Etymology
The official name of the sovereign state - the Grand Duchy of Hessisch-Nassau - stems from the territories that make up the nation. Originally, Hesse and Nassau were individual states; however, following the War of 1825, Hesse successfully annexed Nassau, and in 1827 the country was renamed to Hessisch-Nassau (“hessisch” meaning Hessian).
