch, Spanish, and Portuguese were allowed to establish small trading outposts across the Empire, in exchange for regular rent and compliance with Imperial law, and the same would be true for the Kosareks. Foreigners had strict limits on the numbers of soldiers, warships, arms and munitions they could station or stockpile in their outposts, and they were allowed to practice their religions solely within the outposts; missionary activity was absolutely prohibited, and would result in the entire outpost being destroyed if discovered. Finally, foreigners were generally prevented from travelling outside their outposts unless on official business, and Imperial soldiers monitored their movements during said business. The Orsonian Emperors tolerated the presence of foreigners since trade with Europe and the New World was highly valuable (the spice trade was especially lucrative as the Orsonians controlled the Spice Islands in Indonesia, where nutmeg, mace, and cloves were exclusively found), but control over India was harsh to prevent the foreigners from gaining too much influence and threatening Orsonian hegemony. As such, it was impossible for the British to take over the subcontinent as they did in RL. Any deviance from the law would immediately see them kicked out and permanently banned from Orson.

This is some very interesting background material, Orson. The Empire would surely have had much to gain from the spice trade in the early modern period, and likely would have been among the wealthiest states on earth. I think an easy parallel would be the Mughals, who like the Orsonians practiced relative cultural tolerance, and, despite often being at war, profited enough from good commercial relations that they could invest in forms of proto-industrialization. I would have little trouble believing the EOA's Industrial Revolution started in Bengal rather than Lancashire, or at least emerged independently in each region. You should also look into some of the administrative innovations of the Mughals, who managed to centralize a highly fractured subcontinent through careful patronage networks, strategic garrisons, and heavy investment in infrastructure.

I think the harsh penalties for missionary activity makes sense given the history of anti-religious sentiment in the empire, though I imagine it would be a major obstacle to warmer relations with the West. Of course, given how lucrative the Orsonian trade would be, commerce would still find a way to flourish, but I could see the Orsonian world becoming a sort of orientalized, mythical 'other' in the minds of many outsiders. The empire's harsh suppression of Catholicism would help to explain why 19th century Wagains felt a much stronger affinity with the Malians (look at the Society of the Toucouleur) than the Orsonians, despite the latter being a prosperous, democratic society also pitted against the old regime of Europe.

Tremendous work on these most recent posts, Cybus; you've really been on a hot streak! I love the attention to detail in this most recent bulletin, and can easily see the Kosarek Trading Company becoming a political and economic juggernaut on the scale of the Dutch or British East India Company. I actually think its decision to remain impartial in global affairs, and thus unbound by most treaties and unencumbered by risky colonial ventures, would be a winning strategy in the long term, allowing the company to survive into the modern day.

I hope you guys don't mind, but I'm going to post my descriptions of the Falcon 2 and CamSpy on the rmb so that I can have something to link to for my "Businesses" factbook.

If you're looking for a place to store a short sub-article, I would recommend creating a number of dispatches and then hyperlinking them back to your central factbook. Unlike factbooks, you can theoretically have an infinite number of dispatches, and I've found them useful in the past for offloading especially wordy or non-essential sections. Though of course I would hope you would share what you've created regardless!

The Carrington M2021, more commonly referred to as the Falcon 2, is a semi-automatic pistol manufactured by the Carrington Institute, a subsidiary of Carrington Industries, that was based on the design of the Colt 1911 (first produced in 1911 by the American firearms manufacturer Colt's Manufacturing Company). The weapon was first introduced in early 2021 as the successor of the Institute's M2017 Falcon, serving as the standard issue sidearm of the Institute's security forces, the Covert Action Staff (CAS), after outperforming the Falcon throughout various field tests carried out both domestically and internationally the previous year. Despite outperforming the Falcon, the Falcon 2 still retains most of the disadvantages one would expect a weapon of its caliber to have when compared to that of the Falcon (such as ammunition being more expensive and having a slower firing rate). The decision to base the Falcon 2 on the Colt 1911 rather than the Glock 17L, like its predecessor, was made as a result of the CAS requesting the Institute's gunsmiths to design a sidearm with greater stopping power than the Falcon within a short period of time. To meet such a deadline, the gunsmiths used the Type 51 Pistol (a domestically-produced M1911A1) utilized by the Formosan Armed Forces as the template for their new weapon, finalizing the design of the Falcon 2 by the end of 2020. Following its adoption into CAS service, the Falcon 2 was marketed to the public at a retail price of NT$23,779 (≈$851 USD), with its higher price (compared to that of the Falcon) reflecting the quality of the weapon and the amount of care put into making each individual pistol. To some, the Falcon 2 is considered to be a spiritual successor of sorts to the Republic's T56 Pistol, though some also consider it to simply be another variant of the original Falcon (despite the differences in design and caliber).

Since its release, there has only been a single model made available for sale through local vendors and directly through the company itself. The factory model, which has been designed to be easy to disassemble for repairs, is a simple semi-automatic sidearm that is available in a stainless steel finish and contains rubberized inserts within the grip (similarly to its predecessor). It is chambered for .45 ACP rounds of ammunition and can be fitted with a detachable laser sight, suppressor, and a 2x zoom scope that allows for greater performance (such as increased accuracy and reduced acoustic intensity and recoil) on the field. Although not as compact as the Falcon, the Falcon 2 is generally considered to be more accurate than its predecessor and just as useful at close ranges despite having a smaller magazine capacity. Due to a failed operation involving the infiltration of a dataDyne warehouse suspected to be harboring illegally acquired nuclear material in 2020, the dataDyne Corporation traced the Falcon of a deceased CAS Operative back to the Carrington Institute, further stressing the relations between the two organizations at a time where either could openly invade the other without consequence. It is because of this incident that the CAS no longer embeds their logo into their weapons, realizing that should one of their operatives be lost on the field, it would be best to have their weapons resemble those used by civilians and other security forces so as to not raise suspicion regarding their involvement. The widespread availability of the Falcon 2 since its release has led to countless organizations within the Republic to use it for self-defense, even seeing use by the Institute's rivals (such as the dataDyne Corporation, which many would assume would refuse to use the weapons of a rival company). The weapon was used the most by the CAS in 2023 following the rise is suspicious activity from dataDyne, the most since before the two organizations were at war with one another in early 2020, where all of its operatives were deployed to infiltrate multiple dataDyne facilities before the two organizations were at war with one another once again (albeit on a smaller scale).

Ah! Yes, I forgot about the downgrading/loss of knowledge, and mistakenly thought the Orsonians of the time still knew of the Cybusians being their ancient masters.
Hmm, that’s an interesting and effective policy. The Kosarek family would definitely be interested in the spice trade and such, and acquiring silk and other goods from China and India; the only other source they’d get would be during the great Russian conquests of Central Asian citiy-states like Bokhara and Samerkand, where the Kosarek’s helped the Tsar’s forces conquer them in exchange for unrestricted access to the markets and resources.

They weren’t totally impartial: being ardent monarchists, they despised the French Revolution and they fought Napoleon when it became clear his men would pose a threat to the Cybusian city-states, but otherwise yes, they traded with pretty much anyone and everyone. Of course, since the 1940s, they are more discerning in who they offer their services to.
And thank you, I have indeed been on a “hot streak” lately.

I could do that, but I feel like these descriptions would be too short to warrant the creation of a new dispatch, each and every time...but then again, if I manage to make new descriptions for all of my weapons in my "Weapons" factbook and update it - I could potentially leave anchors in the name of each gun and link to those in the future.

Appreciate it Novo! The historical prosperity of the Mughal Empire is indeed an inspiration, and I could see the Orsonians being the richest nation in the world for centuries. The Mughal's alone controlled 25% of the world economy in 1700, and combined with our ownership over half of China, Orsonian dominance over the world economy could be comparable to the US in the few decades after WW2, when it was the only industrialized nations that hadn't been utterly scarred by the conflict. It would be a massive source of envy for the European powers, but there was little they could do- the Empire was simply too powerful.

That being said, I could still see Britain beating the Orsonians to the Industrial Revolution, if only by a few years. Before the 19th century, the Orsonian economy was heavily dependent on free labor from the enslaved human population. For example, in 1800, 80% of India's population were either slaves or serfs. After 1806, both slavery and serfdom were banned, providing the real impetus needed for merchants to look towards industrialization.

Thanks! On the topic of the Falcon 2: With the weapon being available for sale in 2021, I'm pretty sure that the Institute would advertise the weapon while the Olympics are taking place; unfortunately, I don't know how to go about making a post for the occasion, so this is the best I have for mentioning that the company would be advertising it.
