Thomas “Tom” Duane Boozman (May 22, 1939) is a Ramstadian politician. A member of the Popular Party, he is a current member of the House of Delegates, who represents the Capitalia’s 23rd district since 2004. He served as the leader of the Popular party House of Delegates members from 2007 to 2017
He is married since 1962 with Barbara Ann Leahy, former mayor of Ramstad City from 2000-2005.
Early Life, education, and career
Boozman was born in Ramstad City, Capitalia, the third of four sons. His father committed suicide with a gunshot to the head in 1972, at age 58, when Tom was 32 years old. He attended Central High School, where he played football, and was an amateur boxer. He graduated from National Ramstadian University in Political Science and obtained a master’s degree in International Relationships from Central University.
After graduation, Boozman started working as a university professor. While working there, he met his future wife, Barbara Ann Leahy, a student at the time and Boozman’s student.
In 1975, Boozman decided to run for Mayor of Ramstad City and easily won the general election by a double digit margin. He served one term (1975-1980) and did not seek re-election.
In 1985, Seventh District Congressman Ed Royce fell into a coma three days before the 1985 election. He was reelected, but it soon became apparent that he would never regain consciousness, and Congress declared her seat vacant by resolution in October 1985. Boozman narrowly won a crowded seven-way Popular Party-primary, beating Royce's wife Karen by only 475 votes. He then defeated a better funded National Republican candidate, Jennifer Wells, in the December 15 special election by 39%-37%. In the 1988 general election, Boozman won re-election to his first full term with 75% of the vote.
Prior to the 2005 census, Capitalia had only 20 Electoral Districts, but in the 1990’s the population grew significantly and caused that the Districts’ boundaries be redrawn. His district was renumbered the 23rd District after the 2005 Census redistricting. He has been reelected five times since then without much difficulty.
Boozman succeeded Peter Burton as minority leader in 2007 following Burton’s resignation. Boozman left the leadership in 2017 to pursue his party nomination for the presidency. He was succeeded by Allison Chapman, a Delegate from Commerce’s 16th District.
In 1962, Boozman married his girlfriend, Landra Gould, a former student of his. They have five children: two daughters (Danielle & Michelle) and three sons (Thomas Jr., Roy, & Sebastian).
Boozman and his family reside in the Pressler neighborhood of Ramstad City, Capitalia.
