COAU BKB Season Recap (WIP)

COAU Men's Basketball Season Recap

This season marked the 72nd in the history of COAU college basketball, and it saw the Loyola Marymount Lions win their third national championship over the North Point Midshipmen. Tournament MOP and National Player of the Year Jeff Fryer, an LMU guard, averaged a record 36.8 points per game in the postseason. Midshipmen guard Craig Davis set a record while averaging 17.1 assists per game in the regular season. This is a recap of the regular season and postseason, with individual and team statistics, plus the All-Ancient teams and various awards.

Notable Occurrences

  • November 12 - #7 LMU defeats #2 South Door 118-91 in the North Point Classic, the first win against a top two team in LMU history.

  • November 14 - Rockford's Dennis Scott has 32 points, 12 rebounds, and 14 assists in a 95-81 win over NPIT. It's Scott's seventh career triple-double, breaking Rockford's career record.

  • November 20 - Skip Pennings poured in 41 points, 27 in the second half, to lead #17 Grand Valley in an overtime win over #21 New London. The performance was the first 40 point game by a freshman in Big 8 conference history.

  • November 24 - Jeff Fryer and 7'3" Jeff McNaughton combine for a record 77 points (Fryer 42, McNaughton 35) in LMU's rout of Houston A&M 135-102.

  • December 2 - Jalen Jones and unranked St. Thomas pulled of a shocking 87-71 victory over #6 Anderson. Jones led the Bluejays on a 21-3 run late in the second half to pull away.

  • December 2 - #8 North Point defeats #3 LMU in go away fashion in front of its home crowd, 121-111. Craig Davis' 18 assists are the most in the COAU at that point in the season.

  • December 18 - Union Bay uses its stifling defense and slow down pace to crush overmatched DeJohn 56-28. DeJohn's point total is the lowest in COAU history.

  • January 2 - LMU head coach David Westhead announces he will coach the USAW national team for the upcoming Basketball World Cup. It will be Westhead's second straight appearance on the sidelines for USAW

  • January 11 - Union Bay's 6'9" monster Jonathan Bishop records a triple double with 24 points, 17 rebounds, and 10 blocks in a 65-42 triumph in non conference play. It's the third triple double with blocks in Bishop's career, tying him with Jeff McNaughton for most all-time.

  • January 17 - Craig Davis turned in the most unselfish game in COAU history, dishing out 22 assists and scoring 21 points. Davis breaks his own record of 20 dimes, which he set two seasons ago.

  • Febuary 23 - Both Jeff Fryer and Colin Carter hit 14 three pointers, but Fryer's #4 LMU tops Carter's unranked UT Central 101-98. The game marks the first time two players, regardless of team, made 12 or more threes.

  • Febuary 29 - James Augmon, averaging 21.3 points and 12.8 rebounds, announces he will play for USAW in the BWC this year. Craig Davis also announced he would play later the same day.

  • March 4 - Maurice Baylor, a freshman guard for LMU, scores 38 points in a West Coast Conference tournament win, the most by a freshman in a postseason tournament in 17 years.

  • March 11 - Teams ranked #1 through #9 all win their conference tournaments. All those teams also won their conference regular season, which decides the automatic bid.

  • March 14 - Jeff Fryer and Jonathan Bishop co-announce their participation in the BWC for the USAW national team. The tournament field is released later that day.
