QUEBEC

The Republic of Quebec commonly called Quebec, is a Republic situated in the northeastern part of North America. It is bordered on the north by the Northwest Passage, on the south by Nuovoiork, to the southeast by The arkham state, by the east by Newfoundland and Labrador, and on the west by New reikland. Quebec covers roughly 1.5 million square kilometers, making it the 4th largest nation in North America behind Canada, Legio de Caesar, and Alaska, and has has an estimated population of 16.9 million. Quebec comprises of the Province of Quebec, with the South Labrador strip being disputed with Canada.

Quebec has a policy of non-intervention in world politics, instead focusing on improving it's domestic issues, as well as trying to emerge as a cultural and economic power to rival it's neighbors.

Etymology

The name "Québec", which comes from the Algonquin word kébec, meaning "where the river narrows", originally referred to the area around Quebec City where the Saint Lawrence River narrows to a cliff-lined gap. Early variations in the spelling of the name included Québecq (Levasseur, 1601) and Kébec (Lescarbot, 1609). French explorer Samuel de Champlain chose the name Québec in 1608 for the colonial outpost he would use as the administrative seat for the French colony of New France.

The standard way to refer to a citizen of Quebec is as a "Quebecois", though many of it's Anglophone neighbors refer to them as "Quebeckers".

History

Quebec was quite similar to our own timeline, though when the USA was weakened in the late 1890s by rioting, food shortages, and guerilla warfare in New York City, Canada simply sat and watched as the United States gradually fell apart, finally being dissolved in the 1930s. Canada's government had observed the root of the cause: secessionist movements. Canada gradually doubled down on it's native American and French minorities, creating more hostility between the groups. This hostility led to further tensions and a deep resentment for English Canadians in Quebec.

In the late 20th century, Canada stood relatively isolated on the continental stage, and still dealt with rioting and secession, as the policies meant to assimilate turned out to make the problems worse. When the Liberal Government of Canada won the election, they agreed to hold a referendum for Quebec's independence in 1995, with around 71% of Quebecois voting in favor of independence. Quebec officially gained independence in November of 1995, with a new government established in 1998.

Quebec's government was unstable after independence, as it had many parties competing for dominance. The Bloc Quebecois gradually absorbed the opposition parties with every election, and officially became a One-Party State in 2005, ending any semblance of democracy. With the Bloc Quebecois as the sole legal party, the succession of Premiers gradually became more and more authoritarian, with Premier Jean-Claude Duvalier officially declaring Empire in 2029 after the successful partitioning of Canada, though New Vanadia, Teksland, and Legio de Caesar would later reunite their occupation zones into a Canadian Commonwealth, with Quebec only ceding Nunavut and most of Ontario, while eastern Ontario, Newfoundland, and Labrador were given Provincial status in 2031.

After the great collapse of the Eastern Bloc in 2055, Quebec found itself dealing with secessionist movements in French Guyana, Labrador, Newfoundland, and Greenland, with all of which gaining independence by 2055 or 2056. As it was the final nail in the coffin for any hope of empire, Quebec underwent some serious changes in it's structure, and has since transitioned into a full democracy on par with Nuovoiork and Teksland, even going so far as to offer opportunities to citizens of the allies of Quebec to help grow it's population in hopes of settling the northern frontiers, albeit with mild success.

As a result, Quebec is a multicultural and multiracial nation, quite similar to the Canada of our timeline. United in French language, tradition, and various cultures of French, Spanish, Italian, and English speaking nations from around the continent, Quebec is a land of opportunity for Francophones.

Geography

Located in the eastern part of Canada, and (from a historical and political perspective) part of Central Canada, Quebec occupies a territory more than three times the size of France or Texas, most of which is very sparsely populated. It's topography is very different from one region to another due to the varying composition of the ground, the climate (latitude and altitude), and the proximity to water. The Saint Lawrence Lowland and the Appalachians are the two main topographic regions in southern Quebec, while the Canadian Shield occupies most of central and northern Quebec.

In general, the climate of Quebec is cold and humid, with no dry season. The southern portion of Quebec is Humid Continental (DFB), the interior and central portion of Quebec being DFC, or Subarctic, with Tundra prevailing in the north. Overall, Quebec's climate is cold, brutal, and inconsistent. Quebec's climate allows for much of the nation to experience the widest variety of weather. Summers are mild, and can be humid, dry, cloudy, sunny, or something in between.

Demographics

Population
According to the 2030 Census, the Empire's population stood at around 16.9 million, with a Census taken every decade. Quebec's breeding programs had artificially grown the French population in the Empire, with a quota of 4 children per woman, though recent waves of immigration have since led to a population boom. Average Life expectancy is around 75 years, most elderly are native white Quebecois.

Language

The official language of Quebec is French. Quebec is the only Canadian province whose population is mainly Francophone; 12,102,210 people (95.3 percent of the population) recorded it as their sole native language in the 2020 Census, and 6,249,085 (80.0%) recorded that they spoke it most often at home. Knowledge of French is widespread even among those who do not speak it natively; in 2011, about 94.4 percent of the total population reported being able to speak French, alone or in combination with other languages, while 7.3% reported being able to speak English.

Religion

Quebec's official religion is the Cult of Saturn, with all other religious convictions officially outlawed in Quebec, it's provinces, colonies, and areas under military occupation. The Cult of Saturn is inspired by Legio de Caesar's Cult of Mars, but more elaborate and clearly defined as an ideology.

Race
Quebec does not publish any official statistics on race, as most Quebecois appear European, with some non-European populations in the large cities. The Quebecois identity is not necessarily concerned with preserving the racial purity of French people, but rather the cultural purity and the linguistic purity, with little tolerance for cultures other than their own, but welcomes immigration with emphasis on assimilation, and learning the French language.

Government

Quebec is officially a LinkRepublic and a LinkMultiparty Democracy, with the National Assemby being the official legislative body in Quebec. The Head of state is the Premier, who is elected by popular vote. All political policies, decisions, and aspects are defined by Constitution of Quebec, and is the loi du pays. All national level meetings and Party conventions are hosted in Renee-Levasseur, the new planned capital of Quebec.

Following the Declaration of Empire in 2029, Quebec has merged the Title of Emperor with Premier. The Party has legislative, judicial, and executive powers. Despite Party dominance, Quebec has no official constitution and instead follows the Code of Saturn (see link above) as a de facto constitution, emphasizing a set of values to guide the nation's policies.

Foreign Relations and Military

Quebec has been relatively isolationist, politically. The government, though it is limited, often determines what nations immigrants and tourists may live and visit, as Quebec has a great deal of military might, and after years of defending their borders, it has led to suspicion of it's neighbors, save for Nuovoiork. It's politics internationally are mainly focused on industrialization, human rights, political transparency, maintaining tight border control, and outpacing Canada as the lead producer of Maple Syrup, as Quebec's abundance of natural resources are used as leeway for influence.

Quebec's military budget accounts for around 60-65% of Quebec's GDP, and is historically the most militarized nation in North America. A mandatory conscription for four years for all men is enforced, with a large emphasis on service in L'armee Liberation du Quebec. Much of Quebec's economy is being channeled into the production of war materials, weapons, and various military Equipement, though has since declined to a more sustainable level. Quebec was under Martial Law up until 2049.

Quebec's economy has transitioned from a primarily service-based economy to a more industrial economy, as the Quebecois government has absorbed all private industry in the country, bringing new wealth to the nation, as specified by Saturn's representation as a deity of abundance, in this case, an abundance of manufactured goods. Economically, it is still behind more powerful economies like Nuovoiork and Legio de Caesar, but still a very powerful economy nonetheless.

Strengths: Solid mining sector, sits atop the largest deposits of fossil fuels, growing service, ag, and industrial sectors, relative political stability, and friendly towards foreigners and immigrants.

Weaknesses: crumbling Societ-style architecture, militarism still haunts society, omnipresent legacy of the Bloc Quebecois and One Party Rule, blatant disregard for other nations, and very dependent on foreign minerals for it's economic backbone, geographically boxed in by unfriendly neighbors, and lack of population to fill domestic jobs.

Culture

Culturally, Quebec has became quite distinct as a nation, mainly utilizing it's French heritage to justify rigid protections to it's language, customs, and culture in past excursions. After Quebec's de-nazification of Quebec in the 2050s, tradition and culture has came first, as many Quebecois practice both traditions from the French past, Saturnian traditions that were enforced by Party Doctrine, and recent immigrants from Latin America and south of the border. Foods and drinks like Poutine, curry, croissants, Haitian creole chicken, spaghetti, and red wine are considered essential to the New Quebecois way of life.

An LinkEthnic Map of Quebec.

Infrastructure

Quebec's infrastructure, like it's industrial sector, is growing, as most of the buildings are made of wood, businesses are now introducing glass, steel, and concrete into the mix, with Quebec doing it's best to promote growth in the construction industry, with most construction corporations being subsidized by the Bloc Quebecois.

Energy

Quebec has the luxury of sitting atop some of the largest reserves of untapped minerals. Bauxite, iron, gold, uranium, copper, and so on. LinkHere's just how much we have!. Despite it's already massive reserves of minerals, nearly all of the fossil fuels used are from it's colonies in Africa or D'outre Mer, with rigorous mining campaigns to strip all of the colonies mineral resources before anyone else can reach them. In other words, Quebec has all it's energy needs met by fossil fuels, and uses them to fuel it's economy, military, and Empire.
