When The One, Eru Ilúvatar, first created the Earth, Arda as we call it, with it he crafted two peoples which were hence named the Children of Ilúvatar. Those two were the Quendi, the Eldar, or Elves as some call them, and the Men, or the Edain as the Eldar called some of them afterwards. To the Elves he gave them serial longevity; they could thus only be slain or die of grief, but to the Men he gave the Gift of Ilúvatar: death, or fate as some call it.
