Become more liberal or authoritarian within your civil rights/ economic/ political policies.

I think change is slow, but I changed from liberal democratic socialist nation to democratic socialist by becoming more authoritarian with my civil rights I believe.

I keep flipping from Left-Wing Utopia to Civil Rights Lovefest, it's pretty funny. Also finally got Proportional Representation, which is nice. I really like seeing all the parties in parliament in countries which have PR, they're sometimes some really wacky ones.

My economy just reached Powerhouse

Meet A Nation Interview

In this edition, we have the distinct pleasure to sit down and talk with an Islander who has been with us for a long time but only recently returned from a few years absence. Controlitia has in the past served in TITO Command and on the Council of Nine and currently serves as the newly elected Senator for New Republica South and as a TITO Knight.

GK: To start things off, do you have an earliest memory of XKI? If not, do you remember how you joined NS/XKI?

Control: I don’t really have a concrete earliest memory, but I do remember how I joined both NS and XKI. I joined NS because I came across Lexicon in a public library and liked it. When I looked into Max Barry more, I found out about NationStates. I played it for a bit and then started to get bored with just the one nation (Fosfjapias, named by keysmashing) and created a couple puppets to try for specific government types. One of those puppets got a recruiting telegram from Markanite that included some information about TITO, so I sent that puppet to XKI to join in and all of a sudden it was my main.

GK: So what made you decide to come back to NS after being away for a few years?

Control: I thought about checking in on XKI after years away due to the pandemic, but I rejoined because I wasn’t in college anymore. One of the main reasons that I CTE’d was that I was busy with schoolwork and clubs and such and didn’t have much time for NationStates. I was also usually in class at minor and doing homework or hanging out with friends at major, so I didn’t even have TITO to drive involvement. Now that I work a desk job, I can be around a lot more.

GK: Can you talk about some of the major changes you've noticed in XKI since returning?

Control: One thing that struck me was that politics have gotten more active. In my experience, XKI politics were broadly run along the lines of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and people didn’t really look to change much. Politics are much more active today and people are actively looking for things that we can improve and innovate on. You can also see a change in tone from the comments in my yaffice; it’d be a lot harder to see Barry going around and pretending to bribe senators today. It’s also odd to be in an XKI without Grub.

GK: And what about things that haven't changed? Do you feel like there are some aspects of XKI that have pretty much stayed the same?

Control: I feel like Taco Island has not changed much. Still spammy, still fun. XKI as a whole is as welcoming and laid back as ever. I don’t feel like TITO has changed all that much either, which works for me 😉

GK: I have to ask, with your extensive past work in TITO as a Knight and former member of Command, how does it feel to be back in action?

Control: It’s good to be back in the saddle and working to protect the people of NationStates from unconscionable griefing.

GK: And do you have any sage words of wisdom as an experienced player to newer nations?

Control: NationStates is what you make of it, so get involved but don’t overcommit. It’ll be boring if you let it be boring, it’ll be overwhelming if you get overinvolved. Find your sweet spot and it’s a great game.

GK: Lastly, can you describe XKI in a single word?

Control: Welcoming.

WTF, I am confused... what happened?

I've killed religion in my nation

Last week I received a telegram from “World Assembly Global Logistics”. The message was just one line:

Our observers noted that your nation was banned from Oneid by Oneid.

Anyone have any idea what that’s all about?

Looks like a fairly recent region, and they're opening embassies with anyone who says 'yes'. It's possible you declined an embassy invite from them, which would make your nation name appear in their 'Regional Happenings'. As long as your nation appears in that feed on their region page, you are subject to the Founder's administrative powers (Border Control) and you can be banned from that region - even if you've never visited it. When you get banned from a region, you get a TG from NS letting you know.

Looks like the ban was reversed shortly after you made your post here, so it's possible they have a puppet in P115 as well.

Kolominia wrote:WTF, I am confused... what happened?

As 10000 Islands' emissary to P115 (we share a 9+ year embassy), I share XKI's monthly emissary report in this region. It's pretty common between embassy partners.

Banning a nation for rejecting an embassy? How silly.

Central Kadigan, if you don't want to bother even rejecting an embassy, you can just do nothing. The request expires and disappears after a while.

Here's a graph: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/NationStates#/media/File%3AUpdated_NS_Graph.svg

The changes from one nation type to another usually happen more frequently in the beginning, when issue results have more impact.

Or, if you're on the border between one nation type and another, just answering an issue or two can make the nation flicker back and forth across that threshold.

100 days as regional delagte. Term 2 (with a break, call me Gerry Brown). It has been marked within the game sense, at any rate, as a mass influx of new nations, many of which have remained and been and I hope continue to be amazing. We have stopped actively recruiting for the time being, and as a result, saw our numbers swell, and as with many new things, people try and leave - resulting in a large dip. The good news, I hope the regional numbers have stabilised. Perhaps again, soon, we shall look again at a second campaign to recruit. However, the most effective way costs dolla dolla, which for time being, I refuse to spend ;).

In other news, I have been wonderfully busy in life's many pursuits. Stay safe (which is too often said these days).

REGIONAL DISCUSSION

In other news, what is everyones thoughts on an election cycle for the WAD? I am thinking as a means to garner interest in the region, and importantly, for the WAD to have the time to commit a little. As priorities change and life becomes busy and slow (depending) it may assist in the role and with the region. Would require a general push from the WA members to remove some votes and place them elsewhere every say... three months? Just a thought. Happy to put it to a vote next poll in a few days time. Just general thoughts the now?

I think an election cycle is a great idea! But if it requires for a lot of people to take away WA votes from all nations, I think it would be very difficult to implement, at least region-wise. Maybe elect the WAD from a poll or a third-party option and then advice everyone who voted for the winner to endorse him/her? Just throwing an idea, I'm still pretty new to all this!

Telgan and The rose

Regarding the Poll - not exactly binge watching but watching a show or two most nights:

Making our way through Deep Space 9 on Netflix (in Season 5)
Also watching Discovery on CBS all access (mid-way through Season 2)
And watching The Expanse on Amazon (started Season 4)

There seems to be a theme there but I can't figure it out. For a change of pace, we did watch all of the Schitt's Creek shows on Netflix.

Poll: I don't have netflix! :D But I swear I do have a computer of sorts. I actually still own and borrow DVDs, and lend DVDs to friends and neighbours.

On WAD elections:

6 month terms or longer seem much more fitting for the region. 3 months are awfully short in NationStates time, especially for humans who work/study/take care of children/volunteer etc. and have other entertainment interests beyond this online game - which is much more desirable than the phenomenon you sometimes come across of one trick ponies, whose free time appears to revolve around NationStates. A 6 month term provides enough time for the endorsement shuffle necessary to get an elected nation effectively into place. 6 months would allow a person to read and get somewhat familiar with the mechanisms and tropes, while hopefully remaining above the WA bickering, lying, sycophancy and chest thumping. Negative for Philosophy 115 would be a delegate who gets easily roped into shady crap because they think they have to produce 'achievements' and 'pull their weight' interregionally before their short term is over. Negative for Philosophy 115, I believe, would be any delegate anxious to 'make an impact' within a short time frame. They'd be much more susceptible to fall for ploys from manipulators. These, sadly, abound in the WA arena. Positive for Philosophy 115 would be a delegate who doesn't need to scratch backs, because they have no interest in having their back scratched. Positive for Philosophy 115 would be a delegate with at least 6 months term and no external or internal pressure, except an expectation to sort-of-regularly vote.

Candidates could make it part of their platform how they would decide their votes. 1. Conscience. Easiest: WAD votes according to their own conscience. Optional: They post about how they have voted, and why. 2. Referendum. More complicated: WAD regularly posts new resolutions and takes directions from majority of WA members by means of polls etc. Which is a lot of effort, and in other regions you can see that responses are not always abundant. You can see that often, members are much more interested in using the RMB for other conversation subjects than the latest WA-whatever. 3. Conscience plus soliciting input. Compromise: WAD posts on RMB 'At present I'm voting for/against X, but am open to change, please post your opinions/arguments.' Drawback of last option: Delegate has to log in again within a short time frame to read input and possibly change their vote. All variants have advantages and drawbacks. Candidates should state which variant they can realistically deliver, or whether it's going to be a mix.

Active suffrage in election: Nations with WA membership in Philosophy 115. No exceptions. Otherwise, I could make 10 more puppets and get 11 votes. Must have maintained continual WA membership in Philosophy 115 for 30 days (or more?) at start of election.

Passive suffrage in election: Nations with continual WA membership in Philosophy 115 maintained for a minimum of 1 year at start of election. Makes sure that candidates are already a bit familiar with the site rules (prevents embarrassment), the jargon, the administrative mechanisms, the types of resolutions, the region and its members. Shows a commitment to the region. Keeps away showy busybodies with short attention spans.

Why on earth do I have all sorts of opinions on WA elections, if I have such a low opinion of WA interaction? I like the region Philosophy 115, and would like it to enact safeguards, so that people can have fun with democratic elections while keeping out a few of the most unpleasant NationStates phenomena.

Hi guys, I'm just on here to ask for some advice.

I have a really bad issue with employment in my country (I have an employment rate of less than 50%!!!). Are there any specific things I can do to try and help with this issue?

Thanks guys :)

If employement is a goal, look for issues which nationalises the state economy and left wing policies. I have had high 90 per cent employment rates with policies which were focused on say the category of so called socialism or how this game classified it. The bonus with that is that it has no effect on the enviorment which some policies do such as mining which increases economic growth but destroys enviormental beauty.

Speaking as a capitalistic nation...

It seems that your government controls more than half of the economy. An increased federal responsibility means less responsibility to the individual. If your nation is involved in a lot of welfare systems (which is only what I have guessed from viewing your nation's information), some of your citizens may not feel as motivated to change their ways, since the government gives them money without really doing anything.

In terms of the game, however, slashing welfare doesn't appear to lead to higher employment. Your economy is quite good overall, but your employment rate is only 75%. I haven't looked into it that carefully, but the game mechanics appear to favor heavy government involvement in business.

There appears to be little in the way of any meaningful or significant correlation of state welfare to employmenet in the sense of a negative correlation - one goes up, the other goes down or vice versa. I suppose if welfare was 100 per cent contingent on unemployment then absolutely, we would - most definitely - see that. That seems, to me, a very tough and outrageous manner to form a welfare system. Even most capitalists would agree, even the the most committed to that ideological system. That said, I am sure some unthinking, amalgamated capitalist-eugenicists may "think" otherwise.
