The World of Jamilkhuze

Jamilkhuze is set in a post-apocalyptic 24th-century parallel Earth in which the main geographic difference involves land masses in the Southern Hemisphere. In this world, Australia is significantly larger, juts farther out into the Pacific, and has more varied topography and climate. Consequently the northeastern part of this continent has been a major destination for hundreds of millions of destitute Asian and African environmental refugees. While net greenhouse gas emissions have plummeted to zero (and with the introduction of continuous worldwide CO2 sequestration projects around 2200, gone slightly negative), average global temperatures continue to increase, despite an already catastrophic rise of ~6.5-7 C since the late 19th-century. The slow but inexorable sea level rise has long since inundated many major coastal population centers, and the Earth's biodiversity has been irreversibly decimated.

This world's Post-Columbian history is noticeably different from our timeline but the basis, spread, and relative influence of major civilizations of this world are the same as ours. The discovery of the New World, colonialism, slavery, industrialization, and world war still shape the course of this world's history, as do the rampant overpopulation, anthropogenic climate change, environmental degradation, and maladaptive technological progress of the last century. The economic and technological development of the Global South occurs ~20-30 years earlier than in our world- however world population growth rates are similar to that of our corresponding recent past, leading to a ballooning world population and skyrocketing human impact on the biosphere. Although this world was arguably better equipped to cope with exceeding carrying capacity around the year 2000, the greater acceleration of greenhouse gas emissions and earlier onset of climate change forestalled a technological singularity that could've eased the transition to a sustainable, healthy post-hydrocarbon world economy. While no singularity could've avoided the massive population decline and economic collapse of the 21st century, continued technological progress and sociopolitical restructuring allowed the global population to stabilize at 1-1.5 billion with at least 80% people worldwide having access to water, food, shelter, work, internet, and a basic education by the mid-to-late 22nd century.

However, the establishment of a new "eco-sustainable" global order came accompanied with systematically institutionalized racism, religious fundamentalism, government corruption, drug addiction, and other dystopian social phenomena all too reflective of the Hydrocarbon Age that foresaw these problems and its downfall that entrenched them. The way Jamilkhuze has responded to this post-apocalyptic world largely reflects my personal political ideals/beliefs applied within the constraints of NationStates. Initially an eco-socialist hybrid regime distinguished by a lack of corruption and a commitment to interculturalism, Jamilkhuze has since evolved in various directions that aren't fully consistent with any one political philosophy or ideology.
