Investigation into the 02/24 N-Day mixup

The facts accumulated:
1. Two separate factions, Almighty Nukes and Yggsdrasil Security Coalition were founded during the prep period for N- Day.
2. YSC proposed a merge, but I didn't see it until the second day of N-Day. *forgets to check telegrams daily*
3. By that point Almighty Nukes had been obliterated by the YSC, although not without fairly stiff resistance. (Special thanks to the greek letter cardfarmer?)
4. When I got on at the beginning of N-Day, I targeted the YSC because they had targeted (and begun nuking) us, and had "Target: Almighty Nukes" in their faction description.

The questions:
Q. Who targeted and fired upon who first?
A. Unknown at present

Q. Could this have been avoided?
A. Definitely. If I'd seen Wisteria's TG I would either have agreed to join the YSC, or at the very least have proposed a non aggression pact between them and Almighty Nukes.
