Overview

The Imperial Nihangoki Armed Forces (INAF) are the military forces of Nihangok. The Armed Forces are divided into six branches: the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, the Marine Corps, the Strategic Rocket Force, and the Strategic Support Force. The INAF is headed by the Imperial Nihangoki Military Commission (INMC), which is composed of the heads of each armed service, the head of the military, the Defence Minister, the Prime Minister as representative of the Nihangoki Throne, and Commander-in-Chief Emperor Yorohito who is nominally the chair. In times of prolonged major warfare, typically against multiple significantly powerful countries, the INMC may be expanded to include the Treasurer and the Interior Minister. Additionally, a secondary council known as the Nihangoki Civilian War Council (NCWC) may be created. The NCWC is flexible in structure, but will typically consist of the Prime Minister, Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, three - four senior Cabinet ministers, Leader of the Opposition, and two - three senior Shadow Ministers. The NCWC acts as an advisory body & representative of the civilian interests of the nation with regards to decisions for war, with the principle that NCWC decisions supported by the majority of ministers would be adopted by the INMC.

Created at the end of the 2nd Gohonjin Civil War in 1974, it is tasked with protecting the Nihangoki State, its interests, and its people from threats, both foreign and domestic. The Imperial Nihangoki Armed Forces are to serve a constructive purpose and ensure continued peace, keeping Karshe under the aegis of stability & continued prosperity. When necessary, the Imperial Nihangoki Armed Forces are to take action to restore peace and secure the safety of our allies as quickly as possible. The Imperial Nihangoki Armed Forces will also take initiatives to defend the wider global population from any existential threat, in prior consultation & notification of other countries.

History

The modern-day Imperial Nihangoki Armed Forces are a direct descendant of the Revolutionary Gohonjin Armed Forces (RGAF). RGAF belonged to the People's Revolutionary Republic of Gohonjin (1951-1974) during which it was a significant instrument of the civilian government to propagate revolutionary ideals. It has also been used for more aggressive posturing to further influence its neighbours towards a socialist direction. Prior to the RGAF, the predecessor military, known as the Imperial Gohonjin Military (IGM), fought in the Global Wars, suffering significant casualties due to being understrengthed. The IGM split into the RGAF, Imperial Loyalists and the Gohonjin Republican Militia (GRM) shortly after victory in the Second Global War, due to deep political division within the country. The modern-day INAF currently is not involved in any significant military alliance, but has had historical partnerships with other countries both within Karshe & further afield.

Intelligence Agencies and Special Capabilities

Nihangok operates a wide variety of missiles, many of which are nuclear capable. The nuclear triad is formed by siloes and mobile launchers controlled by the INSRF (and tactical nukes via long-range MLRS held by INA), ballistic missile submarines and attack submarines equipped with nuclear cruise missiles controlled by the RNN, and various air-launched nuclear-equipped missiles & bombs controlled by the RNAF. Nihangok clearly outlines that it will NOT engage in a first strike, except for when there is an existential threat to the wider global population (such as mass global bioweapon deployment, imminent asteroid impact, extraterrestrial invasion, etc.). Nihangok will, however, seek to inflict the maximum price against adversaries deploying nuclear weapons against it or any of its allies. This includes any retaliatory strikes, as well as pre-emptive deployment of advanced ASAT capabilities to prevent targeting information, and at an extreme end, the commencement of Kessler Syndrome. The State of Nihangok considers these measures to be extreme and only to be used in exceptional circumstances, although it will not hesitate to do so if and when the conditions have been met.

In order to protect the most important cities and strategic locations from ICBM and RKM strikes, the State of Nihangok has employed an experimental form of defence system known as STOP (Strategic Threat Obstruction Protocol), which attempts to intercept and disrupt these weapons. This is effectively a series of experimental defensive weaponry that aims to eliminate any major strategic threat to the areas protected by these systems. The State of Nihangok also devised the LAST HOPE (Last Attempt at Strategic Termination & Housing Of Persons Enduring) protocol as a last ditch effort to save the nation. It involves the use of all conventional and unconventional weapons in the nation's arsenal to drive off attackers and the preservation of as much of the remaining populace as possible. This is also part of the wider countervalue strategy employed by the nation as part of its nuclear weapons usage doctrine. It is noted that while the LAST HOPE protocol plans primarily for the event of a foreign power's attempt at obliterating the State of Nihangok, this protocol can also be enacted should some other existential threat arise.

To enhance the credibility of threat of all options on the table, the State of Nihangok also funds additional research in civilian & scientific areas which may have military applications, as well as direct military research. This includes prosthetic integration, advancements in AI technologies, direct-energy weapons, methods to clean up space debris, space debris tracking & detection technologies, development of highly heat-resistant & impact-resistant materials, electromagnetic pulsing research, conductive materials research, electricity fluctuation & capacity research, development into unmanned platforms & sensors, and other key advanced areas. This is to ensure that the nation is capable of weathering the consequences of the drastic measures it may take better than its adversaries, while also demonstrating a level of commitment to all allies and adversaries of Nihangok on the lengths it is willing to go to. However, it is to be noted that most of this technology remains at best experimental, which means the State of Nihangok is likely to only partially mitigate some of the effects of the drastic measures it chooses to implement.

Furthermore, the State of Nihangok also invests significantly in a world-class network of national intelligence agencies, which coordinate with provincial and other national law enforcement related authorities. Collectively known as the Nihangoki Intelligence Community (NIC), these agencies, while not officially a part of the military, play a critical role in the collecting, synthesising, coordinating and protecting of information to provide to the INMC and civilian government, such that decisions & actions can be effectively carried out. The NIC consists of His / Her Excellency's (dependent on monarch's gender) National Intelligence Organisation (HENIO), the Nihangoki Security Intelligence Commission (NSIC), the Nihangoki Secret Intelligence Service (NSIS), the Nihangoki Signals Directorate (NSD), the Nihangoki Geospatial Intelligence Commission (NGIC), and the Defence Intelligence Organisation (DIO). HENIO is responsible for the assessment and communication of information with the civillian government, enabling decisions & actions to be made, while leading coordination efforts with other agencies and between the NIC and other organisations. NSIC is the principle internal intelligence / counterintelligence agency, responsible for the protection of Nihangok from espionage, foreign interference and other security risks by organisations and high-risk individuals. NSIS is the principle foreign intelligence agency, responsible for the covert collection of foreign intelligence which may be critical to the security and national interests of Nihangok. They are also aided by the NSD and NGIC, which collect information in their specialised domains, as well as conducting disruptive operations where necessary in their relevant domain. The DIO is the principle agency responsible for the assessment of all strategic and military intelligence information and enables joint assessment of information & coordination of necessary action between the various branches of the military, conducting planning for the INAF while also providing advice & analysis to the INMC.

The Imperial Nihangoki Armed Forces also have a well-funded, elite unit of Special Forces which receive world-class training & important equipment. Among these are the elite Informatics & Cyberspace Units belonging to the RNSSF, which coordinate with similar elements from the Nihangoki Intelligence Community. Here, there is an unparalleled ability for the military and state to conduct highly advanced and effective operations in the digital space, exploiting any weakness to its full potential and either unleashing devastating attacks or shaping the battlespace to one more suitable to the objectives of the INAF. Aside from this are elite units within the Special Forces branch to have an uncanny tenacity & combat skills within urban, amphibious and jungle environments, driven partly due to the large coastlines and tropical / highly urbanised environment of the country. This is complemented with the INA's Rapid Aerial Reaction Force, elite paratrooper units with the goal of rapidly deploying to and reinforcing critical areas of the front. These units are specially trained to be resourceful in barren and isolated environments and execute plans with limited resources, in part due to the likelihood of these units being deployed to one of the various remote islands for reinforcement or preliminary capture & sabotage operations, where they will face tough resistance with limited supplies, equipment and support.

The State of Nihangok's widespread geography and general distance from most potential adversaries presents a unique blessing, but also challenge to the monitoring & security of the nation. The widespread EEZ due to the vast oceans means that the State of Nihangok must patrol a wide area for potential piracy, illegal use of the region, as well as criminal & refugee traffic passing through the region containing illicit drugs, people and other issues. To ensure this wide area can be monitored continuously, a number of different equipment is used, operated by the RNN, RNAF and RNSSF, in conjunction with provincial and national law enforcement agencies, as well as the (Celestial) Emperor's / Empress's (depending on the ruling monarch's gender) Coast Guard, responsible for the patrolling of the seas. The Jeom Onmyoren Operational Radar Network (JOORN) is a network of powerful OTH-B and OTH-SW radars dotted around the mainland and are operated by the RNSSF. JOORN monitors both aerial and maritime traffic, while also providing valuable geographic information to the other military & civilian branches and having the ability to detect missile launches over 5 000km away. Additionally, both the RNN and RNAF operate a vast array of unmanned drones to enable collection of information over a vast area in real time, while ensuring other platforms such as AWACS and MPA aircraft are used to monitor & coordinate on more specific areas which require little to no delay in human input.

Military Relationships/Alliances

The State of Nihangok does not have any official military alliances or defensive pacts thus far, but has committed to defend all states on Karshe from outside threats which themselves do not threaten the stability of the region. These nations are:

Additionally, the State of Nihangok also has had strategic partnerships with other nations on military technologies and other military / geopolitical affairs. These nations are:
