Cavernia

Cavernia

Overview

Cavernia is a sandbox video game developed by the Solaryí video game developer Grobrza. In Cavernia the player can create their own custom character from a variety of species, which then spawn in a randomly generated world. The world is finite, however the player can unlock more later on in the game, and in every world the player is able to extract raw materials and manipulate the environment, as well as create their own structures. As the player advances, they unlock more advanced technology (called Tekni in-game), along with more difficult enemies. Eventually they can unlock the Starship, which allows the player to both visit more randomly generated worlds and access Multiplayer Mode. There is little to no campaign in the game, as it was intended to be open world, however there is a series of 28 bosses that ascend in difficulty, which are dangerous fights but can prove very rewarding upon the players victory. Gamemodes in the game can range from Utopia (Very Easy), a mode with no enemies, infinite health, and all technologies unlocked, to Middag (Normal), where the world spawns with a moderate amount of resources and the player has to unlock Teknis, to Mareritt (Very Hard), in which enemy health and spawning rates are increased, and the starting planet is near barren of resources.

Gameplay

Cavernia is a 2D sandbox game in which the player is fully able to manipulate their environment, with every item and material breakable. There are no set goals in the game and the player can go in whatever direction they wish, however there is an optional system of bosses, culminating in the final boss, The Cosmic Horror. There is also an optional achievement system in which players are rewarded for exploring, combat, unlocking Teknis, and building.
When first opening the game, the player creates their own custom character from 10 different starting species, ranging from humans, to elves, to even dragons, all of which give the player different bonuses depending on which they choose. Players can also customize a character's colours and individual features, as well as clothes. The player then spawns on a procedurally generated planet, first known as Homeworld (although players can customize the names of all planets), which is a Temperate type world. Once the player unlocks the Starship later in the game, they’re able to visit other worlds of 12 differing classifications, such as Desert, Oceanic, Nightmare, and Apocalypse. However, the player first has to unlock and build the Starship, which is part of the Teknis system.

The Teknis system is a system by which the player advances through different ages and unlocks new Teknis, which grant new items and mechanics for players to use as they explore the world.

-Update 1.3.2: The Green Update
"Brought to you with the help of the Western Isles Climate Response Council, we bring you The Green Update! This update brings you a wide array of new flora and fauna to populate your worlds, such as the beautiful Purpleberry Orchid and Luxidoor Peacock! However, not everything is peaceful, with new mobs such as the dangerous Electric Gliding Snake and Thorntrap Weeds, which are sure to make exploring far more risky. In addition, many new items have been added to the game, such as solar panels and windmills, which can provide your late game builds with a clean, renewable source of energy. You can experience all of this and more once The Green Update comes out on August first!"
