China, officially the Federated Provinces of China (FPC), is a country in East Asia. It is bordered on the north by Russian Federation, on the south by Vietnam, Laos, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, and India, on the east by the Republic of Korea, and on the west by Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakstan. FPC is the world's second most populous country, with a population of around 1.18 billion. Covering approximately 11.3 million square kilometers (4.3 million sq. mi.), it is the world's third largest country by area. The country is officially divided into 22 provinces, 8 autonomous regions and 6 direct-controlled municipalities (Peking, Tientsin, Shanghai, Chungking, Hong Kong and Macau).

China emerged as one of the world's first civilizations, in the fertile basin of the Yellow River in the North China Plain. China was one of the world's foremost economic powers for most of the two millennia from the 1st until the 19th century. For millennia, China's political system was based on absolute hereditary monarchies, or dynasties, beginning with the Xia dynasty in 21st century BCE. Since then, China has expanded, fractured, and re-unified numerous times. In the 3rd century BCE, the Qin dynasty reunited core China and established the first Chinese empire. The succeeding Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE) saw some of the most advanced technology at that time, including paper making and the compass, along with agricultural and medical improvements. The invention of gunpowder and movable printing press in the Tang dynasty (618–907) and Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127) completed the Four Great Inventions. Tang culture spread widely in Asia, as the new Silk Route brought traders to as far as Mesopotamia and the Horn of Africa. The Qing Empire, China's last dynasty, which formed the territorial basis for modern China suffered heavy losses to self isolation and foreign imperialism.

The Chinese monarchy collapsed in 1912 with the 1911 Revolution, when the Republic of China (ROC) replaced the Qing dynasty. China was invaded by the Empire of Japan during World War II. The Chinese Civil War resulted in a division of territory in 1949 when the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) led by Mao Zedong established the People's Republic of China on mainland China while the Kuomintang-led ROC government retreated to the island of Taiwan. Both the PRC and the ROC claimed to be the sole legitimate government of China, resulting in an ongoing dispute until the Second Chinese Civil War in 1962. In 1964, the Federated Provinces of China was founded as part of a compromise, under which 4 provinces controlled by the communists would mutiny against the CCP and join the newly formed country. When Peking fell after the collapse of CCP, Chiang Ching-kuo, the leader of KMT (Chiang Kai-shek died from an assassination in Taiwan), met with former CCP officials Chou En-lai and Deng Xiaoping to discuss the establishment of FPC. As a result, the Federated Provinces of China was officially established on 10 October 1965. After the end of the Second Chinese Civil War, the United Nations recognized the FPC as the government to represent China at all UN conferences starting from 1967.

China nominally a federal parliamentary republic and a representative democracy with five separate branches of government, including a unicameral legislature. Chin is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and a founding member of several multilateral and regional cooperation organizations such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the Silk Road Fund, the New Development Bank, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, and is a member of the BRICS, the G8+5, the G20, the APEC, and the East Asia Summit. China is the world's largest economy by GDP at purchasing power parity and the second-largest economy by nominal GDP and the world's second wealthiest country. The nation is the world's fastest-growing major economy, the world's largest manufacturer and exporter and has the world's second largest standing army by military personnel, with the second-largest defense budget and is an officially recognized nuclear-weapon state. China is known for its well-known culture, cuisine, manufacturing, scientific and technological innovations with the second largest number of UNESCO sites in the world and the fourth most visited country with 65.7 million visitors.
