Names of Roania

Names of the country

There is no official name for the country known to foreigners as 'Roania'. The Sovereign isn't Sovereign of anywhere in particular, He is simply The Sovereign. The name Roania has no meaning or legal force within Tianxia beyond the fact that the current dynasty upon the Dragon Throne is the RoAn dynasty, as it has been since the first encounter with other star empires centuries ago. Depending on their friendliness towards the state in question and their personal willingness, referring to Roania in official communiques can lead to being ignored or dismissed with varying degrees of iciness.

The various feudatories have their own names, of course, but for the most part are dealt with through the bureaus of the Secretariat by their choice. Where foreigners are permitted, style guides have been published.

When the country as a whole is referred to specifically as in distinction with the outside galaxy the names used internally are Rudanese concepts, or the local translation thereof.

Demonyms

The demonyms most in use in tianxia are planetary. There is no official demonym denoting a subject of the polity as a whole beyond the various notations of the word 'subject', although most forms of the word 'person' in official documents refer exclusively to those subject to the Throne as in the official notation 'huaren', meaning 'person of (or in) the kingdoms', meaning a subject of the Sovereign or the feudatories.

The words for foreigners demonstrate this as well: Traditionally they were 'not people', like rebels against the Throne, demonstrating they are outside the protection of the Throne's laws and sovereignty. As until relatively recently Tianxia had never met another space-faring power capable of resisting being made subject to the throne there was no need for a distinction between foreigners and targets. In modern Rudanese foreigners are 'guests', an appeal to hospitality.

The various so-called homelands then pass their names on to their colonial diaspora, a tradition kept up by civilized worlds given permission to colonize. Thus, a Rudanese individual could come from any of dozens of worlds, though if you're on Rudan itself (like most foreigners) you're probably speaking

Species names

The primary species known as 'Roanians' does not have an official or scientific name (not that scientific names exist per se there). They are simply 'people' (ren, in Rudanese). This is a rather catholic term, because it includes both the humanoids regularly known as Roanians as well as all their subject races. The important distinction is not between species but between those who acknowledge the Sovereign and those who don't.

There are very few species-specific laws in the Ten Thousand Worlds, almost all of them revolving around physical requirements and rights pertaining to them. In fact, at a recent audit, it was determined that there were no known laws currently in force in the Secretariat code that specifically targeted a species beyond such laws as were necessary for them to serve alongside others.

The primary demonyms for species tend to be planetary as well. Nmmr are called Nmmr because they come from the planet Nmmr and they're all called Nmmr and they call everything else Nmmr until they are made to stop. But, legally, a Nmmr on Rudan is indistinguishable from everyone else on Rudan, subject to the same law. While some feudatories have so-called 'alien codes', Ly Thanh being the most famous example with their 'Law Regarding the Control and Subservience of the Khem', they have largely fallen into abeyance and have no applicability beyond their home world beyond those ascribed by custom and tradition.

As the traditional 'Roanian' home world of Altecrast is a lump of radioactive rock under permanent blockade, they identify themselves by their cultural planet of origin. Calling them Altecrastian would confuse them and slow the conversation down as they took a minute to process it. Meanwhile, there's only one actual Altecrastian in the entire galaxy, and she prefers to be called 'Highness'.
