Head of State - King Manuel II

The Sovereign is the Head of State of the realm and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. The Sovereign act on the advice of the executive power. He can acumulate the executive power in a State of Emergency.

The Government

The Government is elected by popular vote every 4 years. It is composed by the Prime-Minister who is appointed by the Monarch after the publication of the election results by the Electoral Court. The Government is composed by the Prime Minister, the ministers and the respective secretaries of State appointed to each Ministry. The Government holds the executive power, legislates and presents the projects of law to Parliament.

The Parliament

The House is composed of 230 MP(s) elected by uninominal circles. The House approves laws or reject them for further apreciation. Is is in the House that debate happens between the Executive and the oposition, the base of the system. It is needed a 3/4 majority of votes to change the Constitution in any article apart those that are unchangable.

The Upper House

The Upper House is composed by 125 hereditary peers who make sure that all laws passed are in accordance to the Constitution. It can also be an organ for consultation.

The Justice

The everyday garantee that the courts and the juditial system works is under the Ministry of Justice.
The juditial power is independent in its totality. A Chief-Justice is elected by Parliament and confirmed by the Sovereign.
