ONE month on from the devastating terrorist attack against VSEA-1, which saw foreign traffic into the Vescopan system temporarily halted after the primary gateway through the Eotu was disabled by an explosive device, Republic Special Investigators (RSI) have revealed more information about the group responsible for one of the destructive attacks in the system since the Great Global War.
"The so-called 'People's Republic of Vescopa' claims a heritage that dates back to the old Vescopan nationstates, more than two centuries ago," Special Investigator Hescarl Turansi informed the Vescopan Times during a press conference this morning. "In an almost cult-like fashion, they believe themselves to be fighting on the behalf of conquered peoples, as the legal inheritors of those ancient governments.
"Most members sport tattoos of ancient nationalistic imagery, such as the nations of Lesgaro, the Autocracy of Vaal, and Choonas," Turansi added.
"These ancient nations represented a grave threat to the peace and security of our world, nearly caused the extinction of our very species, and it is only through the unity and dedication of the United Republic of Vescopa that they were defeated, for the good of us all. The rise of these nationalistic cults is very concerning."
The system of nationstates - which were geographically-limited governments which once ruled over limited areas and ethnicities of Vescopa and her colonies - ruled over the homeworld for most of recorded history. The Great Global War - which, despite its name, was waged as violently in space as it was on Vescopa - ultimately brought an end to the nationstate system, as the United Republic emerged victorious over the various genocidal autocracies that once reigned supreme, and used its victory to unite the planet in peace, prosperity, and unity, which we all continue to enjoy to this day. For numerous decades after the Great Global War, holdouts from the Old Nations persisted, though their disruptive influences were eventually quelled.
Until today, it was thought that the Old Nations had been consigned to history.
"Vaalites are the most vocal members of the so-called People's Republic of Vescopa," Lesgaro explained. "Vaal was the most powerful and populous nationstate before peace, so this is perhaps unsurprising. But more than the other cultists, they have established themselves and formulated a list of grievances. For instance, they claim that the United Republic has failed to honour their traditions, even though, as history clearly shows us, those traditions were Vescopan sacrifices, cannibalism, and incest.
"They claim that these are falsehoods designed to demonise them, but the mass graves discovered last week would seem to suggest otherwise.
"These people will not be happy until our peaceful system is plunged back into the inter-nation rivalry that nearly destroyed it in the first place."
Yesterday, Commander Feron, Commanding Officer Maelrosica, a prominent VDS-07 Warship, was relieved of duty after accusations that he was a supporter of the Vaalist faction of the so-called People's Republic of Vescopa. According to Naval Command, all commanders are currently under investigation. An anonymous source informed The Times that Naval Command is concerned that more than 50% of their senior officers have voiced 'sympathies' for the so-called 'People's Republic of Vescopa'.
RSI is encouraging members of the public to report any and all suspicious behaviour, imagery, and iconography.
"The Great Global War was a triumph of justice," Turansi said. "Let's not throw it all away with complacency. We need to act, and we need to act now."
