"Polarea has come far in our short history- the Federal Commonwealth enjoys many of the highest standards of living, levels of happiness, employment satisfaction, life expectancies and technological edges in the world. Over the past few years, however, we stopped there- the Føderation became comfortable, complacent, and worst of all, stagnant. Yes, the Federal Commonwealth and its people are practically at the top of the world. Yes, Polarea has come far, and for this, we can thank everyone who worked and sacrificed before us. This nation, however, can build on its already impressive achievements, and can build a better world for itself and for all other peoples. We can build on the progress of our predecessors, and reach higher. There is so, so much yet to be done."
- Elysia Lynne making an inaugural speech after taking the oath of office in Göteborg, February 14th, 2060

Elysia Aiode Lynne is a Scottish Polarean Socialdemokratiskaføderation politician, musician/musical composer and writer serving as the First Minister of the Federal Commonwealth of Polarea and formerly as the Commonwealth Minister for Social Services, being the first to fill the former position after the death of First Minister Hilbert Hackett and the transfer of civil powers back from the Polarean Emergency Council to the civilian elected government. She has been an MFP for Edinburgh since 2056.

Early Life

Born in 2030, during the height of the Storm in Britain, Elysia Lynne would not have an easy childhood. Deliveries of essentials like food, water, and medicine were infrequent, at best, electricity to her home was intermittent, a crippled education system rendered her, like most of her peers, homeschooled, and her country was currently undergoing a catastrophic collapse in political order. Two years before her birth, in 2028, legitimate central authority in the United Kingdom of Great Britain would utterly collapse, replaced by the all-powerful paramilitaries and all-seeing eugenics monitors of the neo-fascist British State. Thus, most of her childhood would be spent under lock and key, as her parents, and then, unfortunately, only her mother, carefully hid her from patrolling "police" while she buried herself in textbooks and novels, now illegal relics of a better world her family remembered vividly and yet seemed so far in the past. When her mother had the chance, she would regale Elysia with stories of the past and of the future, stories where good people stood up in defiance against the villain and where humanity was perhaps a more moral species than it really is. Stumbling across an unused and dusty violin set in the basement of an abandoned townhouse one day while out walking, Elysia began to (badly) play a finally-found relic of her mother's embellished stories.

The Thistle Revolution was sudden, violent and devastating. Yesterday's calm was replaced by State "police" gunfighting in suburban Scottish streets with desperate revolutionaries, once striking Edinburgh laborers, and though Scotland, liberated early, would be spared the worst, the scene would repeat itself all over the island of Great Britain. By the end of 2044, London had fallen, the United Kingdom had been restored, and an uneasy peace had settled over the rubble-laden streets of Edinburgh. Two major revolutionary groups, the proto-socialist Union of Scotland and the moderate-left Scottish Republic, in unison, would declare the de facto independence of the Scottish Republic, finally finishing the rather rudely interrupted process of independence begun in 2025, decades ago. No substantial protest was raised in London. Elysia herself was not incredibly interested as St. Andrew's Cross was raised on a flagpole outside her home to jubilant cheers, but what she was interested in was that she could finally play her violin outside. In time, a piano would be salvaged and moved to the living room, and as Britain rebuilt, reconnecting with the world it had left behind, a laptop. Two years later, the northern star of the Federal Commonwealth would be raised on a second flagpole, alongside the saltire, and so a foreign anthem would be Elysia Aiode Lynne's first codetta. Of course, she would soon begin to create them herself.

As Scotland, now a Republic with 10 sisters, slowly but surely came back to life, Elysia's violin and piano, both old and worn, would become accompaniments to a fascinating discovery- a synthesizer and accompanying programs, allowing her melodies to slowly morph into electronic sonatas, and allowing the recipients of her talent to expand in scope from her tired parents to anyone with an internet connection. At 18, she began freelancing, now a fully-fledged, if inexperienced. composer. Her entry into the University of Edinburgh was celebrated by her family, and she consistently found herself, if not acing the classes, than performing rather well, and dazzling virtual audiences- not that she could see them, anyway- she usually played alone, and had it recorded, for her social anxiety was not quite resolved. Graduating Primi Ordinis after a bout of excellence later in her short schooling and still juggling a variety of courses that would make a polymath proud, Elysia grew into a renowned electronic composer, sometimes returning to more elegant forms of music for a more civilized age, with her own voice as a rare addition. In the safety of a recently rebuilt and newly purchased Edinburgh flat, she began to write, first to complement a musical scene, then for its own sake, more so when she found someone beautiful to form the other half of new duets. Such a vivace tempo would define her short early twenties, composing, writing, and singing. Creating. Yes, she was (probably) happy, and yes, she was (probably) helping people, but could she do more? There were problems that needed to be solved, issues that could be set right if, perhaps, a calm voice made itself known. Thus, her music would soften from an energetic orchestra to a calm, warm melody, as she grew a little wiser with a little age; she registered herself into SDK on her laptop, and as an electronic chime changed where her story would end, she stared out the glass towards nowhere in particular, hopes flowing endlessly through her mind.

Rise in Politics

Polarean Federal Politics

Elysia would become the Socialdemokratiskaføderation candidate for the Edinburgh federal electoral district, succeeding and becoming a backbencher MFP through grassroots activism, a fairly detailed left-wing policy plan and a renowned soft-spoken charisma. A self-declared democratic socialist, Elysia planted herself firmly in SDK's left wing, advocating a cooperative-dominated federal democratic socialism for the federal government, spending her time as backbencher building up support within the party's moderate and left groups and campaigning for cooperative-focused incentive packages at the federal level and within her home of Scotland. Her charismatic and competent presence in Parliament from 2056 is often credited with the passing of multiple cooperative assistance and education policies by SDK's left wing, helping bring the moderates and SDK center onboard, while assuaging the fears of Scottish business. At the time of her entrance into Parliament, the SDK left was functionally crippled by the defection of 20 MFPs to the newly formed Socialist Labour Alliance in 2053, and was left rudderless without its union backbone- Elysia, once again employing her famous soft-spoken charisma, political deftness and penchant for almost artistic policy presentations, shaped the socialists of SDK into a resurgent and powerful force within the party, with her as its spokeswoman, championing a cooperative socialist agenda that the faction predicted would finally solve Polarea's business-labour troubles, simmering class tension and more. for her efforts, the young MFP was made Commonwealth Minister for Social Services in the Hackett II cabinet, placating the SDK left, winning Elysia quite some fame and giving her many opportunities to better the lives of Polareans, though the left was never quite content to be the minority in the SDK slice of federal government- it wouldn't be long until they had their chance, though. In 2059, her SDK left would be finally thrust into the federal spotlight, though not in the way anyone would have preferred.

The date was July 3rd, 2059, and Arcadia, the north star, was half-swallowed by the waves. Evacuated after the detonation of a caesium dirty bomb in the city's east district, and partially sunken after the detonation of smaller explosives across the city's anchored support structures, the greatest symbol of Polarean progress sat irradiated, inundated, and abandoned. In the face of an unprecedented nuclear terrorist attack, and the cataclysmic breach of security it represented, the SDK Hackett II cabinet might've just barely survived if half its members, and its First Minister, weren't bodies floating to the bottom of the Nordsjøen. Under the pressure, any political group would've collapsed into a thousand splinters, but SDK, by a series of miracles, survived without cleaving apart at its decades-old inherent political fault lines- a much reduced and weakened SDK reconvened a week after the sinking of Arcadia, and leaderless, the federation looked to its two flanks for direction- MFP Elysia Lynne's socialist left, and MFP Mikkel Altberg's business-friendly social center. The upcoming maiden and the seasoned political heir clashed on the virtual debate floor, each speaking at a breakneck pace worthy of any great (or terrible) politician- but hour by hour, the left won out. Arguing in the end that the populace would be greatly tired of the same old pragmatic SDK, and in need of significant economic intervention following the shock of Arcadia, the combined might of SDK rallied to Elysia, with Altberg's center gracefully admitting defeat, ironically making both of them more popular, to the chagrin of the few remaining Hackett moderates. In the lead-up to the restoration of normal civilian federal government, the Socialdemokratiskaføderation campaigned across Polarea, scrambling to maintain its leadership of the country after Hackett's failures and the grief of Arcadia- most polls, even to the day of the election, were too close to call between SDK and its progressive allies and a possible Christian Traditional Union center-right coalition. Come January 10th, however, SDK maintained its position as the largest federal party in politics- winning a whopping 72 more MFP mandates than the KTU, attributed by observers to energetic campaigning (with shades of populism) by Lynne and Altberg, among others. Entering an easily-negotiated majority coalition with the Greens and a cooperation agreement with the Agrarian Centre, the Socialdemokratiskaføderation Lynne I cabinet took the reins of government on February 14th, 2060.

  • the Humanist Programme
The Humanist Programme, named for a similarly-aimed Hellenic student-labor movement, was published at the end of the 2058 SDK federation summit, is the defining document of Elysian democratic socialism within SDK, detailing a vision for a Føderation and society based upon the principles of democratic socialism, revolutionary reformism, representative (and eventually semi-direct) democracy, feminism, environmentalism, progressivism, LGBTQ+ equality, labor unionism and lower-class political mobilization.

Personal Information

Elysia is married to Helena Lynne, a hard science-fiction author, with no children- the two live comfortably in Gothenburg, and both are polyamorous. She still rarely composes, notably with the Scottish National Orchestra (stating her favorite genre of music to be high-energy orchestras) and on social media platforms, and sometimes directs physically or plays in concerts that have increased immensely in popularity since she attained a leadership position in one of the world's great powers, though she has been criticized for taking the time off national leadership to direct orchestras and make violin clips.

Personal Trivia

  • Massive fashion nerd, specializing in dreaming up both frilly outfits and flowing-line futuristic clothing (and recently, fabricating them)

  • Suffers from a permanent limp (shorter right leg) gained as the result of a stray gunshot wound in the Thistle Revolution and can still be sometimes seen using a cane, though more commonly uses a concealed assistive servo rig

  • Lawful good alignment

  • Has had relapses of PDD (dysthymia/persistent depressive disorder) and generalized anxiety, as well as impostor syndrome (and has been successful in keeping it private so far)

  • Heavily prone to drum/beat-tapping on basically any surface possible when stressed (which is a lot)
