University of Estrada
University of Estrada
The University of Estrada (Estandér: Universidade de Estrada) is a public, co-educational, research university located in the Estandér capital city of Estrada. It was established as the Royal University of São Jorge de Estrada on land granted by Dom Afonso V, King of Estandé, as the first secular institution in Estandé. It was created in order to curb the Church's monopoly on national education and to divert attention away from Santo Agostinho Catholic University, the main institution operated by the Church. It was eventually renamed 'Dom João I University of Estrada' as a tribute to the early passing of Dom João I. It became the first co-educational university in 1895. During the Pacification Campaigns, it was reformed into the University of Estrada in order to remove Royalist connotations.
The University of Estrada, being the most well-funded and prestigious public university in the country, became the main centre of the Estandér Enlightenment and liberal intellectualism. The Republican Wars of 1843 started in Estrada as a small demonstration, which eventually turned into a greater uprising. After Coroa was captured and a Royalist counter-attack was repelled during the Second Battle of Estrada, the United Provinces of Central Estandé was established by the Triunvirato Liberal. The leader of the revolt, Jorge Inácio do Rego, declared the creation of the United Provinces on campus grounds. The Royal Army managed to finally retake Estrada on April 2, 1845, leading to the execution of the Triunvirato Liberal and the demise of the United Provinces. During the fighting the central building of the University of Estrada burned down, however, it miraculously spared the surrounding buildings. It was eventually rebuilt. The University of Estrada continues to be a hotspot for intellectualism and the so-called 'anti-status quo.'
The University of Estrada has reserved a special district in eastern Estrada called the "Distrito Universitário," containing the three campuses. The Distrito Universitário is a 'college town' and is usually where university students have their dormitories and facilities. It is also fairly isolated from downtown Estrada and, thus, has a special tram and railway system which leads to the city. The government usually provides amenities for university students through the university itself in the form of food, welfare, transportation, and monetary assistance for scholar students. Due to its sprawling size and funding, the University of Estrada has the most numerous and most advanced research facilities and academic institutes in the country.
