The Cable - July 2020

_ PREAMBLE

Welcome to the second edition of The Cable, which aims to build communications between our embassies. You're encouraged to share this newsletter with your region-mates by posting a link on your RMB.

A manic May was followed by a jarring June. This month saw the demise of our peer region SECFanatics, one of the most notable "embassy collector" regions that NS has ever seen. This was followed by an opportunist offensive SC Liberation proposal, aimed at bringing down The Embassy. And then came the departure of our delegate Durcane. On a brighter note, our TourAdvisor project is growing at a steady pace, and we're getting some great insights on the wider NS-verse. Our polls looked at some real world events. NS agreed that Black Live Matter more than the Thin Blue Line. Then we predicted the Polish presidential election incorrectly, showing that, fifty-one years after the New York Stonewall riots, Pride still has a long road to travel.

But if you're just thinking, "I don't care about any of this. Why did I get a notification?", then this section is for you.

_ POLLS

In early June, reacting to the outrageous killing of George Floyd by police, protests and riots rocked America. By the time our poll closed, at least 200 cities had imposed curfew. Our "This or That" polls deliberately exclude explanations, middle-ground, or alternative solutions. A decisive 71% declared that Black Live Matter more than the Thin Blue Line.

In the Polish presidential elections, the leading candidates were existing president Andrzej Duda (whose recent attacks on “LGBT ideology” drew widespread criticism), and Rafał Trzaskowski, the liberal mayor of Warsaw. Large sections of Poland are deeply conservative, so although Duda tried to distance himself from some of the more extreme homophobic language, Trzaskowski tried to avoid firm declarations of support for LGBT rights. We asked who you thought would win (not who you'd like to win). NS predicted a win for the liberal Trzaskowski. However, on the 28th, Duda took 44% of the vote, and Trzaskowski 30%. There'll be a run-off on 12th July between the two. Will their fortunes reverse?

_ AN EMBASSY COLLECTOR - SECFANATICS

SECFanatics, as the name indicates, was never concieved as an embassy collector, but as a sports themed region. It was over a year after founding that the embassy count became a focus.

At it's peak, SECFanatics had an astounding 3126 embassies open, a record only ever beaten by The Embassy. Many regions CTE over time, so this peak doesn't reflect the full 6851 embassies that were opened through the years.

Much earlier, on 3 April 2018, The Embassy had set the record for most embassies ever, at 3055. The embassy count had then been left to decline. On 16 October 2018, with over 1800 embassies, SECFanatics took over as the region with most embassies. They held that position continuously until 11 January 2019, growing their embassy count to over 2500 in that time.

With a renewed surge of embassy building, The Embassy caught up on 11 January 2019. There followed weeks of jostling for position.

On 17 February, SECFanatics held 3009 embassies, 44 more than The Embassy, and looked set to beat that all time record of 3055 embassies. To keep the title, The Embassy tried a sneak tactic. Reasoning that regions who had relations with SECFanatics were likely to accept embassy requests, The Embassy targetted them, and gained enough new embassies to break the existing record on 18 February, just ahead of SECFanatics. SECFanatics went on to reach that incredible count of 3126 embassies on 28 February.

A year later, on 31 May 2020, founder RBBF's account was deleted by moderators for an unspecified reason, leaving SECFanatics open to raids. Shortly after, the region was raided, and all embassies closed.

_ LIBERATION

On 5th June, Jakker city drafted a proposal on the Security Council forum to Liberate The Embassy. A successful SC Liberation would have removed our regional password, leaving us vulnerable to raids. Jakker, who had headed up the raid on SECFanatics, was obviously just after a chance to destroy another embassy collector region.

In the proposal, Jakker said that the council should approve the Liberation because we had fascist regions amongst our embassies, and (as we had all available tags attached to our region) were tagged fascist. But it's a huge leap of imagination to believe that the proposal was driven by any genuine concerns over fascism.

We haven't been opening embassies with fascist regions for a very long time. We use a script to identify new regions to send embassy requests to. The script excludes regions tagged as fascist, and any that have "Nazi", "fascist", or "national socialist" in the name. Literally hundreds of our embassies CTE each month, and that includes the fascist ones. By simply not opening new fascist embassies, the number of those embassies was dropping. We never went back to close existing embassies. There never really seemed any point. They didn't post on our RMB, and we didn't post on theirs. You had to look pretty hard at our list of embassies to notice that they existed at all. So was there any real validity in the argument that we gave legitimacy to fascist regions?

On reflection, yes. No-one makes this argument on the thread, but while you could look at The Embassy and not see any obvious signs of fascists, the opposite was not true. If you looked at a fascist region, you could see they had an embassy with us. And so from that point of view, we were "normalising" fascism.

The Liberation proposal was a bully tactic, using the threat of aggression unless we took a particular course of action. Which was heavily ironic. In 1944, George Orwell wrote:
"Except for the relatively small number of Fascist sympathisers, almost any English person would accept ‘bully’ as a synonym for ‘Fascist’."

We don't give in to bullies, so we had to choose to keep those embassies open. We reasoned that it was unlikely that the Liberation would pass anyway. And even if it did, we agreed that we could easily refound our region. We request hundreds of embassies each week. Sending fresh embassy requests to our existing embassies wouldn't have been too demanding. We also later (incorrectly!) thought that the Liberation wouldn't actually remove the password - the wording on Liberations state that they are "A resolution to strike down Delegate-imposed barriers to free entry in a region". As our password was added by a regional officer and not the delegate, it looked like this proposal was toothless*.

So we planned to wait it out, watch the Liberation fail, and then deal with the fascist issue. But then Vippertooth33 got in touch. Vippertooth heads up The MT Army, which is an embassy collector region of sorts. The MT Army have over a thousand embassies - regions captured from fascists.

Vippertooth had posted on the thread that The Embassy had "a moral duty to remove their fascist tag and end embassies with any Nazi/Fascist regions on NationStates, however I do not support liberating the region (effectively destroying it) to achieve this goal."

Vippertooth had an alternate approach. Recognising our motivations as an embassy collector, they proposed:
"If embassies is what you seek, check the embassies attached to The MT Army I am the founder of most of these…
I can easily replace any lost number of embassies you may get from removing Fascist embassies from your region"

It was a no-brainer. We removed the fascist tag, and closed our fascist embassies.

* It's important to note that the wording on Liberations is misleading. They actually remove any regional password in a founderless region, no matter who set it. And they don't remove passwords on a region with an active founder, no matter who set it. I raised a thread on the Technical forum to get the wording fixed. If feel you have anything to add to the discussion, please do!

_ THE EMBASSY'S EMBASSIES

Our embassy count plummeted by a few hundred this month. Usually the vast majority of closures are down to embassy regions CTEing. This month was an exception though. Although we chose to close embassies with over eighty regions that were tagged fascist, it looked like a larger number of our embassies were closed by tag raiders Lily. I'm pretty sure that this was the first time since 2018 that we had more embassies being actively closed by tag raiders than we were managing to open. You can read about how busy Lily have been this month here. Although our WFE links to advice about how not to get raided, it looks like we should make that advice more prominent.

As at 1 July, we have 4,374 embassies, representing 18.63 percent of Nationstates' 23,483 regions.

This next dispatch is a race by Awerbar:

Race to the South Pole
Sponsored by: Awerbar

Your Nation has decided to join in the annual dog sled race to the South Pole. The route follows the historical trail paved by the first men to reach the bottom of the earth. Starting from where the first Antarctic Expeditions ship got trapped in ice on the Ronne Ice Shelf the course follows a 700 mile trail that ends at the International Antarctic Research Station near the pole.

How the Competition will work:

The Race will be played for 30 rounds (30 days) or until all racers have finished the race or dropped out
Average speed will be 50 miles a day
Distance per day can change based on 4 factors, Dogs, Sled, Supplies, and Environment

The factors change daily by the roll of 4 20 sided die

Certain Rolls on the die could end in being unable to continue the race. (Ex: rolling a 0 on sled and a 0 on supplies could mean that you break a runner on your sled and don’t have enough spare parts to fix it.)
Each person also receives 20 free points worth of *experience and training* that they can distribute among the 4 categories. (Ex: 0/20 +10 for dogs, 0/20 +7 for sled, 0/20 +3 for supplies, 0/20 +0 for Environment)

The higher the roll the better the run. However, some high roll situations may not be the best. (Ex: 18 +5 for dogs, 20+10 for supplies, 15+5 for Environment, 17+0 for Sled. Your Dogs are rested and ready to go, you have plenty of supplies, actually you have overstocked on supplies and your sled is heavier than usual. Instead of the runners skimming the top of the thin fresh and sticky layer of snow, the runners cut into it and the snow sticks to the skid. This creates more drag than intended and it slows you down. Lose 5 miles.)

Registration for this event ends on June 30th, to register send a telegram to awerbar that includes your starting points distribution.

Daily Race Updates will be posted on the Nordic Territories RMB daily (or whenever possible). Final Leaderboard will be posted on July 31st

The Rewards for this event will be 5 extra points to go towards then next event for first place, 3 points for second place, 1 point for third place

by Local now news

Hi I am here to give you some news.
News:The US and Brazilian presidents, Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro, are pushing for a joint research effort on using a drug to treat Covid-19 that has been linked to increased deaths in virus patients.

Trump has repeatedly touted use of the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine, even admitting to taking it himself as a preventative measure. US health bosses have cautioned against its use outside of a hospital setting because of a risk of heart problems.

The White House said Trump and Bolsonaro “expressed their mutual appreciation for the longstanding collaboration on health issues between the two countries”, discussing the US delivery of 2m doses of the controversial drug to Brazil and a “joint research effort to help further evaluate the safety and efficacy of hydroxychloroquine for both prophylaxis and the early treatment of the coronavirus”.

Just south of Alaska in British Columbia, Canada, amid the rugged countryside of Wells Gray Provincial Park, the entrance to a cave was discovered in 2018 that was so vast it could comfortably fit the entire Statue of Liberty in the antechamber.

Reporting on the discovery at the time, GNN covered an interview with John Pollack, an archeological surveyor and governor of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. He explained to Canadian Geographic the enormity of his expedition’s find.

“The opening is 100 meters long by 60 meters wide, and when you’re standing on the edge looking down into it, your line of sight is nearly 600 feet [183 meters],” added Pollack. “You don’t get lines of sight of 600 feet in Canadian caves — it just doesn’t happen. And this is a shaft. It goes down quite precipitously, it had a large amount of water flowing into it and is wide open for as far down (as) we’ve gone.”

“The scale of this thing is just huge.” he added.

Despite its entrance ranging 330 feet wide and 200 feet deep, it went undetected for so long, geologists believe, because a plug of ice had formed underneath a significant pile of snow. The steadily warming climate since the 1940’s, as confirmed by geological survey and satellite imagery, eventually caused the ice to collapse, revealing the scope of the massive feature.

The Sarlacc Pit – Two Years on
Since its discovery in 2018, scientists have had very little opportunities to study the cave—which they nicknamed the Sarlacc Pit after the iconic monster in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi—due to the small window of time it can be safely explored. The snows must be gone and the water level of the river running down into it has to be sufficiently low—phenomena that only occur during September and some of October.

The shaft at the opening consists of layers of recumbent folds of marble and garnet mica schist, with minor quartzite. In places, the marble has distributed quartz grains that stand out in relief against the calcite and sandy limestone. The scientists used a helicopter, camera, and later, software, to produce a spatially correct 3D model of the visible portions of the entrance.

Catherine Hickson
“The Disappearing River,” near the Hare Indian River Plateau in NWT, is one of the finest examples of a sinking river in Canada, but this Wells Gray cave’s flow is significantly larger, with a uniquely dramatic, vertical shaft of huge proportions.

For now, to ensure the cave can be examined in a pristine condition, authorities have placed fines in excess of $1,000,000 for trespassing to deter rock climbers, plunderers, and Instagram travel influencers.

“We think it may connect to a much more ancient cave system,” Catherine Hickson, one of the scientists who discovered the cave, told CBC.

Catherine Hickson
Unfortunately according to Hickson, the warming of the climate is almost certainly responsible for the cave’s unveiling, an umbral stain on the otherwise sunny news of the discovery.

“This collapse is likely related to climate change as evidenced by the gradual recession of glaciers in the immediate area,” read the paper, published in February, 2020, in the Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences.

But Hickson and other geologists admit the melt has “opened up a tantalizing opportunity” to explore what might be the largest cave entrance of its kind in Canada.

The paper concluded that the cave has an unknown depth and lateral extent, but based on the suspected resurgence feature it is expected to be at least 500 yards deep (460m) and 1.34 miles in long (2.16 km).

Official naming of the cave has been postponed, even now 2 years after its discovery, until First Nations cultures can be consulted.

“What we don’t know is the state of those open passages, how far they go,” she said. “We know that in other caves around the world, there’s life that has been adapted to that extreme environment,” says Hickson.

Tropical Storm Cristobal Set to Make Landfall
Meteorologist Domenica Davis tells us where the storm is headed next.
At a Glance
Tropical Storm Cristobal formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday.
A tropical storm warning has been posted along the Mexican coast.
Cristobal is likely to linger over land in eastern Mexico through Friday.
Beyond that, it is expected to move toward the U.S. Gulf Coast late Sunday or early Monday.
Some impacts, including heavy rain and high surf, should reach the U.S. Gulf Coast beginning Saturday.
Areas near the U.S. Gulf Coast from Texas to Florida should monitor the progress of Cristobal.
Cristobal was spawned by a large system called a Central American Gyre and the remnants of a former Eastern Pacific tropical storm.
This gyre and Cristobal will produce torrential rain and life-threatening flooding and mudslides in Mexico and Central America.
Tropical Storm Cristobal made landfall in Mexico Wednesday morning, will continue to pound Mexico and Central America with life-threatening, flooding rain, and then track toward the U.S. Gulf Coast later this weekend bringing a threat of flooding rain, high surf, coastal flooding and winds.

The center of Cristobal moved ashore just west of Ciudad del Carmen, Mexico, in the far western side of Campeche state just after 8:30 a.m. CDT Wednesday, with winds of 60 mph.

Cristobal continues to drift south-southeast at less than 5 mph.

A tropical storm warning continues along the Mexican coast from Campeche westward to Coatzacoalcos. The National Hurricane Center said tropical-storm-force winds (39-plus mph) are affecting portions of the warning area.

Current Storm Status and Projected Path
(The red-shaded area denotes the potential path of the center of the tropical cyclone. It's important to note that impacts (particularly heavy rain, high surf, coastal flooding and strong winds) with any tropical cyclone usually spread beyond its forecast path.)
Cristobal became the record-earliest-in-season third named Atlantic storm - previously held by Tropical Storm Colin on June 5, 2016 - Tuesday in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. Last year, the "C" storm, Chantal, didn't develop until Aug. 20.

U.S. Gulf Coast Forecast
Cristobal will linger inland or near the Bay of Campeche coast of eastern Mexico through Friday, lacking any significant steering winds aloft. It may weaken to a tropical depression before it emerges back into the Bay of Campeche or Gulf of Mexico later Friday.

This weekend, however, it's expected to be drawn northward into the Gulf of Mexico through a break in subtropical high pressure.

That could bring Cristobal near the northern U.S. Gulf Coast by later Sunday anywhere from the upper Texas coast to the Alabama Gulf Coast. It remains too soon to determine exactly where this system would come ashore.

image
Cristobal Steering
Early-June storms like Cristobal tend to be lopsided, with significant impacts far from the track of the center.

In this case, with a northward-moving Cristobal in the Gulf of Mexico, we expect a plume of deep, tropical moisture to wring out heavy rain well east of the center, as far east as the Florida Peninsula.

Also, increasing winds over the Gulf of Mexico will drive high surf to the beaches of the Gulf Coast, particularly to the east of the track from Louisiana to southwest Florida, generating dangerous rip currents and coastal flooding.

These far-reaching impacts are expected to increase beginning Saturday, and may persist into early Monday.

So, Cristobal is yet another case where the forecast path will not tell the whole story of impacts.

(MORE: Why the Projected Path Doesn't Always Tell the Full Story)

image
Rainfall Outlook and Forecast Path
(This should be interpreted as a broad outlook of where the heaviest rain may fall and may shift based on the forecast path of the tropical cyclone. Higher amounts may occur where bands of rain stall over a period of a few hours. The current forecast path of the center of Cristobal from the National Hurricane Center is shown by the red path.)
Cristobal's intensity forecast is a bit complicated.

First up, as mentioned earlier, Cristobal will interact with land in Mexico the next few days. Just how far inland it will track in Mexico is a bit uncertain. The farther away it moves from the warm Bay of Campeche water, the weaker it may become.

Wind shear, the change in wind speed and/or direction with height that typically hinders intensification of tropical cyclones, is expected to be present in the Gulf of Mexico as Cristobal heads northward.

image
Current Satellite and Wind Shear
(Areas of clouds are shown in white. Areas of strong wind shear, the difference in wind speed and direction with height, are shown in purple. High wind shear is hostile to mature tropical cyclones and those trying to develop.)
Gulf of Mexico water temperatures are currently warmer than average for early June and warm enough to support tropical development but not as warm as midsummer, and deep heat content is lacking in the western Gulf.

These factors should keep a lid on significant intensification of this system as it nears the U.S. Gulf Coast late in the weekend. For now, the most likely scenario is a tropical storm landfall.

Water Temperature Departures From Average
(Areas where water temperatures are warmer/cooler than average are shown by progressively darker yellow/blue contours.)
Interests along the Gulf coasts of the U.S. and Mexico should monitor Cristobal's progress closely. Check back to weather.com for updates over the next several days. If anything, this is a reminder to refresh or develop your hurricane plan now.

Major Flood Threat in Mexico, Central America
The most serious threat right now is for more inundating rain over areas that have already been clobbered with torrential rain and deadly flooding in southern Mexico and Central America.

The National Hurricane Center said parts of the Pacific coasts of El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico's Chiapas state picked up 20 inches of rain last weekend. Another 10 to 20 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, is expected the next several days in those areas, as well as other Mexican states.

(MORE: Central America, Mexico Tropical Cyclones Have a Deadly History)

image
Rainfall Forecast
Life-threatening flooding and mudslides are likely in these areas, particularly in hilly or mountainous terrain.

In addition to Cristobal, this rainfall is also being fueled by what's called a Central American Gyre, or CAG. This "gyre" is a large, broad area of low pressure that often forms in late spring and early fall over Central America and the western Caribbean Sea.

Flooding from former Eastern Pacific Tropical Storm Amanda and its remnants caused damage and killed several people in El Salvador last weekend.

Amanda's leftover energy and spin played a role in triggering the development of Tropical Depression Three in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico Monday afternoon, which then strengthened into Tropical Storm Cristobal on Tuesday.

news about mars

The extraordinary sample-gathering system of NASA's Perseverance Mars rover

The samples Apollo 11 brought back to Earth from the Moon were humanity's first from another celestial body. NASA's upcoming Mars 2020 Perseverance rover mission will collect the first samples from another planet (the red one) for return to Earth by subsequent missions. In place of astronauts, the Perseverance rover will rely on the most complex, capable and cleanest mechanism ever to be sent into space, the Sample Caching System.

The final 39 of the 43 sample tubes at the heart of the sample system were loaded, along with the storage assembly that will hold them, aboard NASA's Perseverance rover on May 20 at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. (The other four tubes had already been loaded into different locations in the Sample Caching System.) The integration of the final tubes marks another key step in preparation for the opening of the rover's launch period on July 17.

"While you cannot help but marvel at what was achieved back in the days of Apollo, they did have one thing going for them we don't: boots on the ground," said Adam Steltzner, chief engineer for the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover mission at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. "For us to collect the first samples of Mars for return to Earth, in place of two astronauts we have three robots that have to work with the precision of a Swiss watch."

While many people think of the Perseverance rover as one robot, it's actually akin to a collection of robots working together. Located on the front of the Perseverance rover, the Sample Caching System itself is composed of three robots, the most visible being the rover's 7-foot-long (2-meter-long) robotic arm. Bolted to the front of the rover's chassis, the five-jointed arm carries a large turret that includes a rotary percussive drill to collect core samples of Mars rock and regolith (broken rock and dust).

The second robot looks like a small flying saucer built into the front of the rover. Called the bit carousel, this appliance is the ultimate middleman for all Mars sample transactions: It will provide drill bits and empty sample tubes to the drill and will later move the sample-filled tubes into the rover chassis for assessment and processing.

The third robot in the Sample Caching System is the 1.6-foot-long (0.5 meter-long) sample handling arm (known by the team as the "T. rex arm"). Located in the belly of the rover, it picks up where the bit carousel leaves off, moving sample tubes between storage and documentation stations as well as the bit carousel.

Clocklike Precision

All of these robots need to run with clocklike precision. But where the typical Swiss chronometer has fewer than 400 parts, the Sample Caching System has more than 3,000.

"It sounds like a lot, but you begin to realize the need for complexity when you consider the Sample Caching System is tasked with autonomously drilling into Mars rock, pulling out intact core samples and then sealing them hermetically in hyper-sterile vessels that are essentially free of any Earth-originating organic material that could get in the way of future analysis," said Steltzner. "In terms of technology, it is the most complicated, most sophisticated mechanism that we have ever built, tested and readied for spaceflight."

The mission's goal is to collect a dozen or more samples. So how does this three-robot, steamer-trunk-sized labyrinthine collection of motors, planetary gearboxes, encoders and other devices all meticulously work together to take them?

"Essentially, after our rotary percussive drill takes a core sample, it will turn around and dock with one of the four docking cones of the bit carousel," said Steltzner. "Then the bit carousel rotates that Mars-filled drill bit and a sample tube down inside the rover to a location where our sample handling arm can grab it. That arm pulls the filled sample tube out of the drill bit and takes it to be imaged by a camera inside the Sample Caching System."

After the sample tube is imaged, the small robotic arm moves it to the volume assessment station, where a ramrod pushes down into the sample to gauge its size. "Then we go back and take another image," said Steltzner. "After that, we pick up a seal—a little plug—for the top of the sample tube and go back to take yet another image."

Engineers and technicians working on the Mars 2020 Perseverance team insert 39 sample tubes into the belly of the rover. Each tube is sheathed in a gold-colored cylindrical enclosure to protect it from contamination. Perseverance rover will carry 43 sample tubes to Mars' Jezero Crater. Next, the Sample Caching System places the tube in the sealing station, where a mechanism hermetically seals the tube with the cap. "Then we take the tube out," added Steltzner, "and we return it to storage from where it first began."

Getting the system designed and manufactured, then integrated into Perseverance has been a seven-year endeavor. And the work isn't done. As with everything else on the rover, there are two versions of the Sample Caching System: an engineering test model that will stay here on Earth and the flight model that will travel to Mars.

"The engineering model is identical in every way possible to the flight model, and it's our job to try to break it," said Kelly Palm, the Sample Caching System integration engineer and Mars 2020 test lead at JPL. "We do that because we would rather see things wear out or break on Earth than on Mars. So we put the engineering test model through its paces to inform our use of its flight twin on Mars."

To that end, the team uses different rocks to simulate types of terrain. They drill them from various angles to anticipate any imaginable situation the rover could be in where the science team might want to gather a sample.

"Every once in a while, I have to take a minute and contemplate what we are doing," said Palm. "Just a few years ago I was in college. Now I am working on the system that will be responsible for collecting the first samples from another planet for return to Earth. That is pretty awesome."

Perseverance is a robotic scientist weighing about 2,260 pounds (1,025 kilograms). The rover's astrobiology mission will search for signs of past microbial life. It will characterize the planet's climate and geology, collect samples for future return to Earth, and pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet. No matter what day Perseverance lifts off during its July 17-Aug. 11 launch period, it will land at Mars' Jezero Crater on Feb. 18, 2021.
