Hobbes Dystopia

The Post-Human Coalition of Hobbes Dystopia is a technocratic democracy located in north Forest. It borders Plifte to the south, Newvigen and Canaltia to the west, untamed wilderness to the east and ocean to the north.

Most residents live in or around the massive geo-synchronous orbital cities. These are home to the bulk of Hobbesian human assets with only a small, dwindling minority still residing in the countryside.

Hobbes Dystopia seeks to promote and uphold the values of [DATA CORRUPTED] Libertarian Post-Humanism throughout the known world and, in the future, the Cosmos. It is not part of any supranational body, although Hobbes Dystopia maintains good relations with most of them, and tries to be as self-reliant as possible.

Hobbes Dystopia t is well known for it's citizens Anti-Nihilism, extremist anti-luddism and bright green environmentalism. Hobbes Dystopia is an economic powerhouse, having eagerly adopted the "green new deal" during the so-called Green rebirth that saw the nation implementing the bulk of it's present day environmental protection policies. Hobbes Dystopia is divided into five states: Hume, Hobbes, Russel, Heraclitus and Dewey with a great amount of autonomy.

Geography
Hobbes Dystopia is divided in five states and twenty four regions. The states serve no administrative purpose, but play an important role in the people's self identity. The highest temperature ever recorded was 48 °C in Måav, deep in the centre of the south, while the coldest temperature ever recorded was −52.6 °C in Mount Newton, the highest peak of the galileo mountain range.

Northern Hobbes Dystopia has a subartic clima, being partially covered by tundra forests. It usually has very cold winters (reaching −50 °C), and short, cool to mild summers (up to 26º C). With 6 consecutive months where the average temperature is below freezing, all moisture in the soil and subsoil freezes solidly to depths of many feet. Summer warmth is insufficient to thaw more than a few surface feet, so permafrost prevails under most areas not near the southern boundary of this climate zone.

Typically, in the north there is little precipitation, no more than 380 mm (15 in) over an entire year. Away from the coasts, precipitation occurs mostly in the warmer months, while in coastal areas the heaviest precipitation is usually during the autumn months when the relative warmth of sea vis-à-vis land is greatest. The northern Dystopia is covered by LinkTaiga forests.

Southern Hobbes Dystopia presents a striking contrast to the north, being entirely of tropical savanna climate. It has a lengthy dry season (7-8 months) and a short wet season where it receives just enough precipitation to preclude it from a semi-arid climate classification. This region is dominated by grass and/or shrubs with some scattered trees. The South is covered, thus, by a LinkTropical savanna

Biodiversity
For more on wildlife see Here

Since the northern and southern climates are very different, the fauna in each region is also usually not present in the other (although there is an area of overlap). It should be noted that, many species survived the dawn of the pleistocene and the arrival of humans. Although some animals like the LinkDire wolf went extinct, most survived.

In the north, the taiga is home to a relatively small variety of animals, includes 85 species of mammals, 130 species of fish, and an estimated 32,000 species of insects, due to it's harsh conditions. Insects play a critical role as pollinators, decomposers, and as a part of the food web. Many nesting birds rely on them for food in the summer months. The cold winters and short summers make the taiga a challenging biome for reptiles and amphibians, which depend on environmental conditions to regulate their body temperatures, and there are only a few species in the boreal forest.

Nonetheless it is home to a number of large herbivorous mammals, such as moose and a smaller version of LinkStephanorius. The largest animal in the taiga is the LinkSteppe bison. Many large carnivores also dwell in the taiga, such as the grey wolves, brown bear and the LinkEpicyon Haydeni.

The southern regions have more bidiversity, containing around 3,400 plant species, 500 birds, 150 mammals, and 220 reptiles and amphibians. The southern region ecosystems include riverine forests, wetlands and savannas. Animals typically associated with tropical and subtropical forests are often found throughout the wetlands, including jaguars, howler monkeys and tapirs. On the drier areas, mammals such as the serval, guanaco, kahutan lion (similar to the Linkcave lion), and the Linktoxodon.

In terms of avian wildlife, torrent duck, giant coot, flamingos, lesser rhea, mountain-toucans, egyptian vulture and some humming birds are the most common. There are also large flightless birds like the LinkGeyornis. In terms of reptiles, the most well known (and feared) are the Komodo dragon, wich lives in the savannas and the gigantic (but rare) LinkTitanoboa.

The Dystopia is crossed by many rivers, the biggest of which is the Huygens river, and, as such, id home to a wide variety of aquatic or semi aquatic species. Notable among them are the spectacled caiman, beaver, common snapping turtle and the giant otter.

Culture

Hobbes Dystopia has adopted the concept of orbital-cities to improve the citizen's lifespan and worldview. The countryside to be turned into natural reserves and no go zones for humans (except researchers and automated guardians). Each city is governed by a city covenant, and most of the issues that the city faces are solved through popular democracy.

Hobbes Dystopia uses a civil legal system, wherein law arises primarily from written statutes; judges are not to make law, but merely to interpret it (though the amount of judicial interpretation in certain areas makes it equivalent to case law in a common law system). In agreement with the principles of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, law should only prohibit actions detrimental to society.

Hobbesian law is divided into two principal areas: private law and public law. Private law includes, in particular, civil law and criminal law. Public law includes, in particular, administrative law and constitutional law. However, in practical terms, the law comprises three principal areas of law: civil law, criminal law, and administrative law.

Criminal laws can only address the future and not the past (criminal ex post facto laws are prohibited). On the topic of cuisine, breakfasts typically consist of flatbread and insects (mainly fried ants), occasionally with some variety of boiled eggs or cheese. Midday meals are often similar to breakfast, though often include many different kinds of fresh vegetables grown on the city walls and hydrophonic farms, while evening meals usually include some small portion of vat-grown meat or fish served with some combination of sweet coffee bread, oat products, legumes, potatoes.

As for written language, the native hobbesians use pictographic and ideographic writing, augmented by phonetic rebuses and syllabic signs/logograms. The ideographic nature of the writing is apparent in abstract concepts, such as night, drawn as a black sky and a closed eye; war, by a shield and a club; and speech, illustrated as a little scroll issuing from mouth of the person who is talking. The concepts of motion and walking are indicated by a set of dashes below a foot and two legs set in running position, respectively. A glyph can be used to represent a different word with the same sound or similar pronunciation. This is especially evident in the glyphs of town names. Hobbesian Glyphs do have a set reading order, and if they are read in a direction which is not the expected one, they won't form the correct sound values. Because of this, there is, in the begining of any text, a small javelin-symbol telling the right direction.

Factions
This section deals with habitat level factions. For macro-factions see Here

  • Synchronity Conventicle: The Synchronity Conventicle is a society managed by the "cicadas", a clique of anarchists, utopian socialists and artists who seek to eschew the human body as a way to transcend the feeble physical boundaries it poses. They are also quite concerned on how the natural world will develop after the centuries-long human led ecocide, having sworn to act as guardians to the Hobbesian ecosystem. They usually upload their brains to a Virtual conventicle where the different minds intermingle and separate themselves as they pursue peak human potential. When forced to interact with the physical world they use primitive drones and non-sapient servobots. All of the energy their cities and mainframe consume is generated by the Herculea Network of Solar Panels orbiting the Earth.

  • Symbiont Liberation Front: The Symbiont Liberation front is an eerie and mysterious faction which advocates for the atonement of humanity's past crimes against the environment by merging with it. They are the only faction not to live on the orbiting cities, instead transplanting their minds to the ecosystem themselves. They engineer a huge network of organisms based on the mycelium and pollinator insects to create a sapient ecosystem in which every tree, every plant, every animal is part of a greater mind. The links between the neurons (the different organisms) are assured by the insects which spread elaborated chemical signs, allowing for the formation of a huge sapient network embedded in the ecosystem itself. They have done quite a bit of Bio-engineering themselves, and have a few "pets" they like to present to those who intrude in their domain.

  • Edenist Crusade: The Edenist Crusade is a bright green, terraformist faction which advocates for the radical reshaping of Earth's ecosystems to correct all past human mistakes and create a paradise-like world. They are the ones who bring long dead species back to the realm of the living by the use genetic engineering. They are themselves heavily gen-modified, having improved their bodies and minds through genetic modification. Their floating cities use chemosynthesis by truck-sized bio-reactors to power themselves. They organise themselves by a kind of lotocracy.

  • Prophets of Gaia: the Prophets of Gaia are self-banished esoteric types who made the Mother Citadel, an underwater city off the coast of the dystopia, their home after swearing to never again desecrate the sacred earth mother's soil with their presence. But from below they keep an watchful eye on the Hobbesian ecosystems and are always ready to send one of their Guardian-Tombs to protect the great ocean from those who seek to desecrate it. To them church and state are one and the same, being led by the Covenant of Truth, a selection of believers chosen by an algorithm by virtue of their devotion to the cause and achievements on it's service.

  • Maker Network:

Military

The Hobbesian armed Doctrine is one of total defense. A series of forts and operating bases, with appropriate supply depots and routes have been built and maintained, with most extending underground and connecting to the population centres through launching pads situated deep in the central range. Air bases and patrols are more common, supported by drones which are produced and operated by the different factions (which also occasionally use them to fight internal wars).

A mixture of land and seat forts cover the northern coastline. The south's few water sources are heavily fortified to protect them from serving as enemy bases in the event of an invasion. The military forces themselves are on the hands of the factions. The Synchronity Conventicle is responsible for the aerial defence of Hobbes Dystopia, with their drone swarms and advanced "physical firewall" (an Iron-dome like missile system) being deployed if the Dystopia is threatened from above.

When an enemy sets foot on Hobbesian soil, it's the Symbionts and Edenists who are called upon to defend their land. The Symbionts have quite a few bio-engineered creatures who, controlled by their natural neural network, are pretty capable of slowing down the enemy using irregular warfare tactics. The Edenists provide the human manpower (genetically modified soldiers), and targeted viral infections with deadly accuracy. If it's by Sea the opposing nation invades, first they must pass through the submarine fortress that is the Mother Citadel and it's fanatical defenders: the Prophets of Gaia.
