Before the reformation the only ones with money was the church so they sponsored innovation for a while. After the reformation the middle class also grew a lot so there was more innovation

Mixed. In medical science, not really. Although they were really good at caring for patients. Not so good treating them. They believed Galen for so long and anyone that opposed it, with stuff that is true and is helpful, got punished. This went on for hundreds of years.

So in terms of medical science, the church really impeded the progress.
