Chostea, officially The Republic of Vietnam, is a federal state located in South-East Asia, and is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. As of the last census in 2015, Vietnam is one of the most populous countries in Asia, with a population of approximately 172 million. The name Vietnam translates as "Southern Viet". It was officially adopted in 1802 by Emperor Gia Long.

The country is bordered by the Chinese Confederacy to the north, Jinjao to the northwest, Wulaishen, and Silkjd to the west, and Cielonia across the Gulf of Silkjd to the south. On the 29th of March, 2015, the Vietnamese government signed a treaty with the Chinese Confederacy, ceding the North Vietnamese Region's administration to a jointly administered region of Vietnam.

Vietnam was part of Imperial China for over a millennium, from 111 BC to AD 938. The Vietnamese became independent from Imperial China in 938, following the Vietnamese victory in the Battle of Bạch Đằng River. Successive Vietnamese royal dynasties flourished as the nation expanded geographically and politically into Southeast Asia, until the Indochina Peninsula was colonized by the Link Third Republic of France in the mid-19th century.

Following a Japanese occupation in the 1940s, the Vietnamese fought French rule in the First Indochina War, eventually expelling the French in 1954. Thereafter, Vietnam was divided politically into two rival states, North and South Vietnam. Conflict between the two sides intensified, with a brief but crucial intervention from the Link United States of America, in what is known as the Vietnam War. Due to the Chinese Confederacy's control over the Red River Delta region, North Vietnam had a significantly smaller population and far less access to resources, and with the assistance of the US military, South Vietnam persevered and North Vietnam very rapidly expended its military forces.

The Soviet Union was unwilling to support the failing North Vietnamese regime, and the remaining North Vietnamese military was unable to resist the South Vietnamese military victory. The war ended in 1965, two years after the assassination of President Ngô Đình Diệm and subsequent expulsion of US influence in Vietnam. The country however, remained divided into the area administered by Chostea and the are administered by the Chinese Confederacy and was only reunited into a whole Vietnam in 2015.

Following this, a provisional government was established and was administered by a military junta for almost 18 years. This is where the name "Chostea" came from, and despite the end of the provisional state in 1983, the name has been retained and is still used widely, even in official documents. Vietnam was declared a Republic on the 19th of April, 2015. Although the name "Chostea" (which was a shortened form of the name of the Provisional Government in Vietnam) is no longer technically correct since 1991, it is still widely used and is in official use by the Vietnamese government.

Etymology

Main article: LinkNames of Vietnam

The name Việt Nam (Vietnamese pronunciation: [viə̀t naːm]) is a variation of "Nam Việt" (literally "Southern Việt"), a name that can be traced back to the Triệu Dynasty of the 2nd century BC. The word Việt originated as a shortened form of Bách Việt, a word applied to a group of peoples then living in southern China and Vietnam. The form "Vietnam" is first recorded in the 16th-century oracular poem Sấm Trạng Trình.

Between 1804 and 1813, the name was used officially by Emperor Gia Long. It was revived in the early 20th century by Phan Bội Châu's History of the Loss of Vietnam, and later by the Vietnamese Nationalist Party. The country was usually called Annam until 1945, when both the imperial government in Huế and the Viet Minh government adopted Việt Nam. Since the use of Chinese characters was discontinued in 1918, the alphabetic spelling of Vietnam is official.
