The Gardener's Gazette, edition 9

The Gardener's Gazette

Welcome to the ninth edition of the The Gardener's Gazette, a monthly newspaper with the purpose of keeping both gardeners and guests informed on the happenings within the Card Gardening Society.

Garden Insight
by Giovanniland

As you might already know, this article reports interesting happenings in the Gardens during the month before the one our edition is actually published in. Here you can read about all that happened in February in a few paragraphs!

In the Gardens' main chat, called The Greenhouse, there were discussions about several themes related to cards, NationStates, and real life. Of course, the upcoming release of season 3 continued to be a major card-related topic discussed by Gardeners, with some members presenting the theory that it would never come while others hoped for it to come soon (April 1st was the date guessed by some) and prepared their nations for when it happens. Another interesting topic were the way farmers organize and keep track of their card farmer puppets. Some Gardeners have built elaborate spreadsheet with lists of puppets together with stats about each nation's bank, number of cards, packs, and deck value, although this is not the case for all members.

Like previous months, activity also happened in the Toolshed and the Garden Displays channels. The former was active with new members asking for help with scripts and some coders also testing new features, while in the latter some Gardeners posted impressive completed collections—for example Fauzjhia's collection of every legendary and the regional collections from The West Pacific and South Pacific built by Giovanniland and The unified missourtama states respectively. Meanwhile, the Farmers' Market featured discussions about pull events, inflations, deflations, and many other trades, along with posts advertising cards for sale.

Something else worth noting is the Gardens' relative success in the 2021 Card Awards organized as part of the Cards Symposium. Even though the Society wasn't able to win first place for any award, we did earn second place on the Indescribably and Irrevocably Irresistible category! Furthermore, the Gardener's Gazette also earned some nominations, but ultimately it lost to other publications such as the Monthly Snapshot and Card News. Finally, I give the monthly shout out to the Gardeners that joined the past month, namely Libertanny and Kursibar. Welcome both to the Gardens!

Winners of the Month
by Giovanniland

Last month saw an important change regarding giveaways, in which two Legendary cards are now given away per week due to an increasing number of donations by many Gardeners. In the month of February we can now see the full effects of this change on the number of giveaways, which rose to 12, but is still not the highest number that can be achieved because some months could have 13 or even 14 depending on which day they start.

Ten Gardeners won one Legendary card or Epic package each, and Recuecn was even luckier to win twice in a month with four Epic and eight Legendary giveaways. Below you can see the winners as usual, first ordered by number of wins and then by how early in the month they won a giveaway:

Monthly Contest Results and Update
by Giovanniland

For the past two months, Gardeners could enter in a Card Poetry Contest, first announced in January and later extended to February due to a lack of submissions. After the extension of the deadline until 23:59 EST of February 28th, submissions were sent by four different members—namely Evrigenis, Infinitecimal, Terra potestatem and Vylixan.

Once the deadline ended, all members of the Sub-Administrative Committee gathered to decide the winners! The judge team was composed by Destructive Government Economic System, Giovanniland, Noahs Second Country, The unified missourtama states and Recuecn, all of which brought different opinions to the judging table. After a very close vote with three votes for one poem and two votes for another, it was decided that the winner is… *drumroll*

Evrigenis, who earned the vote of three judges! Honorable mention to Vylixan, whose poem was also well-written and got the vote of the other two.

Congratulations! Both the winner and runner-up earned legendary cards, namely Mallorea and Riva for the 1st place and Otaku Stratus for the second place. Furthermore, the two other participants also won the Epic card Taineizbria. You can see all four submitted poems below:

Bare branches abound.
Alone I scrounge for crumbs; art
makes a meager meal.

Pink blossoms abound.
I ask to collect knowledge,
you answer my call.

Falling fruit abounds.
Our harvest is greater than
the sum of its parts.

When all becomes scarce,
I'll depart the garden, leave
my last words, and give
back more than I have taken...
I owe too many thank yous.

First came the issues, the strange questions;
Of beliefs and rights, That affected all nations.
From that packs spawned, containing 5 cards within;
Pick and choose which one you would like to save for Inf.

From this a leaderboard, on top was Koem Kab;
And also a discord, where collectors could confab.
And so it began, my card collecting scheme;
Do I go after number 1, or a collection based on a theme?

I began chasing cards by value, Sharking was discredit;
But I had no other way, of turning any profit.
Once I got lucky, pulled a 9003;
Sold it for it’s value, so much bank for me!

So with a skip in my step, I perverted my MV;
Going after low owner cards, inflating for DV.
Finally one early January day, I made it! I got to number 8!
My day went about gleefully, I knew it, it was only fate.

Then, one fateful day, two things happened, both terrible in their own way;
The sky fell on me leaving me helpless, to stop the atrocities leaving my DV far less.
From that day forward, I inflated no more;
Not that it’s wrong, but that I was just sore.

Felix oh Felix, you terrible boy;
Why’d you inflate? Was it worth the worry?
But no I’m not done, there’s so much to do;
In the expanse of NS, I’ll be waiting for you.

Dethrone the king, fire in the sky;
The economy will crash, the end will be nigh.
Why are you waiting? There’s much fun to be had;
Go out and explore, while it still lasts.

I really want to
Pull a legendary card
Its snowing on Mt. Fuji

Koem Kab Is my card god
He's who I might want to be
Not that I have a good shot
Because big farma is not me

That's because I like to collect many types of cards
In ever card channel there is a ping
I'm like one of the old bards
Singing songs about everything

Only in this case it's every type of card
In all their shapes and variations
There are none to be disregard
And they are hosted on many nations

I don't care about their value
Or about what my deck is worth
Or even what people say I can not do
Because many cards give me mirth

I also like to make scripts, tools and gadgets
To make my life a lot easier
here a line, there a fix or a few patches
It's a real effort multiplier

So this is what I like to do
Collect cards with intrinsic value
Hope you liked this poem a lot
Because rhyming is not my forte

Those were all the submissions! I hope you liked the poems, and a huge thank you for the Gardeners who submitted them. For this month, our monthly contest jumps from poetry to art in the form of a Card Design Contest! In this event players will be able to show their ideas about how the future season 3 cards should look, although this is of course run by players and those designs will not be used by the game admins. The winner will also receive a shiny legendary card as always! Here are the rules:

1. Designs can be either drawn digitally or by hand.
2. Only one design can be submitted per Gardener, this means one must remove their old entry if they wish to submit a new one.
2. Every submitted design must follow Card Gardens and NationStates rules.
3. Submission method: either a Discord DM or a telegram to Giovanniland with a link to the artwork.
4. Submissions close on 23:59 UTC of Friday, 2nd April. The winner will then be announced on the next Gazette edition following a Committee vote. Good luck!

Garden Anniversary: a Sneak Peek
by Giovanniland

The Card Gardening Society was officially founded by The unified missourtama states on the day of April 7th of 2020. This means that our cards organization will turn one year old in less than one month! There will be many celebrations, one of which is a special Gazette edition scheduled to be published on the anniversary day. Coincidentally, it will also be the 10th Gazette edition, which is a special milestone for us at the admin team. This edition will include a special monthly contest, the second edition of the Community Contribution Awards, and also the results of the Gardener of the Year award.

You might be asking yourself, what is the Gardener of the Year award? It will be a yearly honor given to the best Gardener and chosen by YOU—that's right, any Gardener can nominate! Each member of the Society can pick another member to receive this award except themselves and the administrators. The nominations must be sent to Giovanniland via Discord DM or a telegram until 23:59 EST of Friday, 2nd April (the same deadline as the contest above). Please write the name of your nomination's member nation in the Gardens, you can check in the rosters if you are unsure about which of their nations is registered here. Furthermore, it's also encouraged but not required to write a few words about the reason you think your choice should be the Gardener of the Year. After the deadline ends, the person with the most nominations will earn this coveted award.

See you all next month for another Gardener's Gazette edition. Credits to Giovanniland for leading the newspaper publication and writing the articles!
