REGIONAL HAPPENINGS

A President By and For the People

By Oseia || Monday, Mar. 15 || 1925 PST

In late January, the People’s Republic of Wintercrest held its first ever election for the office of President of the Workers Party. The Independent States of Allied Forces (ISAF) ran unopposed and won as a result (no, he didn’t scare anyone into not running).. A long time member of and contributor to Wintercrest, The ISAF held several government roles including Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Defense/Defense District Governor, and Revolutionary Leader. Among his campaign promises were to increase foreign relations with current allies while establishing new ones at the same time, increasing the regional population, creating an active community with regional events, and overall increase Wintercrest’s standing globally. Halfway through the 2nd month of his term, it looks as though he is making good on some of those promises, though there is room for improvement.

...Of course, if he didn’t improve, it would be Dance Dance Revolution time!

In an interview with the Revolutionary Daily, The ISAF said “Listen, we have a region full of bright minds and enthusiastic people. It’s all about getting those people involved in our government. You just need to find a way to motivate them. Like I said in my inauguration speech, change can not occur without sustained effort and an unprecedented level of commitment.”

With over 4 months left in his term, we look forward to seeing what the ISAF and his cabinet have in store for the People’s Republic.

"Haha, Beach Go Boom"

By The Bris Lucho || Monday, Mar. 12 || 1722 PST

On January 15th, Wintercrest participated in an Operation that aimed to make NationStates history. This is an account of Operation Boom Beach, as told by The ISAF, Defense District Governor at the time of the Operation.

“On December 30th, I was approached by Serge (Also known as Libertanny) from The East Pacific, one of Wintercrest's allies. He asked if we did raiding, to which I replied "Only on fascist regions, but go on." He proceeded to give a synopsis of what is now known as Operation Boom Beach basically saying "We're trying to beat the record for most raiders during an update, you want in?" I said I would check with Morograd, our Revolutionary Leader (at the time, I was the Governor of Defense). Moro gave the ok and I entered the server, being roled as one of the commanding officers. A ton of regions were involved. I like to be thorough, so bear with me as I list them all: Balder, Caer Sidi, Europeia, Kantrias, Lily, Lone Wolves United, New Pacific Order, NSUK, Osiris, Thaecia, The Black Hawks, The East Pacific, The Land of Kings and Emperors, The North Pacific, The West Pacific, Warzone Asia, Wintercrest, as well as assorted militias/independent nations.

For Wintercrest, we had several nations participate. Uponda, Morograd, Asmista, IUSR, Quenbat, Me (The ISAF). It was a very fun experience and I'd definitely do it again in a heartbeat. In total, we raided 3 regions (if my memory serves) and we also defended Warzone Asia.

The best part for me was how we came up with the name Operation Boom Beach. In the server, there's a bot that does trivia and one of the categories was "Boom Beach". Nobody knew what the heck that was (Turns out it was a fairly popular mobile game) and we had fun trying to guess answers that we had no idea about. When it came time to select an operation name, I put forth "Boom Beach" slightly joking. The rest is history. The Operation was an overwhelming success. I mean, Wintercrest and others involved made history. Obviously, it was a team effort and couldn't have been done without the numerous other regions and nations who joined. Huge thank you to Serge for inviting us in the first place.”

"In Solidarity We Walk"

By The Independent State Allied Force || Tuesday, Mar. 16 || 1939 PST

Over the past month and a half, Wintercrest has opened relations with several regions, including The Social Liberal Union and The Socialist Syndicalist Union. Our ever growing spy network has intercepted communications that Wintercrest has applied to be a member of the NSLeft. From their NS page, NSLeft describes itself as “an alliance uniting left-wing regions for purposes of building inter-regional solidarity amongst comrades, and general advancement of the left-wing cause within NationStates. To this end, it features common forums for inter-regional communication, an organizational newspaper, internal workgroups dedicated to writing World Assembly resolutions, as well as national issues, and active participation in military gameplay.” Your fearless writer The Independent State Allied Force (No relation to the President of Wintercrest) took to climbing through the bedroom window of one Courelli (of the SLU) and interviewing them. In short, Courelli said the overall reception of the vote happening was positive. A concern of whether old animosity between The Communist Bloc and Wintercrest over the Zenny - Piper era would impact the vote was quickly dismissed, with Courelli saying “through my conversations with TCB members, it seems like that conflict is long behind us all now.”

Yearning for more gossip information, I also interrupted our Revolutionary Leader Morograd's dinner. It was delicious. Citing NSLeft as where all “the cool leftist cats” are, Morograd said Wintercrest is a prominent Leftist region that should add their hand to the pact of solidarity. When asked about TCB and if he felt there was any resentment still residing about Zenny, Morograd said he felt that there's obviously some elements of Zenny hate still persistent if brought up, but that there are more and more comrades who realize Zenny has changed and moved on from what is now the past.. However, he went on to say that he’s done his best to build a bridge with the comrades in TCB and that Zenny herself even came back to “bury the hatchet.” To cap off the interview, Morograd stated “It would be a missed opportunity if we don't get voted in by the representatives, however I believe we have a good chance. We attempt to learn, understand, and teach Socialism more than some of the other regions who get voted down. We might have a more liberal point when it comes to who we let in, but we are not a meme region.”

NOT ALL COMRADES WEAR CAPES

Paul Robeson: April 9, 1898 – January 23, 1976

Activist,

Singer,

Athlete,

and Actor

Paul Leroy Robeson was an American bass baritone concert artist and stage and film actor who became famous both for his cultural accomplishments and for his political activism. Educated at Rutgers College and Columbia University, he was a star athlete in his youth. He also studied Swahili and phonetics at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London in 1934. His political activities began with his involvement with unemployed workers and anti-imperialist students whom he met in Britain and continued with support for the Republican cause in the Spanish Civil War and his opposition to fascism. In the United States he became active in the Civil Rights Movement and other social justice campaigns. His sympathies for the Soviet Union and for communism, and his criticism of the United States government and its foreign policies, caused him to be blacklisted during the McCarthy era.

Robeson's political philosophies and outspoken views about domestic and international Communist countries and movements were the subject of great concern to the western mass media and the United States Government, during the Cold War. His views also caused controversy within the ranks of black organizations and the entertainment industry.

Robeson may have been subject to the CIA's Project MKUltra, which conducted experiments on humans that were intended to identify and develop drugs and procedures to be used in interrogations in order to weaken the individual and force confessions through brainwashing and psychological torture. In Moscow, Robeson attempted to commit suicide during a surprise party after suffering hallucinations and severe depression. Robeson’s son, Paul Robeson, Jr., has investigated his father’s illness for more than 30 years. He believed that his father was slipped a synthetic hallucinogen called BZ by US intelligence operatives at the party. The party was hosted by anti-Soviet dissidents funded by the CIA.

Robeson Jr. visited his father in the hospital the day after the suicide attempt. Robeson told his son that he felt extreme paranoia and thought that the walls of the room were moving. He said he had locked himself in his bedroom and was overcome by a powerful sense of emptiness and depression before he tried to take his own life.

Robeson left Moscow for London, where he was admitted to Priory Hospital. There he was turned over to psychiatrists who forced him to endure 54 electro-shock treatments. At the time, electro-shock, in combination with psycho-active drugs, was a favored technique of CIA behavior modification. It turned out that the doctors treating Robeson in London and, later, in New York were CIA contractors.
