The South Pacific 2018 Advent Calendar

Hello TSP and welcome to this year's Advent Calendar! Over the next 24 days we'll have a new holiday-themed activity/discussion topic every day, so make sure you check this dispatch regularly to have some fun!

01-December
Today's discussion topic is your December bucketlist. This time of year can be busy for everyone, so what do you want to achieve this month? Share your ideas on our Regional Message Board or on the Linkforum thread.

Nakarisaune wrote:What's behind the TSP Advent Calendar door today? Oh... a tree? How did that fit inside an advent calendar? And why hasn't it been decorated yet?!

Let's work together to decorate a Christmas tree for TSP! You don't need art skills or fancy editing - you just need to put an ornament on the tree, and help create a prettier holiday :D

Erinor wrote:Hey all, it's the third day of the TSP Advent Calendar and today we're discussing what Advent means to you! I've written about the Christian traditions of Advent here: http://tspforums.xyz/thread-6663.html, but we want to hear from you, too! Feel free to share in that thread or live on the ever-glorious RMB!

Today we have a winter-themed online game for you! The game is called LinkSnowline and the aim is to draw a path for Santa to pick up presents and make it to the finish of each stage. My productivity today can attest to the fact that this is addictive...

If you finish, please take a screenshot of your score to compare against others'. To start you off, I'll give you my score to beat:

Today is the start of our decorate-a-lampshade competition! Decorate

in any sort of holiday-theme you want. The contest will run until the 25th... probably. And the winner will get their name in the WFE... probably.

06-December
Today is our multicultural celebration day! While Advent is a Christian celebration, many other faiths and cultures have celebrations around this time of year. We'd like to hear about the holidays and celebrations of TSPers from around the World!

North prarie wrote:Welcome to Day 7 of the TSP Advent Calendar! Today's activity is simple, but super fun. It's a one-line story contest! Here's the basics: Copy and paste the poster before yours' post. Then, use one line, maximum, to add to the story. It has to be relevant to the story, though!
Be as silly or as serious as you want. But most importantly: have fun!

You can do so here and on the forums: http://tspforums.xyz/thread-6678.html

As I've shared in the opening post of that thread, mine are The Nightmare Before Christmas and all 6 extended edition Middle Earth films! What about you?

09-December
Today is our Nativity memories day! Did you ever have to take part in a school Nativity play? Did you get a main part, or did you always end up being the rear end of a donkey? Post your experiences on the RMB or in Linkthis thread.

Nakarisaune wrote:Day 10 of the TSP Advent Calendar - http://tspforums.xyz/thread-6684.html

By now, a bit into December, you'll probably have been hearing Christmas songs and carols for the last three months. But have you listened hard enough to identify what they are from just a few seconds?

The first challenge: can you recognise these Christmas carols from just 15 seconds? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfMYBkncGxM
The second challenge (hard mode!): can you name these modern songs associated with Christmas from just 10 seconds? Bonus points if you can identify the artists! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3a364yODZQ

You can send in answers on the forum thread (though please put them in a spoiler!), Discord DMs, or telegrams.
Answers will come on Christmas Eve. The person who gets the most points on each round will get their own customised Christmas Llama (specially trained to bray in the tune of Silent Night).

Beepee wrote:Today is a celebration of all things Christmas food and drink.

Well be discussing all things food throughout the day.

I encourage you to post your favourite or 'dream' Christmas food, tell us about your fondest christmas food memory or what yule be eating on Christmas Day, post a recipe (IRL or TSP inspired) or photo.

Throughout the day on the RMB and in the Advent Calendar, we'll posting a range of recipes, where you can learn to make South Pacifican Christmas Classics. Who knows they might become a favourite in your home too.

At the end of the day, your posts will become part of the Christmas Food Celebration in the Advent Calendar. (And if your food is particularly adventurous, it may also be showcased in the Beepeean Museum of Disgusting Food.)

You can post in the Link TSP Advent Calendar, RMB or dispatch but please tag me, Beepee. That way I can see it and bring it to the Advent Calendar for all to enjoy.

As always you can do so here or in the forum thread: http://tspforums.xyz/thread-6689.html

Rules: Just keep in PG-13, and don't post photos offensive to any religion, race, gender, etc.

Who doesn't love a good discussion about the weather? Wait, what do you mean "anybody who's not British"? Oh well, we're having this discussion anyway!

Christmas, for most of us, is a time of cold weather and short nights; many of us will even get snow. However, there are some people in... *shudders* the South, for whom Christmas falls in the summer. So, here are a few starter questions for this thread.

What sort of weather do you get at Christmas? Is it summer or winter for you? Would you prefer it if it was the other way around?
Do you get snow? Love it? Hate it? Wish you got it more often?

Jebediah kerbal wrote:Hello! It's this time of year again, and the unknowing victi- I mean public have sent in their wishes for you to complete! And you have ultimate power! What could go wrong!

So, all you need to do is pick any amount of wishes, and then submit your own ones (optional)! If you decide to also submit your own wishes, they have to:
A: Not be wishes obviously asking for trouble (Too easy),
B: Not be wishes that are way too specific and don’t leave any room for wrongdoing.
This should all be fairly obvious, so I won’t give any examples for these rules (and, anyways, you guys are clever). If you really need some examples, or are not sure what to do, just look at the pre-made wishes below.
C: When answering wishes don’t just say “No”.

Some wishes to start you off:
1. I wish I was in a TV show
2. I wish we could all be happy
3. I wish I could walk again
4. I wish I was rich
5. I wish I could watch every single race live
6. I wish I had more wishes
7. I wish I could talk to God
8. I wish people would realise the true purpose of Christmas
9. I wish this list would end
10. I wish the person writing this would shut up, and stop writing these wishes here.

Sedunn wrote:Christmas can be rather busy sometimes, so, to relieve the upcoming days, we could start giving the gifts already now. Since Santa isn't around yet, we have to figure out how to do it ourselves, and this is how we do it:

Give the poster above a (virtual) gift, then wait for someone to post a gift for you. It doesn't matter if the poster above already has received a gift.

Bzerneleg wrote:It's the time of the year,
When your hands start to get weary,
Look outside the window 'cause here comes the reindeers,
Write your letters and then they will carry.

As we rejoice in the wonders of Christmas, let us reflect on the bitter failures and sweet successes of this year, and once again, express appreciation for the region we all call "home".

The South Pacific awaits your cards!

Today was a Christmas quiz hosted on the RMB and Discord! Congratulations to our winner Techolandia!

Christmas songs are beloved by all, particularly those who have to listen to them all day, every day throughout December! What I'd like to know is, what's your favourite? By which I mean second favourite of course, since the whole World is in agreement that Fairytale of New York is the best Christmas song.

My second favourite is probably A Spaceman Came Travelling by Chris de Burgh, with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's version of Carol of the Bells up there as well.

On a related note, has anyone survived Whamageddon? Have you managed to make it through December without hearing Last Christmas at all? I lasted 13 days, which is probably above average...

Sedunn wrote:Christmas means different things to us. When you are young, getting lots of toys was maybe what Christmas was all about. Getting older, perhaps some special food and finally meeting relatives again. Or perhaps singing hymns? What you want for Christmas can vary from year to year, what's on your list this year?

Erinor wrote:It's a little appalling to be taking about New Year before we've even had Christmas, but, equally, it's been a part of the Advent Calendar tradition, so, today, we want to hear about whether or not people celebrate New Year in your NS nation and if so, how?

23-December
It's New Year's resolution time! The time of year where you half-heartedly decide to do something you don't want to for a couple of months, before giving up.

So, what resolutions do you have planned for next year, and do you think you'll be able to succeed?
How did you do with last year's resolutions (if you set any)?

Bzerneleg wrote:Today marks the final day of Advent and indeed this year's Advent Calendar. As a wonderful Christmas season finally comes to an end, let us wrap it up by each sharing our beautiful and unique stories of this remarkable holiday.
