Brief history of your nation:

Of all the European colonial powers which had established themselves on Malaya, only the British Empire was able to secure its dominance over the region. Along with the directly-controlled Straits Settlements, the Federated Malay States and the Unfederated Malay States came into existence on the peninsula as British protectorates in the early 19th century. Malaya was occupied by the Japanese Empire from 1942 to 1945 during the Pacific War. In 1946, the Malayan Union was established by the British administration with a view to uniting Malaya as a single political entity. However, due to opposition from ethnic Malays, the union was reorganized into the Federation of Malaya in 1948.

The Malayan Communist Party (MCP) and its military wing, the Malayan National Liberation Army (MNLA) had been waging a guerilla war on British and Malayan authorities since 1948. Although most of the MCP's support base are ethnic Chinese, a number of Malays, Indians and Orang Asli also stood with the communist cause. The Malay Nationalist Party (later renamed to Malayan Nationalist Party) aligned themselves with the communists, supported by many local Malay leaders who were unhappy with the colonial rule. Under the leadership of MCP Secretary-General Chin Peng and exiled Chinese communist revolutionary Lin Piao, the MNLA began to win a series of a decisive battles against British forces and eventually achieved a military victory in 1957. Radical land reforms were carried out by the new communist government in Malaya to redistribute British plantations to the peasantry, and "people's courts" were established across the country in order to put "enemies of the revolution" on trial. Malaya provided much material aid and support to the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI). Ideological conflict with the USSR had led to the Malayan-Soviet Split in the late 1960s.

It wasn't until the introduction of market economic reforms in 1979 that long-lasting stability was established in Malaya, after more than a decade of being plagued by chaos, starvation and internal conflict. Since then, the country has experienced a period of rapid economic growth and increasing international reputation. The port city of Singapore, which was made a special economic zone in 1980, has became a major transport and financial hub of Southeast Asia.

After the fall of the Soviet Union and the conclusion of the cold war, immense pressure for democracy increases. Free and open elections were held in 1994. Underground political movements such as United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) then led by Mahathir Mohamad attracted voters from northern states of Kedah and Kelantan due to their conservative ideology.
